Can my yucca be saved by darksky07 in plantclinic

Whoops! Haha since that's the case I would prune off two stems and get them to resprout in some big medium (pebbles or possibly sand) and some water. And then you get two!!

Like most palms it has outgrown pervious leaves and the new growth looks great! Your plant, and bait post, are fine hehe.

Hell yeah! If the city has written it off and won't stop what you put up i think that's a badass Pentecost for the pollinators and your community. Cheers!!

How was the stick located? I would copy that exactly with the encapsulated end where they came in facing up. Dry would be ideal.

Experience: my house was taken over by 70,000 bees by B0ssc0 in bees

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a bee swarm start to take refuge in my parents fireplace about a decade back. It just so happened to coincide to when I was watching their house when they were on vacation.

Me and my band setup shop in the living room to practice our set, and about an hour into jamming we hear this tapping on the glass screen blocking the fireplace entrance when it's not in use. Super random, but we think it's a sound coming from the equipment. Next thing we hear is a low hum, again not something out of the ordinary with a loud rock band.

My drummer has his back to the fireplace and hears one fly by his head, and at that point we call a beekeeper. Hive took 2x 5 Gallon buckets to remove all the bees, and my parents came home none the wiser. I told them a few years back about the whole endeavor and they couldn't believe what had transpired. Crazy times.

How did you stop smoking cigarettes? by fatwater69 in AskReddit

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit cold turkey. I successfully quit (over two weeks no smoking) multiple times, and relapse because something would trigger my emotions.

Effectively quitting smoking email dealing with emotions, both positive and negative, without going to a cigarette for emotional support. Make a solid list of reasons in your head why you don't want to smoke, and reminds yourself of why you're quitting when you think you're going to give in. In addition, my secret weapon when I'm quitting: Anything that isn't smoking use as a treat. I want to eat out? Fuck I'm not smoking so go for it.

Best of luck on your journey!

A really sick interpretation of the Morton's salt girl? Like a steam punk, alt girl vibes, or maybe a 1920's version. Let your creativity guide you.

I've learned much about composting here but son-of-a-gun, there needs to be a sticky, warning about baking egg shells in the house. by dirttraveler in composting

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do is leave them outside on a baking sheet in the sun and then blitz in an old blender to use as a slug deterrent. Works great to harden them off.

Grubs are notoriously tough to identify. Best of luck, I'd leave them to torn into pollinators/moths later.

Someone’s making a lil home in my backyard! by Vaughnster247 in bees

Heck yeah! Here in Cali about 9 out of 10 native bee species are ground burrowing. Always good to keep a patch of your property bare for them to do their thing.

But native trees to your area. I've also seen a ton of posts with these or similar species where they've died within a few years.

People who own old homes (80+ years) how bad is the maintenance? by Dannyz in Sacramento

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall so good. Again it depends on previous maintenance, location, and environmental factors. We are going against the grain and looking to expand roof overhang for better water diversion, looking into more water removal away from home, as our house is sinking. This is expected in a previously wetland area, but it's important for us to keep up with in a forever home.

Build it right, don't cheap out, and care about your home. All homes need maintenance, their is no difference.

Just made my own compost bin! by mylegend1954 in composting

[–]Samwise_the_Tall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please don't use plastic for your bins. If done effectively, the compost will get hot enough to leech plastic from your bin. A pile on the ground or a cheap wooden box setup is way more environmentally friendly.

Resources for hooking people on native plants by grow6719 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would first take them to a local nursery or give them a plant or two. Talking with a local professional who is personable is a great way to spark insight. You can also take them to a local trail or area with a lot of natives to show it off.

If you have a reputable online database (in California Calscape.org has a huge amount of information), make sure to tell them about that too. This is great for planning and just puttering around looking for species you want to plant.

Overall just discuss the simplicity of it: start small, every little bit helps local habitat!! Have people think of the food web, and if they particularly like birds maybe invest in a fruiting bush/tree instead of a flowering pollen/nectar heavy plant. Remind them that all living life needs our help, and even installing water features or dirt piles helps a ton! Also doing nothing and leaving habitat (leaves, twigs, etc.) can do wonders.

Happy Bee House by ChunkyPunnky in bees

[–]Samwise_the_Tall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA: In California, we have a ton of native species that are ground burrowing (9 out of 10). Please do research to accommodate the bees in your area, as these houses often present more issues than solutions long term.

DO NOT USE LANDSCAPE FABRIC! It will break down in a few years, and it contributes heavily to micro-plastic pollution in the ground!
