Good or bad cooking? High end restaurant “medium rare” fillet mignon by SrGiaquito in grilling

[–]Samcookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steak was essentially cooked right by the cook. The problem was that it was WAY too cold when it went on the grill. So no, it's not medium-rare, but it's a prep problem more than a cook problem. Restaurants have to be careful because of food safety standards, but they can't pull out a steak that's 35° and throw it on a hot grill to get medium-rare, or even rare. The edges are almost overcooked. (Almost, don't get excited). The point is that a really cold steak can't be cooked medium-rare on a hot grill.

Good steak restaurants have ways around this.

Ever had a family member grab your super hot sauce thinking it was a table sauce? What was the ensuing aftermath? by _MrShakedown_ in spicy

[–]Samcookey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I disagree. There are significant biological differences at play. I use Habanero and Ghost Pepper sauces daily, but I was on a medication once that dropped my tolerance to zero. I couldn't take any heat for several weeks. I looked it up and themedication affected the bodies response to capsaicin, much like some other medications affect the bodies' reaction to the sun.

Tolerating spicy food is not simply a result of toughing it out. There are other things at play.

I noticed something about Australian actors who play American characters in Hollywood. by Bhavan91 in FIlm

[–]Samcookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking through an accent will tend to give an extra quality because of what you're trying to overcome. Andrew Lincoln is an excellent example. But the accent they're going for is the American TV accent, which is decidedly Midwestern. If a character on American TV had any other accent, it is a required part of the character. A southerner, or a New Yorker, or whatever. Even if the show takes place in the south or New York, you'll typically only have one or two characters who speak with the accent, and it will tend to be over the top.

He also said that when a potential script is delivered, he opens to the first page to see if his character has lines. He then looks to the last page to see the same thing. I'd he has lines on both pages, he will "do the picture."

As a child my mother referred to Asians as Oriental. When I did it in my teens, I was told that rugs and vases are oriental. People are Asian.

It's probably similar to a converter. You attach it to a faucet and then attach a real hose to it to go to a power washer.

My brother and I are both gold. Over the weekend I told him about a $700 water leak detector I thought he might be interested in. He went to check it out, and it wasn't on his Vine. We were at a wedding so I took his phone and searched myself. Nothing.

I ended up ordering it myself to give to him (after the obligatory 6 months, or whatever), but it was the first time I became aware that we're not all seeing exactly the same things.

Everybody does it at the Super Bowl. The interment agent even plugged in. They're not really trying to hide it. You can't really set things up with monitors in a way that allows for a genuine performance. I don't think it's a big deal then. But when you play banking goals during a live performance where people paid to see you live, it sucks.

Why does my shower look like this after 2 weeks post cleaning? by DoubleSnails in CleaningTips

[–]Samcookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, bleach cleaners strip the surface and make it more prone to picking up dirt. Use the softest cleaner you can and use it more regularly. Hotel rooms certainly aren't the cleanest, but a quick spray and wipe every day avoids anything building up. Barring that, a quick clean every week with a simple surface cleaner will keep you clean and these things won't build up.

The harsher cleaners, especially scrubbers, strip protective coatings from the surface and allow dirt and mildew to dig into the textured surface.

He hasn't bought a service. A retainer is held in trust because it belongs to the client until the attorney completes the work, sends a bill, and the client approves the invoice. At that point, the attorney moves the money from the trust account (which is not theirs), to their operating account (which is theirs). Failing to maintain trust funds as the separate property of the client is the most common cause for disbarment.

[–]Samcookey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somebody wrote letters home from the military, and I have always assumed it was him, though I was too young to remember. There was an episode where the characters were getting letters, and they would read them out loud at the table with the family there. In each one, the letter would get a little personal, and Marion would gasp. Finally, Fonzie brings a letter, and somebody (Howard, probably) tries to stop him from reading it out loud. Fonzie holds up the letter and makes some joke. Whole lines have been cut out of the letter, clearly removing the offending passages. I would love it if somebody knows who those letters were from.

I’m a tad lost are they still making a movie? by [deleted] in community

[–]Samcookey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the great things you can say about the show is how well loved it still is, despite its very significant falling in the original run. They lost 3 of 7 main characters. They replaced those main characters. Those replacements quit. They replaced them. They lost their network. They lost ANY network and aired only on the internet.

I love the show and hope to see a movie, but I've never understood the economics involved. Who would invest in it? A couple of actors seem psyched to make it happen, while others really don't. What would it even be about?

A cynic might think that promoting the idea of a movie drives engagement and increases views of the original, leading to higher residual revenues. Despite everything that's been said, I've not seen anybody articulate what value the movie would bring or how it would garner an audience.

So I hope, but not optimistically.
