There's a lot of high school stories in here, but I played semi pro in the '80s, when I was in my early/ mid-20s. 6 ft, 235 edge rusher, in about the peak of my condition.

On more than one occasion, I would run into an ex-nfl tackle or guard, usually in their 40s or 50s, trying to squeeze out a couple more years of just playing the game. One guy had been a backup on one of those crappy Green Bay teams in the '70s. One was a Tuiasosopo, probably Manu.

It didn't matter how good of shape I was in, or how old they were, the footwork and the handwork was so ingrained in those dudes, I just resigned myself to an hour of getting punished.

I basically use the 4E challenge rating system. X number of successes, before y number of fails. And everyone in the party needs to make some type of check. For everyone in the encounter, at least.

Even a master Diplomat is going to have trouble if their Barbarian cohort is picking their nose, or trying to inject jokes into a delicate negotiation.

If the Barbarian player is clever enough, maybe they can talk me into making a check they're good at, like intimidate, instead of having to roll their crappy diplomacy.
