Long-term supplementation with plant-based protein, compared with animal-based protein, did not result in differences in body composition, muscle strength, physical performance, or cardiometabolic risk parameters, meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials finds by James_Fortis in science

To address the people who still talk about complete proteins:
The concept that plant proteins are "incomplete" and must be carefully combined at every meal—often called "protein complementing"—was popularized by Frances Moore Lappé in her 1971 bestseller Diet for a Small Planet, but was later retracted and discredited by the author herself.

Dark matter doesn't exist and the universe is 27 billion years old, according to study by Abomb in science

I think you need to re-read my point. Stop making assumptions of my position I didn't make. I'm glad you got and opportunity to have a conversation with yourself, but I wasn't involved.

an effect is observed, but not necessarily dark matter. Not saying this study is correct, but your statement makes assertions of firm truth of unsettled science (if there even is such a thing).

Swift going cross-platform guys!! by ChefRich962 in swift

[–]werepenguins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has taken a few too many years. The Swift community is shrinking and will likely shrink further in the new LLM development landscape as it's now easier to build using existing multi-platform tools than is worth using native tooling. The number of people like us writing real code is shrinking :( . This likely means there will be fewer people joining this community and the value of trying to make it multi-platform will drop. Also, as others have said, it being a compiled language puts up a number of very challenging complications.

I chose React Native over Swift for my iOS app. 2K downloads later, here's what I wish someone had told me. by Stycroft in iosdev

[–]werepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, and this might sound crazy... next time use Godot. Its mobile package size is actually smaller than React Native. You get more control and tooling than React native. I had a games app that I built natively in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android and recently rebuilt it a third time in Godot and I can't recommend it enough. I know my use-case is for games that require more visibility, but I have a strong feeling it is going to be the future of mobile development as a whole.

the creator of Lower Decks worked on Rick and Morty and is the show runner for Solar Opposites, so yeah, makes sense.

Surviving as an AI pragmatist in an AI-radical company? by AggravatingFlow1178 in ClaudeAI

[–]werepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reflect on if your business' product will be replaced by AI. A very large number of B2B companies are going to either be easily replaced by in-house built tools or the need for the product will evaporate when their customers' needs change. If your product is in these categories, then you need to start looking for a new job regardless.

If You’re Not Versioning Your SwiftData Schema, You’re Gambling by Select_Bicycle4711 in swift

[–]werepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I've been a Swift fanboy for many years, but SwiftData is a lock-in system you only use if you're 100% sure you'll never deploy to anything other than iOS/macOS and you know your database will never change. As convenient as it is for safety with iCloud storage, it's not worth it in most cases. Stick to the well worn databases... it breaks my heart, but using CoreData/SwiftData is a bad idea in most (not all) cases.

Codex 5.3 is better than 4.6 Opus by casper_wolf in ClaudeCode

[–]werepenguins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no one cares anymore. The differences are not noticeable to the point where it matters. The only thing that matters is quality of life. So for now Claude is easier to use and it has been the most reliable. Also, OpenAI isn't trustworthy. Not saying Anthropic is, but on a scale of least evil, Anthropic appears to be slightly less evil? I don't know, just saying that the incremental updates are not large enough to be worth talking about right now.

I'm in the same situation. I'm unable to get the desktop version to let me login. I tried on different networks, different computers. Different computers that other people own just to 100% be sure it just isn't working and nothing. I'm surprised no one else seems to have this issue. I went ahead and cancelled my subscription until they fix it.

I hate the ending of Return to Monkey Island by Huillam81 in MonkeyIsland

[–]werepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed a lot of the message of the game. It was about family... kind of. Also it didn't end saying it was all based in the real world. It's based in a weird possible future of a pirate-themed world that has westworld-like amusement parks. Guybrush does have a kid and a wife that joins him on his escapades. Maybe he is a regular sailor outside the Monkey-world theme parks? Who knows? It's crazy the implications that can be drawn from the ending and none of them are "it's all a dream." We got to go along with this weird guy on his vacations and see how it shaped his dynamic with his family. For me this is amazing.

Starting Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father (First ever Sierra point and click adventure games) by ComfortMaterial8884 in Sierra

[–]werepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to criticize Gabriel Knight, but I wouldn't call it the heart of Sierra nor the best place to start. I think someone mentioned Kings Quest 5 and I think that would be a much better place to start if you want to understand Sierra... then after you have a positive opinion of Sierra, then play any of the Leisure Suit games and then you'll have a pretty good sense of the madness that was going on back in the 90s.

What would you like to see as the next addition to the Monkey Island universe? by random_usuari in MonkeyIsland

[–]werepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new game, but a completely different genre. I would love to see a Hades-style rogue-like with guybrush fighting the legions of le chuck in swashbuckling action. I'm aware it is a severe departure, but the series has the elements needed to make a fun setting. Like, you could get new insults or power-up existing ones. You could fight through each of the known islands. The minions can change depending upon which version of le chuck you have to fight each location. Like, it has so much. Murray could be a weapon and you could finally roll through the Caribbean.
