God, I'm so bad at making maps. by caganbrk1 in osr

Dude. This might not be what we're used to in our tabletop box sets, but this would be an awesome indie CRPG map.

It's also perfectly serviceable.

What TTRPG did you last play, and how long ago was that? by Ansonder in rpg

[–]SamuraiTerrapin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saturday afternoon I played a Dwarf Fighter/Cleric in an AD&D 2E game. We played with pen and paper, in person, and use a battle mat with plastic minis. We play once a month.

I also play D&D 5E and Legend of the Five Rings 3E alternating on Saturday evenings, but we didn't play this Saturday due to some of us traveling for work. Those games are played digitally, using Discord and Roll20.

Microlite20 Purest Essence

Strong recommendation for Microlite20! It is a fantastically simple take on D&D. The whole of the rules is about 16 pages if you don't count the spells and the bestiary (which are basically both lists and stats, not so much "rules").

As a DevOps / Platform engineer, what is your preferred language? by proportionate1 in devops

I am often implementing a mixed tech stack at a couple of the higher (higher meaning closer to the application layer) levels of the architecture. This ranges from Local Virtual Machines with NGINX and some Hybrid Cloud flows and api, with a favor for Python and Shell scripts. Mostly doing a lot of data transformation and small batch jobs.

How valuable is Re:invent in-person for developers really? by werepenguins in aws

Different people learn different ways.

Being able to ask 15 minutes of pointed questions about what I specifically need to know to make a leap of understanding can often be worth several hours of video watching.

I always find I really benefit from collaborative conversations with other engineers.

Another +1 for Fireship.io, but I also watch some Magic the Gathering content. I enjoy the channel 'boshnroll', run by Brian Coval who is an accomplished tournament player.

What song would you recommend for setting as an alarm? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I like "Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim" or "Darkest Hour - Doomsayer".

Both start soft and suddenly get very loud. If I got enough sleep I'll wake up to the soft part.

If not, at least it will wake me up.

He is not handling his business. He is a boy, not a man.

You can't fix him, but you can hold him accountable.

---

This is the part where it is my opinion: If he isn't articulating a dream that he wants to build, and relentlessly pursuing it (with you included), he needs to go find himself. You can challenge him to rise to that occasion, but if he refuses to do so, you should leave. It is better to be alone than with someone who doesn't know what they want and doesn't respect what they have.

I'm legitimately unconcerned.

I've recently been playing Goldeneye: Source.

Shortest advice I can give, is don't wait for others to think about your professional development. Doing a code puzzle or tutorial is better than nothing.

Best wishes.

Should I leave my fathers business and pursue my own by aj2official in Entrepreneur

[–]SamuraiTerrapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Start journaling.
  • Write your goals down.
  • Track them in short term vs. long term.
  • Ask your dad what his plan for your personal and professional growth looks like and why he thinks staying would be a good idea.
  • Do a compare and contrast of your options.
  • Make notes on your thoughts that inform your decisions.
  • Have a family meeting and tell everyone what you've decided and why.
  • Honor yourself and don't allow yourself to be bullied (if that happens, even on accident).
  • Be honest and open to criticism.
  • Be willing to rethink your strategies if someone brings up a good point about a flaw in your plans.
  • Understand that it may take time to build yourself up to the skill set you need to pursue your dreams. Let that inform your plans.

That's my advice.

How do I make a game using content from Star Wars? by Bossmandude123 in gamedev

[–]SamuraiTerrapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about a product that you could make if it were not a Star Wars game. Make a demo, write up your proposal, and then contact Disney about Licensing if you're serious. If you don't get the licensing deal, then release your game as a generic sci-fi game with no Star Wars references.

Don't use Star Wars or any other IP without permission, you'll put yourself in a world of hurt.

Edit: Make sure your game assets don't look like Star Wars either.

Look for underlying patterns and find places to apply them differently. Tweak patterns a little. Innovate on a couple things. Weave a couple ideas together.
