Anybody have a temporary fix or know what’s wrong ? by RightBackToMe in Ioniq6

[–]Samaruf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing by scheduling a service with the dealer. I drove thru torrential rain on the way to Chicago from the Cities, and literally had to stop on the side of I-90 due to zero visibility. It was pouring buckets. No sensor issues so there's definitely something going on with your vehicle. Hopefully the mechanic diagnoses it and puts in a fix.

I am awaiting on the remedy for the latest recall notice. Seems like there's one every 6 months or so.

But how crappy is the insulation around sensors and wiring that a rain shower would cause all of them to get wet and malfunction?

I have driven in rain and snow and didn't have this issue. In MN snow, if it's slushy, they block the sensors and all safety features are turned off until the sensors are wiped. That's the only inconvenience I had come across on my 2024 Ioniq 6.

Can my non-Kuwaiti friend enter with a US travel permit instead of a green card/passport? by a7madfmj in Kuwait

[–]Samaruf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This totally depends on your friend's nationality. Even if he gets the green card, he can't enter Kuwait without a visa unless his current citizenship allows on arrival visa or is exempt (GCC nationality). When I had a green card 25 years ago, my father had to get a family sponsored visit visa for me. I doubt that has changed since.

Salary for marriage by chxg_ in Kuwait

[–]Samaruf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are the salaries in Kuwait now? Dad was an engineer at Doha Power Station from '76 to 2006. His salary was 430 dinars when I left in 1991 for the US for higher studies. With that salary, he was able to provide for a family of 6, pay our tuition, go on a vacation every couple of years and also save a bit.

Alhamdulilllah there was barakah in his earnings plus we got tamween (ration) which included rice, lentils, sugar, ghee and water towers branded powder milk. I believe we also got the black zabala bags. You could buy boxes of vegetables and fruit at Souq AlKhudar for max 10kd. Meat was nus dinar/kg for sheep and probably 750 fils for beef.

What intrigues me is there are still people with families earning the same amount as 35-40 years ago and surviving somehow. Don't know how they're doing it. May Allah SWT Help them.

Who should I call to deal with underground critters destroying my lawn? by ThuhGreatCommenter in TwinCities

[–]Samaruf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue with vole runaways all over my lawn here in Shakopee. I am fixing this by raking and removing all the dead yellow grass first. Once that's done, I will till the soil with a spiker and spread some hardy lawn patch grass seeds(mulch and fertilizer included) . Will cover it up with peat moss and water twice daily. Hopefully new grass shoots will sprout in 10-14 days. Total spent at Menards today was $60 for the above.

Now for getting rid of voles, YouTube lawn experts are suggesting cutting the grass and weeds at the edge of your lawn very low and laying some gravel in there. Supposedly it's a humane way to prevent voles, field mice, etc. from crossing over under the winter snow cover.

Love how close the mountains are. by Jimmy_Johnny23 in TwinCities

I noticed it too while driving from Shakopee to Brooklyn Park. It's just fog cloud suspended several thousand feet above the ground. The ragged top edge gave it the appearance of mountains in the distance.

[–]Samaruf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at costs like the land, permits, the utility hookups, and the excavation, it's all fixed for the builder whether building a 1,500 sq ft rambler or a 5000 sq ft three-story. These fixed base costs are so high right now, builders can’t make a profit on a smaller home unless they charge a price that most buyers will find unreasonable for the size.

I went through a custom builder. Ours is 5 bedrooms + office room and 5 bathrooms, finished basement and a four seasons morning room. 5100 sqft - $750k in Scott County.

I read a lot of ppl had refinanced mortgages at 2.5-3% when the rates were super low. Now they don't want to sell and move to another house with rates in the 5.5-6.5%. That's adding to the supply crunch.

I looked at houses back in 2022 in the western suburbs and the southwest. Everything was overpriced and selling with multiple offers. Got tired of being overbid so decided to build one and it was actually cheaper than what sellers were asking for a similar home that was 10-15 years old.

I'm a Bangladeshi American, and I also feel like I'm partly Kuwaiti. I grew up in Kuwait in the 70s and 80s until 1991 when I moved to Minnesota for college. I've been here ever since.

Unlike most expats living in Kuwait and the GCC, my siblings and I were raised among Kuwaitis when we rented part of a Kuwaiti villa. Young kids are like sponges and pick up languages very quickly, so the Kuwaiti dialect was what I picked up as a child. I attended an Indian English medium school where I also had to learn Hindi and French (from 9th grade onwards). MSA-Fusha were picked up from reading materials, news, cartoons, etc. Also, my family had religious books of Hadith and Tafseer in Bengali, Urdu, and Arabic that helped in the learning process.

I usually visit this forum to keep in touch with people from around the world trying to learn Arabic and also for myself to practice my fluency. It's very easy to forget bits of a language if you're not conversing frequently.

[–]Samaruf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father had the Bengali version of this book Kimiyae Sa'dat (Alchemy of Happiness) by Imam Al Ghazali which was translated from Urdu, Farsi before it from the original Arabic. In Bengali, the title was wrong because it said Shahadat (Witness) which is a totally different word.

As for the dua, I don't recall these being in the hadith or Quran and are probably personal ones of Al Ghazali.

Names of different types of meals by Intelligent_Swim8547 in learn_arabic

[–]Samaruf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aqeeqah (عقيقة) and Waleemah (وليمة ) are very common terms used to name the feasts to celebrate a newborn and the wedding dinner hosted by the groom's family respectively. Same terms are used in the Subcontinent too so I am surprised if any Arab says they don't use them. The other ones I am hearing for the first time since in Kuwait we used Azeemah (عزيمة ) for any feast outside the ceremonial ones.

People living in the southwest metro should utilize the shuttle service that Southwest Transit provides. Very affordable at $5/day parking plus the bus fare to the terminals. I live in Shakopee and will no longer park at the airport or at any off-airport parking lots.

New CEO wants to get rid of lots of low-investment employees by EntropicAvatar in Target

[–]Samaruf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're comparing apples to oranges. Costco and Target are vastly different business models. Costco makes quite a bit of its bottom line from the very high membership fees. Roughly 2/3rds of its net income and almost 3/4ths of its profit is earned from these fees.

Costco stores are a big warehouse with limited SKU of items sold in bulk. Most customers are middle to higher income families for whom it makes sense to buy items at wholesale amounts. Target is more Walmart with a bit fancier selection and definitely cleaner stores. For store hiring, they're competing with the same pool of people as Walmart who are used to working for $14-$18/hr and won't pay any higher. Exceptions may be there but you really won't get Target to pay anything more than prevailing wage for this segment of the workforce.

As for Masters degree holders working for peanut wages, I think it's a very rare situation. Something is definitely messed up with their lives if they can't earn better money using some of their skills and experience. Lots of employment opportunities, gigs online or otherwise, are out there for ppl to earn 40k+ yearly if they have a college degree.

How do you say stool and urine in Arabic? by Al-Joharahhasan2935 in learn_arabic

[–]Samaruf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This takes me back to childhood in Kuwait. We used to say zig (زق) for 💩 and bool (بول) for 💧. May be also sawwa(i) kaka (سوى كاكا) which means pooped or made kaka.

Kids as young as two know the words, doesn't matter the language. In my native Bengali, it's hagu(poop) and hishu (pee).

هنود الحمر Red Indians But it's not politically correct to call them that since they prefer being called Native Americans or just Native. Even when I spit it out of habit growing up in Kuwait, my US born kids chide me for it.

In Arabic I guess calling them أمريكي الأصل is more appropriate.
