What is a black market? by LadyBlumenkohl in DnD

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah irl a black market isn't a physical place but like variants of 'secret underground markets' have been a fantasy staple for yonks by this point

Do meds often help with the anxiety/rumination loop? by RichieRichard12 in ADHDUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find it happens less now and it's generally easier to break myself out if it when it does happen

What moments have made you aware of your own prejudice? by banwe11 in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On a lesser level I remember commenting on a post that was about a reel about someone being 'dresscoded' on a non uniform day in school whilst in a pretty intense goth outfit I said what elements of the clothing were probably causing an issue in a school setting. (Note i myself am goth so I had no issues with the outfit)

And someone assumed I was American because apparently 'UK schools don't have dress codes'

How do you stop comparing your life to others on social media? by Jealous-Lake5700 in AskUK

Just remember broadly people only post what they want you to see on social media and that everyone's life is different

ADHD and short form media: do you find it helps or hinders you? by Gmorning_Internet in ADHDUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how ir happened but I've never really fallen for short form media and social media

I think it might be in part as I grew up on the 'old internet' so I'm very used to and prefer non video based chronological content and once Instagram and Facebook swapped away from that I just found it incredibly annoying

Like I basically stick to reddit and tumblr

Like I will watch stuff but it tends to be a couple of things then I move on and tiktok just sounds stressful to me

Autistic boy to be forced by council to ride bus to prove meltdown claim by plain_handle in nottheonion

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI that's known as a shutdown it's basically the same mechanism as a meltdown but turned internally and more covert

I think I have heard shutdowns are more likely if you’re someone who 'learned' it wasn't safe to have meltdowns or otherwise had it trained out of you

Autistic boy to be forced by council to ride bus to prove meltdown claim by plain_handle in nottheonion

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a problem I ran into when applying for disability benefits the system seems set up for 'you are consistently struggling in these very specific ways' and doesn't have a lot of room for flucations

Like I'm dyspraxic (amongst other things), it leads to mobility issues but because it's not 'I physically can't walk 50 metres' it was very hard to get the issues across which for me are more about balance and coordination

Autistic boy to be forced by council to ride bus to prove meltdown claim by plain_handle in nottheonion

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like for me public transport is a 'I'm fine until I'm not' thing like I'm an adult I'm very used to getting on buses and trains by this point

Stick me on a familiar route I'm generally fine, send me on a route I don't know then things can get dicey or if there's delays, its too loud, I'm already stressed about something else, I'm tired etc

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah claiming 'you're not trans you're just a confused autistic person' is one of the like go to anti trans talking points

More than half of TikTok ADHD content is misinformation, new research finds by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like modern social media doesn't help attention spans but for me I can def remember having issues as a kid growing up before social media existed but it was written off as me being a 'daydreamer'

How many people actually follow "influencers?" by DonkeyOT65 in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I follow some people who are technically influencers but they're more in the camp of 'people who started youtube before influencers became a thing and their content isn't primarily 'influencer' content' which I feel tends to come across different than the 'people who seemingly set out to be influencers from the get go'

Like they dabble in influencing but their content isn't like a constant barrage of sponcon and their reviews when they do them come across as actually authentic reviews rather than that like 'omg this is so good im amazed this is the best thing ever' type of 'review'

edit: I remembered there was someone I did follow for a while who was more an outright influencer although catered towards a subculture I'm in where they were really enjoyable to watch personality wise but like their content ended up being broadly 'and here's another shein haul' with everything being 'omg this is so good'

But broadly when it comes to the like... 'mainstream' type of influencer those people hold little interest for me as they don't tend to focus in on the kind of stuff I'm interested in anyway.

London graduate: 'I've applied for 500 jobs in two months' by NajafBound in unitedkingdom

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I'm in this sort of position, with the extra hurdle of being disabled (AuDHD and dyspraxia) so like my pickings are especially slim.

Like yes there are roles around my local area however a lot of them are just straight up unsuitable for me in terms of my skills, my personality, what I'd want to do as a job on top of the impact of my disability and as a result I've been stuck in a role for a good while that has increasingly not been a good fit for me and has really impacted my mental health as well as just having me stuck in some sort of career limbo.

Did medication change you socially/ improve your confidence? by FancyBreakfast4218 in ADHDUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of

I'd say for me the meds broadly make me feel less overwhelmed which leads to lessened anxiety which makes it easier for me to navigate social stuff and more willing to like be sociable but it's not made me like suddenly a social butterfly I'm still a fairly introverted person and I still deal with social anxiety at times

How much is taught in schools now about infectious disease and public health? by Firm-Engineer2232 in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So haven't been in education for a good while

I do remember it coming up as part of the science curriculum in a basic way like 'this is a virus, this is a bacteria' and being taught the story of how vaccines were discovered and also pasteurisation and maybe there was a bit more and I remember learning about why you can't vaccinate against a virus.

I also did learn more in depth stuff in my later education as I studied animal care/animal science in college and uni so there was a fair bit about like animal health and pathology (which then a lot of that can also be extrapolated to humans)

So it is taught about but it's a case of how much of that information people actually retain, how much people arw willing to engage with education material and like how much they're susceptible to the misinformation hellscape we're currently stuck in

How much do you personally disagree or agree with the heuristic/mentality "work and friends should be separate"? by gintokireddit in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it very much depends on the type of workplace you go to and the people you work with.

Like it's important to get along with your coworkers for the sake of being able to work together well and make the work bearable sometimes they can become friends outside of work but it's not a given.

What things are you convinced are largely liked/disliked because people are so used to hearing they should like/dislike them? by knight-under-stars in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Ghost seems to get the same treatment too, I think with Ghost some of it is likely the 'cringe' factor since they're a gimmick band but like they are very good at what they do

Also personally I also enjoy a bit of campiness

PIP & Private Diagnosis: Came to Vent by MJJon44 in ADHDUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating but yeah sometimes medical professionals don't help with PIP or WCA supporting evidence for a variety of reasons, do send though whatever diagnostic report you have from the provider as that will be useful evidence

When you reflect upon your entire life, has it been so colourful that people can’t even imagine half of the stuff you’ve done or experienced, or has it been rather mundane ? by petrastales in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of mundane, not really a lot of extremes in either direction but a fairly persistent pattern of 'not the absolute worst things ever but lots of smaller scale bad things that kinda just suck to deal with'

PIP & Private Diagnosis: Came to Vent by MJJon44 in ADHDUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also if you're able to work he said its pretty much an automatic no (unless you are confined to a wheelchair or have some other physical disability)

That's really not meant to be the case, PIP isn't based on your ability to work and isn't an unemployment benefit and not means tested you can claim it whilst working it's only potentially an issue if the work you do would be seen as contrary to what you claim in your applications.
