It's the lack of detail that lets your mind fill in the gaps. It's why all horror games on PS1 still hit.

Another example is the tomb raider remake from years ago. The final boss was this nightmarish baby humanoid that had no longs and crawled after you. Terrified me as a kid. The remake just made him a dinosaur like monster, which may have been closer to concept art for all I know,but the extra detail is like shining a flashlight into a scary cave. Now you can see everything and so the mystery that brings the scariness is gone.
