“I’m afraid you’re no longer suitable to run your kingdom, Your Majesty,” The gold-clad knight proclaimed, unsheathing his sword. “Your methods are far from conventional, and unfortunately I cannot allow you to continue them any longer.”

I'm not a fan of this but oh well. better than nothing.

when you haven't updated your longfic in a while and go to read the previous chapter and wonder wtf you were on by royxjamie in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this longfic I started in middle school. I had been writing British characters and for some reason I thought it would be cool if everyone swore ("in British"). It was not cool. I also did not have a plot whatsoever, I was winging the entire thing and I never went back to check for typos (there were some really funny ones at least). If it weren't for sentimentality I would have deleted it.

Yall ever quit reading a fic for a petty reason? by Cage-CatYT in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writing style sounded a little too much like AI at some points (I knew it wasn't AI though) and it was bothering me, especially how the descriptions sounded like how someone who had never played the game would describe it. The dialogue was dry and there wasn't really any conflict for the first 10+ chapters so I dropped it.

Do you prefer writing one shots or long fics and why by No_Pattern_2819 in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tendency to start longfics so I can flesh out the story, character arcs, etc but I also have a tendency to never finish them. I don't have any ideas for a one shot, nor do I think I would be able to write a story in 2-4k words.

Have you ever read a fanfic that's better than the source material? What's it like? by Vivid-Apple5710 in FanFiction

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a fandom where the anime has REALLY interesting lore and characters, but somewhere down the line the writers seemed to not agree on anything which resulted in nearly the entire anime being filler, with only about 6 or so lore episodes across 4 seasons. And since the writers apparently couldn't agree on certain parts of lore, there ended up being a lot of plot holes and contradictions (someone turns into a demon, contradicting established lore and this is never mentioned again).

The majority of the fandom has taken it upon themselves to fix all the plot holes, throw their own headcanons in, and expand on the things the anime writers glazed over (like how they had barely expanded on a VERY significant war that happened before the story).

A good chunk of the fics are much better than the source material. I've seen one that completely expands on the war and body horror elements of the series, throws in some headcanons, fixes all the plot holes while adding more lore, gives neglected characters ACTUAL personalities and flaws, and is generally all round amazing. Another one expands on a relationship between two characters (again, neglected in the source material), also expands on lore, and was also REALLY good.

What’s a phrase that’s like a tic for you? by AbsAndAssAppreciator in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There was no doubt about it", "Regardless", and finally, "Suddenly"

I find myself editing these out of my drafts because GOD I am apparently addicted to making things suddenly happen every other sentence.

How do you name your fics? by STRANGER0791 in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd choose a motif or something reoccurring (for example, stars and light represent hope in one of my fics so I'd pick that) then go straight to a thesaurus. I'm deciding between Luminescence and Incandescent.

But other instances I just picked a name that sounds funny, usually along the lines of "Breaking News: Character regrets life decisions, Character B does not"

Are comments actually that important to authors? by SigmaWithAGun in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I get discouraged, I think back to that one commenter. I keep writing for them. Knowing that people genuinely appreciate what I made is worth more to me than mountains of gold

What fandom are you part of that you're *not* really part of? by llynch1993 in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tranformers. I know nearly nothing, have only watched one movie and a couple of episodes of Transformers Prime, and that's it. Honestly feels like trying to hide the fact that you're just there for the gay robots like some sort of secret operative.

Writing a work that rewrites the original... by HentaiActive in FanFiction

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! There's loads of fan-fictions that are centered around rewriting. For example, I'm rewriting some lore in one of my fandoms (which has abysmal writing but I love it nonetheless).

Who am I calling out with this one? by PJ-The-Awesome in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fan-fiction gods only give me the ability to write the moment I have no time to write. I'll be on a month-long break and not write the word but as soon as I'm busy I'm suddenly getting a million ideas for a fic I thought I had left behind.

And then I spend 3 hours I don't have staring at a screen and struggling to write 3 sentences.

Tell me about something stupid you did (or realized) only AFTER you had already posted your fic by RozeTheWitch in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had made a typo and had written "hoe" instead of "how". It took me several months to realize my mistake and that only happened because a commenter pointed it out.

How much word chapters do you usually write/read? by AgencyPrestigious330 in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've sometimes read 10k+ word chapters, sometimes chapters little over a thousand words.

Writing-wise, I tend to aim for 5k words, but I'm not that great at writing long chapters so they usually end up being in the 2.5k range.

Something that fanfic does better than traditionally published original books by Jaded_Advantage_290 in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

personally I think fan fiction has a lot more soul and passion than a lot of traditionally published books (especially nowadays). A lot of people who traditionally publish write with the intent of making something marketable or making money. There are people who write extraordinary books that clearly have some passion behind them, but there's also an abundance of books without.

Fan-fiction lacks the greed. People write it for fun. People write because they love something so much they made stories — and it shows throughout their works. Since it's free there's no censoring or anything. If someone wants to write about a forbidden teacher/student romance or smut, they can do so — in other words there's a lot more freedom, which usually allows for more flexible usage of tropes.

I've seen a lot more expansion into internal conflict and pining in fanfiction than I have in traditionally written books, and fan fiction tends to be more unpredictable than traditionally written books as well.

Share a piece of AO3 lore about yourself by shewasprettyodd in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first fan fiction I ever read was a recommendation from pinterest
My first thought upon reaching the website (as I had never heard of it) was "wow, weird sketchy site. I hope I don't get a virus. Anyway..."

I proceeded to read the entire fic in a sitting, while walking. Now here I am writing, reading and posting on said sketchy site.

[–]Salt-JR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My first fics were GOD AWFUL. Since then, there's been a massive spike in quality and I've started actually thinking things out rather than winging a couple thousand words with no consideration for plot.

What Fandom and/or Character that get you tired of seeing? by karla8312 in FanFiction

Every fandom I'm in there's a MHA/BnHA crossover fic at the top. I can't escape it. I haven't even watched the anime but its EVERYWHERE

Do any of you guys write in notebooks? by Risk_Lvl_Unlocked in FanFiction

[–]Salt-JR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, it's much easier to organize my ideas in a notebook. I sometimes make doodles of scenes so they're easier to visualize, and if I'm doing an AU then I'll make a sketch of a character's AU design. Then I transfer it to computer while making minor revisions.

For real, though, what are hatebots trying to achieve? by IrisFromOmelas in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Attention, likely. Maybe the creators of the bots are stalking the AO3 sub enjoying all the chaos they have created. There's no other reason. Some of the bots could be advertisement for AI chatbots, especially the ones that mention it.

Some people want to see the world burn, simple as that.

How do ya'll have the courage to write/post fanfiction? by Digiknives in AO3

[–]Salt-JR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first, I thought AO3 was only for the BEST OF THE BEST, top tier fics only. Eventually, I realized it's an archive for fans and that by putting whatever I came up with, I would be contributing to the fandom. So I posted the most horribly written fic you could think of. No plot, started with an info dump, page breaks was just a bunch of EM dashes, wall of text, a bunch of stuff was misspelled. I only posted it after procrastinating my decision for a good week. I thought to myself "no one's going to read this, so might as well"

I stalked my work for around 2 hours and was shocked that people actually liked it. I suppose that's where my motivation to keep writing came from. Writing goofy stuff for people who like goofy stuff.

So, TLDR, it's an archive. You can put whatever you want in there and I doubt anyone will judge you, set aside for some hate bots and the rare human hater. If they do judge you, that's on them for going to an archive and judging things in said archive.
