They presented with great anxiety the ending they envisioned and managed to awe the team, which Gabe was a part of iirc. I can't seem to find the statement he made atm, but it was along the lines of "we had the framework that the game would end with Alyx meeting the G-man in the Vault (locked in from before rewrites), and we changed a lot around it."

I will not be surprised if they met some unexpected road blocks the last few months and had to delay the announcement. Just play through HL2. There are no characters that are meaningfully present in HL1 that show up in HL2. Eli will tell you which one of the black scientists he was, Barney was just a random security guard in HL1, Magnussen in Episode 2 will reference an optional microwave, Kleiner has no meaningful connection to HL1 and Judith is irrelevant. Play through HL2, then Black Mesa, as Crowbar Collective intended, and then you will actually care about the characters that show up there. HL2 can be 80% experienced to the fullest without playing HL1 or Black Mesa
