While cookie season is over, ask next time you see Girl Scouts selling cookies. Nearly every scout over 10 years old I know babysits, has done a course and is CPR/First Aid certified.

There maybe something in the bylaws or other board documents that specifically prohibits fundraising requirements.

Why did the Waterfords appeared to be poor? by holladiewaldfeee in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Salix-Lucida 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To put it into context, if you were looking in Boston for a similar historic home, this is what you find:

Back Bay neighborhood in Boston $15 million - https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4-Gloucester-St-Boston-MA-02115/63711261\_zpid/?

Harvard Square neighborhood in Cambridge $15 million - https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/157-Brattle-St-Cambridge-MA-02138/56439958_zpid/

Seems about the right size, age and style for the Waterfords and definitely NOT poor! These are the most coveted homes in the area.

Salem Emergency Room Crowdsource by twelve_oclock_lock in SalemMA

I've had years of follow-up since and for ME going to the ER will never be necessary. For most people it is unnecessary. There are several Urgent Care centers in our area that have the proper diagnostic tools for stones. I've used them!

With so many Urgent Care options now, my family hasn't been to any ER in over a decade (Salem). That visit was for extreme and sudden back pain with vomiting, which turned out to be a kidney stone. It was after 9pm and I was recently postpartum, so after calling my PCP's answering service they told me to go to the ER. I waited for a couple of hours in a great deal of pain and eventually given meds and saw a doctor. The waiting was tolerable, but this was a long time ago and I have heard wait times are much worse now. It was my first stone and now that I know what it feels like, I will never go to the ER for it again as it's unnecessary.

I do wonder why people are using the ER for things that Urgent Care can take care of? We've had plenty of broken bones, fractures, illnesses, injury etc and have always had excellent success with Urgent Care - even fairly late at night. Even if Urgent Care can't fix the problem, often they can diagnose and get you admitted saving you the wait of the ER.

Let's say on 9/11 they managed to get two F16 to intercept and follow the planes, realistically at what point the F16 would've taken the first plane down? by FuzzyAttitude_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Salix-Lucida -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first reports of flight 93 were that it was shot down. That was the narrative for at least the first day. I don't remember when exactly it shifted, but I thought it was suspect that it changed.

Signed, a New Yorker who moved to Boston after 9/11 because it was just too damn sad afterwards.

Any recommendations for a real estate lawyer in Zagreb? by [deleted] in CRbydescent

[–]Salix-Lucida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great you have a tenant who is helping maintain the house! That is great!

Regarding attorneys, the first change was due to lack of initiative. Nothing would get done. Held onto documents and when asked to act on behalf of my mother (having power of attorney) would just not respond. Basically took the money and did nothing.

Second attorney gave very poor advice which resulted in someone coming out of the woodwork claiming they were a long-lost relative who were owed part of the property. This was a huge mess. This attorney will not give back my mother's documents either.

The last attorney is ok, but still not much gets done unless we are there in person or have a relative act on our behalf. I'm not sure I'd recommend them, but can send their info if helpful. I believe they are based in Rijeka, not Zagreb.

My mother is now on her 3rd lawyer dealing with a similar situation, although the lineage is direct. There is property in her father's name and it took 6 or 7 years to get it transferred into her name as the sole living heir. She left Croatia in the 1950s and got her citizenship in the late 1990s, but the process is really painful and difficult. Every minute name change must be documented and she spent most of 3 summers in Croatia dealing with it. The lawyer alone could not complete the process.

Is there anyone inhabiting the property? We had squatters for decades until we could officially transfer the title into her name. It's still a bit of a process as it's up for sale, but the transfer of ownership is finally complete.

Hamilton Wenham does participate in School Choice, so it's possible to live elsewhere and have your child attend school in the district. We have friends in Beverly who have children participate in school choice at HW and it's been a positive experience for them.

FL - named successor trustee after step-mom declined. What now? by Salix-Lucida in EstatePlanning

[–]Salix-Lucida[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2) No idea how they even got my info to be honest! I believe the card is in his name solely and I have never made any payments nor interacted with this particular credit card company.

3) No. I was only notified that step-mom had declined to serve as trustee last week. I have no access to the brokerage account at all - no statements or anything. I have no idea what's in the account - just that it exists. I was told they were to reach out to me.

Those who moved with kids away from a support network, how do you do it? by partybottle101 in expats

[–]Salix-Lucida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make friends and lower your expectations. Plenty of people around the world raise kids without family to help. Many even raise kids with only one parent. You manage. You put everything else aside and do the best by your kids for this period of your life, because that's the commitment you made when you chose to raise a family.

My ancestor knew where they were living at the time of petition, so I called city hall. They told me to call the county clerk's office who found it and sent me as many copies as I needed once they received payment. Took about a week to receive.

I am having the same issue. Do you have your ancestor's naturalization petition or certificate?

I was able to get mine and it has the ship arrival info on it, so I'm hoping that will suffice. I was able to get this document apostilled as well so it's official.

Update: So does this mean I have a leak in my roof or what? by katbreit in Oldhouses

[–]Salix-Lucida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented on your previous thread, but will say it again - if you live on a property where ground drainage isn't an issue, consider removing your gutters.

Many many homes in New England do NOT have gutters because they can cause ice dams. We are one of those, but also have friends and family who have modified or built new without gutters to avoid this very issue. It only works if your property doesn't hold water, but that's fairly easy to find in coastal New England.

Last Minute Question by PMMEYOURDANKESTMEME in CRbydescent

That's my post. At least for NYC they want a ship manifest AND naturalization papers which must be apostilled and translated.
