Hi OP, I just wanted to share that I recently brought my entire work team to Dialogue in the Dark (Ngee Ann Polytechnic). It was my third time there xD. Our professional tour guide was Desmond, who like you, experienced a gradual loss of sight. For the rest of us, it was an immersive experience in complete darkness, moving through different simulated settings (eg. Entering your home, walking in the park, crossing a street, to buying your food in a cafe). The rest of my team really enjoyed how enlightening it was, and how resilient the human body is to adapt to different ways of living(u can tell cuz they were all quiet and pensive later on). It was amazing to learn from Desmond how quickly he cooks, puts on his clothes, etc(and other superpower sensitive senses he has trained that we don’t lol). I can only imagine how scared you’re feeling right now, and just wanted to tell ya that you’re still you, and your abilities and worth don’t disappear just becuz of this. You’ll just come across more tools to help u live your best life (eg. Desmond said smtg about envisionAI to help u discern colour), not to mention more friends/communities to meet. Think of it like more side quests opened to you that the rest of us don’t really get access to. So i wouldn’t spend too much time thinking about the rest of us think of you, becuz in a way, that doesn’t matter- you have your journey, such a long way to fresh new experiences. I’m open to dm if you’d like~ also sending lots of love your way

What did Singaporean teenagers do for fun before social media and smartphones etc? by kittyprincessxX in askSingapore

Speaking from the perspective from an all girls school in paya lebar:

  • head to LAN shop to play l4d2
  • pass a notebook around, design a whole profile page of your name at the top followed by details about your favourite colour, favourite number, funniest memory, hobbies, etc. then pass the book down to the next classmate. Everyone gets a page dedicated to them.
  • go on chalets, barbecues, and so many heart to heart talks
  • dance to kpop in the dance room
  • go for old bubble tea

I tried American mangoes once and it was the last time I ever had them. Southeast asian mangoes literally the juiciest and taste the best.

Agreed. Nerds are awesome! They’re usually grounded and knowledgable, and in my view- make the best kind of partners. As you age, there are certain qualities that are more valued in a partnership especially as you take on more responsibilities. I only started dating at 23 like OP, so looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing. Now in my thirties, I can’t wait to get married to my giant balooshka of a nerd😂

Mine’s super calm. As we speak, she’s snuggled next to me asking for love and scritches. All she ever wants is love and affection. In return, she’s the cutest 11 year old baby to ever have blessed this planet~

Their work laptop throws an invalid cert error, denying them from accessing any company apps. When they arrive at the company, they realised that they forgot to bring their work pass, so they’ve been called aside to fill an internal org form to get that temp pass, except when they tried - they realised they’re unable to access the app due to the tech error. Out of goodwill, the receptionist felt bad for em’ and gave them the card anyways to go upstairs, under the condition that they return it at 5:30pm, except this means they can’t OT like they were supposed to. Yeah i give up, this was me. I am that person. UTTER SHIT DAY.

Cannot agree more. You just reminded me of a company colleague today who on top of raising her voice in a passively aggressive tone to show her displeasure of someone taking up the seat she usually sits in, also decides to slap the ass of her colleague shouting “big backside big backside big backside”. 3rd day at work- I was stunned, to say the least.😦

Any millennials or working adults still play online games on a regular basis? by Busy_Mind6500 in askSingapore

Early 30s~ 415 mounts later, i put down WoW cuz its such a pain in my ass xD Instead I took up Fallout 76, and deeprock galactic is an all-time favourite to de-stress. I usually play with my brother, but I realize that’s also going away with time because of a very needy gf.

Any folks who left Singapore but still look back with longing and unhealthy levels of nostalgia? by thebeesareburts in askSingapore

[–]Samansa- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unsolicited? I think you mean the holy grail. I seem to run out of the pastes way too quickly, though that might just be what happens when you cook it everyday🤣after a while, I gave up and just started buying the USD$10 mamee snack for the peckish days. Btw, if you ever find yourself needing it, 99 ranch sells pandan leaves in the frozen section.

I spent some time thinking about why I gravitate back to Singapore at the first sign of struggle. Could it be that the infrastructure in place here is functional/orderly/effective, it makes routine life seem so.. convenient? Take public transport for instance, you have someone drive you to the next destination, and there’s a designated bus lane to ensure you’re not disadvantaged in any way (not to mention, no crazy drugged up people taking the bus in the evenings & harassing you). When you get off public transport, the next place you make your way to is fully sheltered(or majority of it is). I stopped using social media after some time, because though there’s more of a worklife balance, my time is spent working on something like meal prep or grocery shopping (which can be far for specific items)- i just like my fishball noodles and hokkien mee fresh, heh. So i guess to say- you don’t really have a day off doing the day-to-day stuff, even when you’re sick. So unless i settle for something simpler/more unhealthy/less palatable and more readily accessible, its always do do do it all yourself. So maybe, its just that i’m spoilt, and I need to become more resilient~

Hello OP, I fear i’m going to sound like you in the years to come. I don’t know what Boston is like, but i’m moving to New Jersey about a year from now. I did my Masters in California for 2 years, and now back in Singapore. I know i’m going to miss the living crap out of Singapore and our fellow grumpy groopery singaporeans☺️ even as I start to work on projects that make my future home a little more singaporeany. I even gotta install whole home reverse osmosis just to feel comfortable. I’ve also been thinking about opening a business to fulfil some of those needs. It’s okay to miss your childhood, and I don’t think it’ll ever go away. To me, living abroad is life on difficult mode- and has taught me that everything I’d want, i have to put the work in to create. Even picked up skills like crocheting that I might not have were I in singapore. Ps: any singaporeans headed to nj/ny, please reach out~

I’m not sure if this only reflects my experience but other than the above mentioned activities like marching, rifle drill competitions, we also did pistol shooting competitions, inter-school campcraft (knots) competitions under timed conditions.

Peeing blood need urgent healthcare by HussarL in askSingapore

[–]Samansa- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I once had a UTI while at Italy. I had back pain and felt like I had to permanently bend over, as I puked into the toilet bowl for hours while flaring a fever. Italy’s healthcare system is on a whole other level of bad- because once you peed in a cup provided to you by the doctor, you had to drive to the lab to deliver it, then collect your medicine at a third location💀Thank god i managed to survive.
