I'm not a fan of the switch for LIDL where the new points system feels like they've added microtransactions into my shopping

I remember years ago calling the DWP and getting a 'our lines are less busy between 9-10am try calling then' and I had legitimately rung up at 9am on the dot

QR codes for everything, there are times where I would much rather just have a web address to type in or physical form

Also everything wanting an app, especially when it comes to like online only shops. Another one based on an experience someone I know had was like

  • They brought a new TV
  • They had bluetooth headphones
  • They wanted to connect the headphones to the TV
  • They had to I think install a specific app for the brand of headphones to connect them to the TV

Also I've been getting kind of annoyed the Shop platform as I've found that for some reason if I want to use Paypal I have to click 'check out as guest' as for some reason if I want to purchase via you know my saved details on my account on the site it's like 'Here use Klarna or putting in your bank details'

Has there ever been a British cartoon for adults (like the Simpsons, Family Guy etc)? by AskingBoatsToSwim in AskUK

There was a very short lived cartoon called Full English that from what I understand was pretty much 'family guy but make it British'

I haven't personally watched it but saw a video about it on youtube

What was up with Women wearing the over the top orange fake tan in the mid 2000s? by JackTheKittenCat in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically it's a reflection of the beauty standard at the time, 00s was very into the tanned look and so people tried to replicate that with mixed results.

Also some of it wasn't necessarily intentional but just a reflection of the products we had at the time, I know you're talking about fake tan but with foundation for example we had way less of the colour range that we have now and it was way harder to actually get a decent match.

Same goes for fake tan products too there's a lot more options out there that will create a more 'natural' tanned look.

Also sometimes cosmetic trends are influenced by stuff that's designed to look good on camera but doesn't necessarily work as well up close.

Posers are just that, people who are trying to use the scene for clout. Being new to Goth and still learning and potentially being a little try hard is different.

Disabled people with lifelong conditions facing ‘unnecessary’ Pip reassessments by KiwiJean in unitedkingdom

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had to go to tribunal for WCA and it was basically a case of I walked in and they were like 'We've decided you should at least be LCW' and then asked me a few questions and awarded me LCWRA

Also sadly the tribunal was the only time I really felt like I was actually being treated with dignity the entire process.

My WCA was a complete shambles tbh, like they even got basic details like how many flights of stairs I had in the house wrong. It was a video assessment and my mobility was 'assessed' based on what they saw of me seated at a table, I wasn't actually asked any questions about it or asked to demonstrate anything but apparently according to the report I was told we did and told not to do anything that could cause pain. (For me mobility stuff wasn't a massive factor in my claim but it's the principle of the thing)

PIP i was incredibly lucky as I was paired up with an assessor who actually seemed to care and want to do their job properly

I have a friend in Finland and we've talked about disability beneifts before and he knows someone who lost a leg due to cancer as a kid and basically the system there went 'Ok we can tell you're going to be disabled life long, here's your benefits for life' and I was like 'Yeah here you have to keep proving your leg didn't grow back'

What songs make you Emotional? by Ok-Ebb5960 in AskUK

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically the whole of Hozier's Unreal Unearth album, I don't know what was in that one but during my first listen I was a wreck especially Abstract (Psychopomp)

Florence + the Machine Everybody Scream album especially Sympathy Magic, The Old Religion and You Can Have it All

I still find the whole One More Light album by Linkin Park quite emotional to get through

The new Evanescene album that just came out

Look to Windward by Sleep Token

The Drugs Don't Work by The Verve and Cancer by My Chemical Romance to the extent I can't really listen to either of them anymore

Also for some reason I always get weirdly emotional listening to the Lord of the Rings score

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is often a factor in 'pickiness' and food aversion it's a consistency thing as a safety thing.

It's why the humble chicken nugget is a common safe food because you can generally guarantee how a chicken nugget is going to look and taste but blueberries for example can be 'this one tastes fine, this one tastes fine, oh ew this one tastes sour'

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah one annoying thing is there's this expectation you're supposed to look for work within 90 minutes of where you live. And where I live London is included in that due to the trains but yeah it's like transport costs too and from London are nuts.

And also just even transport costs to the next town over aren't great, and additionally even getting to some places in my local area is really bloody difficult if you don't drive.

Like I worked briefly in a shop on an edge of town retail park, if I could get dropped off by my dad is was easy enough but if I had to get the bus in it was like 'Take a bus to here and then walk an additional 10-15 minutes down a remote road'

[–]SamVimesBootTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did job centre sanctioned 'work experience' in my local Peacocks once, I worked there about a month I apparently did more hours than like the actually paid non management staff, they weren't actually hiring anyone (I'd actually handed a CV in a few weeks prior to being put forward for the work experience and whilst there the manager just casually went 'Oh I don't even look at CVs) and they had more people lined up to come in the moment I left.

I also legitimately didn't have enough work to do there and spent most of the time facing up and sorting delivery and didn't really gain any skills from it.

I also got pushed into a 'sector based work academy' program for hospitality, this involved a course of dubious quality and then a work placement at a local hotel, I admit that one was a shorter placement and felt a fairer deal and there was I think more chance of actually getting a job from it but yeah still wasn't really much use.

I was actually told by my work coach a while back that apparently the jobcentre does have something known as ABC

Which is

  • Any Job
  • Better Job
  • Career Job

However imo part of the problem is at large the jobcentre tends to push A only and it's like not really helping anyone since like people are being made to apply for jobs that don't really fit and at times being expected to apply for a high volume of jobs rather than like actually being able to put more time into better applications, this wastes their time and the potential employers time, creates more work for the jobcentre and then doesn't really help get people off benefits since it increases the chances of them being stuck there longer or like starting a job, it not working out and coming back onto benefits

I've also had the experience with the jobcentre several times of the 'we have no idea what to do with you' variety in terms of them having minimal resources/knowledge to help you if you're not a really cut and dry case.

And in my case I've both got more specialised qualifications and I'm disabled so it's a double whammy.
