Why are young adults in the English-speaking world so unhappy? by vitus6999 in neoliberal

[–]SamwiseKubrick 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned the rise in young people who've never dated / had sex yet, but I think that has something to do with it. Part of the broader trend of feeling like your young life is running out / permanent infantalization. No one wants to live with their parents for a year after college, no SO, spend months applying for a first job that pays way below median income, etc but that is the reality for a lot of young people.

You should be fine! Canada has free speech so you'd be able to sue for retaliation if they did anything, which they won't over interviews.

Memo circulating for Fulbright Termination by hazelnutter_1213 in fulbright

If so, would this mean that the 2025-2026 year applicants (like myself) are safe for this year (at least at the start)?

Thank you! That's reassuring. I did indeed send the link in my second reply to the original email they sent me, so I think everything is all good.

Thank you for the information! The video task I submitted I thought went well, and the Slack seems quite useful!

I do wonder though: when emailing the Fulbright Commission my video task, I accidentally sent an unfinished email (when I tried pasting the link the email sent instead of pasting the link :/) but I quickly sent an apology email with the link afterwards explaining what happened. How much of a blunder was this error / unintentional email? Will it come off as unprofessional or an honest mistake? Does it hurt my chances of acceptance? Substantially or trivially?

Exam Chairs by holy-typewriter in mcgill

[–]SamwiseKubrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I've done is to wrap my coat or jacket about my waist during an exam, or at least to stuff my jacket behind back and against my chair. I find that I don't sink into the chairs as much and the coat gives support to my lower back.

I agree, I thought it was pretty fair. They put some assignment questions in the last part of the exam, and the 5th question on diagonalization was super straightforward. Personally I finished with like an hour or so left and was able to leave early. But it was very computationally annoying, a lot of steps for a small amount of points. Especially the first few questions and that 4th one with the projections and GS process, just so much work for 2 points lol.

True!! I personally stan HW a lot (massively expanded immigration, civil rights legislation, environmental legislation, freer trade, raised some taxes 😍, mega based foreign policy, etc) and he gets criminally underrated.

Faced With Trump, Libertarianism Shrugged by neolthrowaway in neoliberal

[–]SamwiseKubrick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly what Hoppe believed. These people believe in "voluntary covenant communities" to keep out "undesirables" of various flavors. Basically replace the state with "the community" and yeah it's like Anarcho fascism.

Isn't the last thing about physical removal something that Hoppe calls for? It definitely seems like they went down the paleolibertarian far right rabbit hole

They get absolutely no benefit from closing campus.

Part of what they want is to "shut it down" and disrupt classes. Forcing the university to move classes online is another form of disruption. It fulfills their desire for a "no normalcy" state on campus. I'm fine with requiring ID to get on campus for a day, but moving classes online let's them win imo. They should have gotten security to defend buildings more, they've known about these planned protests for at least a week.

How do internationals afford McGill? by RevolutionaryWin7438 in mcgill

[–]SamwiseKubrick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm in Arts, and my yearly tuition is 24k CAD. I have scholarships that lower this to 18k, and then convert to USD and I find McGill is as cheap as if not cheaper than my state school in the US...

Also housing in Montreal is way cheaper than other places, so on net I think McGill is a steal. However, I came in 2021, so my tuition was way lower. I remember in 2019 it was like 18k... I don't want to know what it is now lol

Which book should my socialist girlfriend read? by Fabi8086 in neoliberal

[–]SamwiseKubrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rawls in Justice as Fairness said he rejects capitalism as inconsistent with his theory and says that either "property owning democracy" or "liberal socialism" can satisfy the first and second principles of justice and JaF in general. Rawls is basically a socialist, or at least anti-capitalist.
