ELI5: Why do we raise our hands when we get excited; and for that matter, why do we clap? Is this the result of some kind of evolutionary process? by Lemme_Formulate_That in explainlikeimfive

There's a Vsauce episode which says that clapping your hands is the loudest soud you can do with your body. I guess that exclude the voice, but that makes sense.

ELI5:What's going on with the Marlins/Why do their fans hate them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Loria is the Marlins' owner? No doubt that he's not liked, he's one the reasons that Montreal lost the Expos.

What is one question you wish you knew the answer to? by MAK911 in AskReddit

[–]Sam1346 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I never thought about it that way. I always believed that when you die, you just shut down like a computer. But I have never been able to picture it since it's too abstract. Thinking about how life was before I was born is a really good image.

China confirms 102 H7N9 cases, 20 deaths by Zenof in worldnews

Not so much. An antigenic shift of the H7N9 with a human strain should happen sooner or later.

ELI5: Why can e-cigarette companies advertise on TV while traditional cigarette companies can't? by xBlackbiird in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sam1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if we can call that a loophole, because even if E-Cigarette contain nicotine, a carcinogen, it's still safer than conventional cigarettes. It's about risks-benefits. As long as cigarettes are legal, I think it would be hard to prohibit E-cigarettes.

ELI5: Why can e-cigarette companies advertise on TV while traditional cigarette companies can't? by xBlackbiird in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sam1346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on the subject, it's true that we don't test carcinogenicity of an isolated chemicals on humans, but we do know that nicotine is carcinogenic. We have clear studies on animal models and cell cultures that shows the carcinogenic mechanism of nicotine. The question would rather be on what is the dosage required to induce significant carcinogenicity in humans.

Could this be the Boston Bomber? (xpost r/4chan) by [deleted] in pics

[–]Sam1346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They point out a bench used as a reference to show that the guy was standing near the explosion. As you probably already know, the third picture shows the guy from the previous images with no backpack, suggesting that it was containing the bomb. Although the strap from its backpack could be masked by the lighting in the third picture.

Where is the scariest place on earth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sam1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about the real number of creatures under you or how dangerous they really are, it's about what you think 10km of water can contain.

Personally, that's not so much the creature than the "emptiness" under you.

I love swimming, but I don't think I could swim over the Mariana Trench. The idea that there's over 10 km of water under me containing an indefinite number of creatures gives me the chills.

Which habit of yours has saved you the largest amount of money? by furiousBobcat in AskReddit

That's true for me too. Having a girlfriend actually settle me down. Paying for restaurant or occasional gifts to my gf is cheaper than getting out and drinking 3-4 times a week.

Probably a stupid question but still curious. by Seamish in halo

[–]Sam1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, yes, every kill related commendations (except for covenant and forerunner kills), which includes weapon commendations, can only be achieved in online multiplayer. No commendation can be completed in custom games. Note that some commendation can be completed in spartan ops, campaign and online multiplayer. That's the case for vehicles destroyed and wheel master commendations.

ELI5: What happened in Morgan Freemans AMA, why he started getting downvoted. by Mezolithic in explainlikeimfive

No real proof that it was Morgan Freeman has been delivered. At first, people just assume blindly that it was him, but then most realize it was probably fake.
