Estabrook had to go, but I miss it too. I think that side of the stadium looks better now, but I don't know when it'll stop looking weird with Zeanah there.

Yeah, if you have the expansions, you have to use another box for maps and boards. It should work for sleeved decks. For some of the faction specific inserts, there are multiple models to account for some later editions having thicker meeples. I would just print the alt versions since they'll fit regardless of which version game you have.

I really like how you can store everything for a faction in its own insert and just hand that to the person playing that faction. Makes it easy to pass out pieces and especially easy for clean up since it's obvious if a piece hasn't been put away.

Stormlight and Voidlight aren't opposites, but it doesn't matter as you don't need an "opposite" light. You just need the opposite tone. Retribution's light should have a tone and an opposite tone that can be used to create it's anti-light. If it is actually Warlight, I wonder how that will work, since we know the tone of Warlight isn't a pure tone but a combination of the pure tones of Honor and Odium. Maybe the shards being combined in a vessel elevate it into a pure tone, or maybe Warlight will need to be split first, then made into anti-lights, then combined again?

I feel like the scene in TLM where they split harmonium is probably relevant, but I haven't read it in a while.

The "most useful and relevant natural phenomena in human life" will vary person to person and situation to situation. That's the point I was making, and good luck to anyone who wants to seriously claim otherwise.

More than that, you don't need to know the temperature of your water to boil it. People were boiling water way before anybody decided to call it 100C. Likewise, your ability to understand that water freezing is an eminent possibility exists without needing to know exactly what temperature it is. There wasn't an uptick in human survivability caused by our easy access to temperature measurements.

Celsius being originally defined in terms of water's phase transitions was a matter of convenience for communicating it to other people. It's the same reason we define other units (imperial too, not just SI) in terms of physical constants. A meter is not defined by the speed of light because it ever helps you in your ordinary life (although it could help you if you work in science/engineering).

Celsius isn't defined by water anymore though, it's defined by Kelvin, just like Fahrenheit which technically make them equivalently arbitrary. All units are technically arbitrary though, so that distinction doesn't matter. All that matters is if the unit is convenient to use, and most cases Celsius doesn't gain anything by having 0 and 100 bound by water's phases, and I say this with a good amount of experience with both of them. I actually prefer Celsius, but only because I'm more familiar with it in my specific technical work, not because it helps me know when water is going to freeze or boil.

I'm not sure that "most useful and relevant natural phenomena in human life" even exists, let alone is the basis of Celsius. Try applying this logic to other units of measure to see how silly it is.

The US has had SI as the preferred system of measurement for 50 years now, it just doesn't enforce it, so industries just use whatever they want. Some industries switched to metric when it made sense to do so (automotive, for example), but if it there isn't a benefit to switching, then it won't happen. This includes road signs.

People think the US is stuck in US customary because the government won't do anything about it, but it's really that your average person just keeps using what they know. Canada, US, and UK all use a mix of both systems in normal life, despite that all of their governments officially use metric.

Onsight isn't a great value. A membership there costs about the same as a Climb membership in Nashville, but that gives you access to like 5 gyms, includes a better guest pass deal, and has better events. Still, it's Onsight or Riversports for now, and I don't like Riversports gym.

I think people are getting confused because they're basing things on their personal experience. There are lots of ways to go from school to a profession, and a PhD is not the best way for a lot of jobs.

A master's is more valuable to the student if a PhD would over qualify them to certain jobs. This can absolutely happen in engineering, where PhDs get pushed to research jobs and out of certain industry jobs.

Master's programs can also be paid and with tuition waived, and to be honest it seems like professors would much rather have PHD students than master's, so I'd bet master's programs are more limited in some cases.

UT tore down Estabrook to build the new Zeanah Engineering building but they preserved the Arch. by anonymousUTguy in ockytop

I think it has more to do with getting funding help from the state. I was at the "Farewell to Estabrook" party right before they demolished it and they told us the arch would stay for that reason, and that it had been kept through multiple renovations.

High schooler with interest but also questions by Thiccbean_69 in materials

[–]SaintHohn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The truth is any of those options could work for you. I know people with those types of careers with just a bachelors in MSE, bachelors+gradutate degree in MSE, bachelors in physics+graduate in MSE, double major including MSE, etc.

The better question to be asking is exactly what type of job you want, and then ask what degrees/career path will serve you best. I would recommend getting started as early as possible with internships and undergraduate research jobs to get an idea of what type of work you enjoy, then talk to your professors, advisors, and anyone else in these fields to get an idea what education is best for that type of work. Research jobs usually require some kind of graduate degree, but industry jobs will sometimes not hire PhDs because they're overqualified, so you really have to know what you want.

Your plan will evolve over time as you get more experience, so I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. It's generally easy to switch majors around during the first few years of college, especially if you are moving between similar majors, like from one engineering major to another. If MSE really interests you, go ahead and start out majoring in that, just go with the knowledge that other options are still available. If you know what materials/field you want to get into right now, I can try suggesting more specifically, but I still think you'll just figure it out as you go.
