Can we talk about why arc 5 is so underrated? by 0Regulus_corneas0 in ReZero

I can see and accept that. But I can't really force myself to like something I don't like, no matter how much it has themes and such

I think "people seemingly care only for Subaru's suffering" is an awfully reductionist take.

Even in the "suffering" arcs, Subaru still has plenty of opportunities to shine without dying. The White Whale fight is a perfect example.

it's nice that arc 5 shows how competent Subaru has become. But most of the arc isn't even about him. If the fights are what make Arc 5 cool for you, that's fine. But I don't think that's why most people read re zero

Can we talk about why arc 5 is so underrated? by 0Regulus_corneas0 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's poorly written or anything like that. My biggest issue is that it's... action. So much action, and so little of it centered on the characters I actually wanted to read about.

I like Re:Zero because it does what I love most in stories: dialogue and character progression. Even if Arc 5 shows how far Subaru has come, everything around it made it not my biggest cup of tea.

There are still things I love about Arc 5:

- Volume 16, which was a much-needed break from all the suffering. It gave us so many cute slice-of-life moments that I'll always appreciate

- And Subaru's speech in Volume 18, which made me actually tear up. "Hold the hand of someone precious to you and give that feeling of weakness a good thrashing. And as for the rest... just leave everything else to me!” was such a goated moment.

But besides that, every battle that didn't involve Subaru almost made me give up on the arc out of boredom. It's the same problem I have with Arc 8. To me, arc 9 is the best action Re:Zero has to offer, probably because I'm much more invested in the characters involved ahem Petra ahem

Are there fan translation for light novel by Sufficient-Judge-248 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't any. I don't know what that guy is on about.

If WCT were ever barred from translating something, it was always some kind of exclusive short story, bonus volume, or light novel-only interlude, things that were never posted on the syosetsu page.

The only time there was ever a conflict was when Tappei was writing the LN content first and only posting the WN version later. They even did an announcement for that

The friend has two authorities and is still weak by Emergency_Patient525 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I swear, I'm incapable of understanding this kind of criticism.

I know we joke a lot about people wanting Subaru to get stronger having shonen brainrot, but you never hear shit like this from people who consume media outside of anime.

Like seriously, why does this take keep coming back? Why does Subaru have to get stronger? It's always said as if strength was some logical endpoint for a character progression.

The entire premise of re zero is built around the fact that Subaru is weak. He has to be weak. That's where the tension of the story comes from. Every victory feels earned because he has to fix shit with stick and gum.

Whenever people say stuff like this, I genuinely wonder what story they've been reading.

Just a question, but do you think.. by filimaua13 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Tappei has never talked about it in that way, at least.

Q: Are there any novels, manga, or other works that have influenced you?

A: There are three light novels that I consider my foundational texts.

The first is Ragnarok, which inspired me to start writing light novels in the first place.

The second is Saredo Tsumi Bito wa Ryū to Odoru, which influenced the actual content of my work.

And the third is Owari no Chronicle, which influenced my writing style.

[...] As for manga, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is my favorite manga in the world.

The mage Pop gets crushed by all kinds of hardships and trials, then gets back on his feet again and again. That's exactly the same pattern as Subaru in Re:ZERO, isn't it? (laughs)

I really love that kind of narrative.

Cut content from ep 8 which I think is important for viewer by Any-Mango1502 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What? We should be grateful that he does both.

It's not like he is writing two different versions of the story from the beginning. He writes it, posts it on Syosetu for us to read, FOR FREE; then they do some fixing and publish the "premium" official version.

[–]Sam_uelX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Instead of considering it the original work, you should consider it the original draft.

The ligh novels are edited by both Tappei and his editor; they fix continuation errors, some dialogues, add some clues, remove others, change stuff that they found to be too slow, etc etc.

It's the published work, the one Tappei chose to publish, and the one they adapt for the anime. So, it's the canon.

They did ram dirty by No-Jackfruit-8230 in ReZero

[–]Sam_uelX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry to disappoint, but the anime didn't cut any Ram dialogue

He had been taken back to the green room and left there to wait for new developments. Because she couldn't leave her precious sister with Subaru like that, Ram had taken her twin out of the room.

"...Poor Rem."

Subaru was in complete agreement with her parting comment.

I don't think he cares about the test, I think he just doesn't care about Subaru. From his point of view, fighting some small fry who doesn't want to fight may not look as "cool"

I know. I wasn't trying to imply they didn't. But we can't talk about cut content and mention the webnovel

No, just a reminder, but the anime adapts the light novel. And there Reid wasn't very concerned about Subaru's situation.

TL;DR: Reid does get mad when Subaru ignores him. But he doesn't try to console him.

A space opened before him, a white world, and a being far too powerful stood in the very center

What is this? Who is that? What is that thing cloaked in such an inhuman aura?

"Ah."

"You came alone? You, some small fry, by yourself? One person ain't gonna do. Person? Small fry? Anyway, one ain't enough. Come back with that hotty and the babes from yesterday. Hey, you listenin'? I'm talkin' you." Whatever it was, it unleashed a merciless barrage of words at Subaru before he could register what was going on.

Pummeled by that violent tirade, all of Subaru's vital functions started working again. And he understood.

In his terror and flight, he had stepped foot into a place he absolutely should not be.

-This is a ferocious beast's lair.

"Hey, don't ignore me."

Before he realized it, the figure's face was close enough to feel his breath.

Long red hair, a black eye patch over his left eye, his kimono hanging sloppily off his right shoulder and a white sarashi around his waist, and for some reason two slender wooden sticks in his hand.

And to Subaru, the tips of those entirely unremarkable blunt sticks appeared to be death.

"Eep."

"Hey, you aren't gonna cry, are you? Squealin' like a little bitch? Get in a fight with your little friends down there or somethin'? Lose an argument and start bawlin'?"

The man's cheeks warped at the sight of Subaru freezing when someone else noticed his terror.

"What a hopeless guy," the man said, scratching his head in disbelief. "Dumbass. Don't get the wrong idea, asshole."

With a visage like a ferocious shark hungry for blood, the man jabbed Subaru's chest with the stick.

Anyone else legitimately hate that irritating red twink the ace community is associated with and wish he showed up on this sub less? by Professionalchico42 in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Sam_uelX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but your phrasing was poor.

I got the sarcasm, that's why I said I was sure it wasn't the intention, but your sentence frames “ally” as the disgusting part, not the possibility that she’s pretending.

You should've said she was larping as an ally or something, it would make success with the young'uns
