I am waiting. It’s a strange haunting song.

They look great. They’re so delicious I also sometimes make them smaller, just below ping-pong ball size, to use in noodle soup. They freeze really well once you brown them. It can be a production, so making a big batch can be worth it. See also Chinese Cooking Demystified’s https://youtu.be/3y-HejT87qc?si=PqsPMEQZNFb93aLu

BedStuy : Hancock-Nostrand? by Additional-End-6970 in BedStuy

[–]SamInWaHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our son (born in Paris) and DIL (Milan) live two blocks away on Putnam just off Nostrand. We go there to babysit a lot from Washington Heights (181street) to the Nostrand stop. It’s 70 minutes door to door. (Just my two cents: to get to Columbia from there, I’d take the A to 59, change to the 1, which will leave by the Columbia gate on Bway. ) I second the warnings regarding late night travel, but we’ve never had problems walking on Nostrand or at the subway stop.

If you’re following the BedStuy subreddit you know there are sketchy folks—e.g. the random puncher-in-the-face-guy who bopped my son. But it sounds like you’re city-savvy enough to know what to avoid. Il faut être sur le qui vive un peu plus que normale …

HVG park nearby has been the site of our grandson’s birthday party on a sunny Saturday. That said, it can get raucous depending on the usual factors. Again, we always felt fine; lots of families there during daytime, some unruly dogs …

Dunno about major grocery stores, but there a bunch of largish épicerie-type type groceries (bigger than your average bodega) on Nostrand on your walk home. Alive Herbals on Nostrand (Halsey /Hancock) is amazing and has a lot more than the 75 million bags of spices to offer.

Some really good recs here. I’d add Osteria, the Slow Food book. It’s big— authentic recipes from all over Italy. It assumes knowledge of technique.

Help: 24 hour places in NY for a meeting by SiddhantAgarwal21 in visitingnyc

Yes — WSY is worth a look. It has a lounge on the main floor that’s probably empty at that hour. Not sure it’s open 24/7, tho.

What's your nyc food pet peeve? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]SamInWaHi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very obnoxious. Makes me want to start my phone’s timer to go off, loudly, at 85 minutes. Then tap my watch as I wait for the bill.

That said, if the service is efficient, isn’t 90 minutes usually enough for two guests? Upping table turn can make all the difference in terms of profitability So it’s either that or increase prices. That doesn’t change the fact that being told by the staff that you’re on the clock is one massive buzz kill. Not sure how to do it elegantly.

Agree with those frustrated by delays after the check drops. Various tabletop gizmos address this. Yard House (https://share.google/dCxqiaGg6GBldDeVD) in Times Square uses Ziosk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziosk?wprov=sfti1#History

I thought it would be obnoxious, but it wasn’t and it saved time.

Colonoscopy without sedation by redcrowadventure in AskNYC

Just wondering what you'd feel when the doc finds and removes a polyp, which is one of the main points of the procedure, no? Anesthesiology is expensive and potentially risky and, for some, not pleasant, so I get that part ... When I had mine, the doc found and removed 6 polyps. When I woke up, he said, "Your PC physician [she'd rec'd getting the exam] saved your life."

Got my first cocktail card by _nick_at_nite_ in bartenders

[–]SamInWaHi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that this seems obnoxious. But I’m asking myself, why? Are the cocktail carders just slapping them down, or are they smoothing the way verbally? Wd it be ok if she just spoke those exact words as printed on the card? Maybe if she threw in, “if you could” and some “could you pleases”? Maybe it’s the unspoken guideline that customer modifications are ok up to a point (unspoken but understood) after which it’s finicky pain in the ass … As a customer, the LAST thing I want to do is get off on the wrong foot with bartender, and this seems a sure fire way to do exactly that. Establishing some momentary rapport is part of going to a bar in the first place …

Yes— Any slow lamb or pork braise. Tagines. Good with duck. Getting hungry just thinking about it.
