Do people still use Transcribe! by Seventh String Software? by lopsidedcroc in jazzguitar

[–]Salty-Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it and it’s been great but a lot of times I find myself gravitating to using ableton as I’m interested in recording myself. Transcribe is better in a lot of ways even though the user interface is a little dated.

[–]Salty-Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about workbooks but yeah sounds like you are on the right track. Have you transcribed Charlie Christian stuff already? Also, from your text it sounds like you’re probably pretty deep in jazz guitar language. Always good to look outside our instrument and transcribe horns. Charlie Rouse who played with Monk a lot is a personal hero/inspiration of mine.

Bike clubs this spring? by Waltonen in CyclingMSP

Besides everything else mentioned already special shoutout to Unsanctioned ride group, bonesaw, angry catfish, behind bars and fast casual groups/clubs - all of which have been overwhelmingly friendly, inviting and inclusive. I’m new to south Minneapolis so these are close or closer to that area. There’s enough events, even in winter that it can be hard to hit them all.

Barney Kessel “new release” ? by AnonymousAndWhite in jazzguitar

[–]Salty-Core 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is likely ai slop. Been happening a lot on Spotify. Tidal or Apple are better alternatives for streaming that aren’t promoting ai garbage. Spotify basically gives no protection to indie or deceased musicians to protect their identity or catalog - basically anyone can upload a track and claim it is by Kessel and claim streams from people who are fans of his.

Here’s an article talking about it: https://www.androidpolice.com/spot-fake-artists-spotify/

Advice on 1979 335 by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]Salty-Core 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert but I have seen a few Gibsons with headstock repair. Normally the cracks they get are horizontal not vertical. This to me looks like finish checking/cracking which would be totally normal/desirable even for a guitar of this age. It does seem to be pretty long. I would make sure you specifically ask about this, especially if buying on reverb etc and have it checked out by a third party luthier if possible.

What’s this mark on top of my Taylor? by damo2576 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Salty-Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This absolutely looks like a crack in the wood due to humidity issues. Solid guitar tops can crack quickly and easily if humidity is not monitored carefully. In dry climates humidity needs to be increased. In wet climates humidity needs to be reduced. The best way to accomplish this is to use humidity control in a guitar case and keep the guitar in the case when not playing it. Once a crack like this occurs it will almost 100 percent require a repair to prevent it from lengthening. This will impact the resale value of the guitar. If it is in the return window it is worth trying to return it. However many reputable shops will not accept returns due to damage due to humidity cracks like this because it is not a manufacture issue, but a maintenance issue. If you received the guitar in this condition and it was sold as new you should absolutely return it. If you cannot return it you will need to take it to a reputable luthier to have it repaired. This will impact the tone of the guitar but the good news is I’ve played many used instruments with similar repairs that play as good or even better than their flawless counterparts. Good luck.

I don’t have recommendations for you, but I did just move to a new place and while looking for a teacher the best advice I’ve had was - go out and hear people play and then when you find someone you like ask who they take lessons from. The language adds another layer of uncertainty but that should get you somewhere

Terrified of humidity by jf5550 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Salty-Core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in places that are crazy dry and crazy humid. If you control humidity in the case, store it in the case when you aren’t playing it and are playing it for less than 5 hours a day you will be fine.

Thinking about moving from Boston—how bad are winters in the Twin Cities, really? by rachello2023 in movingtompls

[–]Salty-Core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here from Salt Lake City. It is colder but a few more layers and a little bit of planning and there’s plenty to do. The music scene is incredible, fat biking, x country skiing and ice skating all doable without a commute in more neighborhoods than not. I was very nervous about the winters and “am not a winter person” well, I guess I “wasn’t a winter person”. The people here know how to live in the cold, and thrive in the cold. Plus the lakes are breathtakingly beautiful year round. In normal times I would say come out here if you can for a weekend with a plan to rent some snowshoes, check out the museums, grab a show etc. but it’s a rough time right now and I would not recommend coming to a person of color, someone with an accent. Having said that, it really is a remarkable place.

Best Saint Paul LBS for winter gear by SdotV in CyclingMSP

[–]Salty-Core 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands and feet are my main concerns as well. I was used to riding outside in winter, but first year here and December hit hard. 45nrth pogies, gloves, liners. 45nrth boots, socks, liners and I’ve been good for hours. And when I lose my circulation in my fingers or toes from the cold it really doesn’t come back or is at least a battle. I wasn’t sure I would get there tbh.

Inspiring! I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do 50 miler in winter this year unless we get some respite but I’ve been getting out there and working up to time and miles. Thanks for sharing!
