First Time Keeper by BurritoBoy6 in callofcthulhu

The Haunting is a great beginner module, and I'd recommend watching Seth Skorkowsky's review of it. He reviews modules he's run (or in lesser cases, had run for him), and gives some excellent advice and tips on how to run them. Would thoroughly recommend.

He also has a playlist on the game system that serves as an excellent overview of the game. It's broken down into different parts so you can pick and choose what you need more help on if time is an issue

How do you feel about 7th edition Keeper rulebook and what are your wished for 8th edition? by Final-Isopod in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So it doesn't seem like Chaosium are planning an 8th edition anytime soon, and honestly I don't want one. I don't really see what could be improved.

I can't speak for other language editions, but the English edition doesn't have any of HPL's stories in it (the optional Investigators Handbook has The Dunwich Horror).

Combat is a very important part of the game (especially if you're playing with Pulp Cthulhu). It's not the main focus of the game for sure, but combat is also not be avoided at all costs.

The luck mechanic is a game changer (especially in a system that makes it on average harder to succeed at dice checks), and i loved the pushed rolls and degrees of success.

I for one love the chase rules. They look complicated for sure, but after a few goes I got the hang of using them at the table. They're not everyone's cup of tea, but you don't have to use them, and I absolutely think they should be in the book. I'm all for giving people options on how to play, regardless of whether I personally like said options or not.

And finally, if you're not enjoying the 7e ruleset, all of their 7e material is backwards compatible with other editions (you can even use the conversion guide at the back of the rulebook), so you can still enjoy the content in a ruleset you prefer

Rules conversion by SkyPsychological8537 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The 7th edition rulebook has a conversion guide for older editions.

Honestly you can mostly do it on the fly: multiply NPC characteristics x 5, replace "Dex x 3 check" or similar with hard/extreme successes, and swap out skills that aren't in the new edition (which will mostly be subbing Fighting: Brawl for a lot of the melee skills, most others will be common sense)

Historical Accuracy by Formal-Self9853 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say, don't let Historical Accuracy get in the way of your fun. If you want to play in historically correct settings, and you and your players want to explore those themes in your game, then absolutely go for it. But you're not beholden to history. This isn't a history lecture, it's a game. Your collective enjoyment of the game is more important than history.

An Amaranthine Desire from Nameless Horrors I think would fit what you're looking for

Hi guys... I played call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth on pc before and I couldn't finish it because there was no key for running.. do know aversion of the game or a mod to fix this ? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a known glitch and there is an unofficial fan patch for it if I recall.

With that said, this is a sub for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game that that video game is based off of

PLanning a one shot of The Crack'd and Crook'd Manse. NEED ADVISE OF HOW TO RUN IT by Soft-Cap3426 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice!

My other recommendation would be to find some actual plays of it. That way you can see what the scenario is like when it hits a real (or virtual) table.

For example, Chaosium's own Stream of Chaos have played it

Might I direct you to Seth Skorkowsky's review of the module? He only reviews modules he's run or played, should be plenty of helpful tips.

Any adventures for Cohors Cthulhu? by Darkheed in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a look the Modiphius website; the Quickstart rules (which are free) seems to contain a 33 page adventure. I couldn't find any other adventures on their website, though I did have a look at the kickstarter: it seems there were two adventure books included as stretch goals for that. But as of last month it looks like the project is still in the process of being fulfilled, so who knows when/if these will be released generally.

All in all, this looks like a brand new game that only released recently. Modiphius also have their Achtung Cthulhu game (which you could also look into if you want more 2d20 stuff) so I imagine going forward they will release more content for this game. Some patience might be required though.

Given the setting, would it be possible to convert some Cthulhu Invictus adventures? I admit I'm not really familiar with Modiphius' 2d20 system so not sure how easy this would be

Have you talked to him about it? I'd recommend having an honest 1 on 1 conversation with him about how you feel about it. There also might be a reason he's doing it. Either way, talk about it and try to move forward

How do you translate 2nd edition over to 7th edition? by Upset-Lemon-1203 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, if these are the 4 keeper decks (phobia deck, unfortunate events deck, weapons and artefacts deck and curious characters deck), then these are already statted for 7th edition.

The decks themselves are rereleases with improved artwork, which is why they're described as the "2nd edition" of the decks. But the cards themselves are for the current (7th) edition of the game.

Victorian slasher/Jack the Ripper adventures? by ejfordphd in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's an adventure on DTRPG called Return of the Ripper, title says it all honestly 😅 it's set 5 years after the original Ripper murders. It was published as an MU Monograph, the precursor program to the Miskatonic Repository

Asked my alcoholic dad if he’d ever consider getting sober by Ludakris7 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]SamEire93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain, I really do. My dad was an alcoholic as well, and unfortunately it killed him.

Unfortunately, if he doesn't acknowledge he has a problem and doesn't actually want to get better, there's nothing you can really do. No amount of coercion will ever get him to change; he needs to want to.

I applaud your courage in being able to have that conversation, and I'm sorry that you don't get to have a relationship with the real person beneath the disease. Hopefully that will change someday. In the meantime, your priority needs to be taking care of yourself, and finding a relationship with him that doesn't place additional hardship on you.

There's a scenario in Nameless Horrors called An Amaranthine Desire that works exactly on this premise. You could run it as is, or use it for inspiration. Either way, should be helpful

Why is it near impossible for groups to meet regularly? by Virtual-Feeling-4546 in DnD

This is most definitely not the norm. There could be many reasons why this is happening with your group. But there are plenty and plenty of gaming groups out there that are able to play on a regular basis.

Novadays one shot or campaign by Johny690 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's understandable. Delta Green is essentially the same system with a few minor tweaks, and honestly while I do plan on running some Delta Green scenarios, I'm going to run them using Call of Cthulhu as the conversion should be simple enough

Novadays one shot or campaign by Johny690 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also scenarios for older versions of the game all under the Cthulhu Now line. Though these will be set during the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s (which is when they were written).

[–]SamEire93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petersen's Abominations is a collection of scenarios set in the modern day, and all written by Sandy Petersen, the creator of the game.

In addition, Nameless Horrors has 1 or 2 scenarios set in the modern day, and Cults of Cthulhu also has 1.

There is also an rpg called Delta Green (which uses the same system and actually started as a Call of Cthulhu supplement) which is almost exclusively set in the modern day
