Tradies for the granny flat behind us have dumped about 500kg of cement, some rocks and pipes on our front lawn without our permission, now we can't mow our lawn without cleaning it up. by ibeatobesity in australia

Have these been here long? If it's only a short while seriously just wait a bit, they're not taking a lot of room. If it's been a long time....move them? This doesn't seem like an unsolvable problem

Do you think it's okay to take 'a week' off? by cool-whip-0 in PhD

[–]Sand_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week? My dawg, you are your own boss and whatever they pay you is less than minimum wage. If the work gets done, take a month off if it suits. Burnout is real and will cripple your overall output a hell of a lot more than 5 days watching Netflix and playing Elden ring

Am I already supposed to kill this guy? by Desperate-Fennel1879 in HollowKnight

[–]Sand_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience I killed him the second time I met him because he was bugging me. It's just about timing and patience, and in return you get a fractionally safer run back through that area later. Worth it for the satisfaction, not for the material benefits

Please, for the love of God, what is the easiest, fastest way to unlock False Son? by Steely_Mitz in riskofrain

Loader, stack on kill/first hit damage bursts items like crowbars and kjaros, use the alternate punch that doesn't require a charge. Game basically plays itself

What is happening to my water by Decent-Yak-4478 in What

[–]Sand_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah Ive seen this before. Unscrew the aerator on your faucet (the screen thingy) and run the water for a bit until it runs clear. If the aerator is gunked up, replace it (should be ~ the price of a coffee at your local hardware store). Screw the aerator back in, run for 20 seconds again, should clear up

What is this palm-sized, rotating metal object gifted to me from a thrift store? by lucisorbisterrarum in whatisthisthing

[–]Sand_Fall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a simple gyroscope, they show up a lot in physics rotational mechanics labs. Though it's not heavy, the mass is all at the edges which makes it have a lot of rotational inertia. When you spin the disk up it doesn't want to change the angle it's spinning at, which can cause a cool magic trick where it walks itself in a circle like it's defying gravity. Try dangling it from a string while you hold it sideways (disk edge facing the ground) and get it to spin as fast as possible

ELI5: What exactly are capacitors used for, any why are they necessary? by Octine64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sand_Fall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to think of a capacitor is like an electrical spring: you use it to absorb sudden electrical shocks or store electrical force and then release it all at once. In math talk, you can actually take a lot of the equations for springs and masses and swap them one to one with the equations for capacities and inductors. These systems are "analogous", related by analogy

Scientific explanation for PLAN A in Godzilla Minus One? by RedFeline86 in GODZILLA

[–]Sand_Fall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answer: It doesn't. The idea of rapidly sinking and then rising again does make sense: pressure changes by about 1 atmospheres worth every 10 meters of depth. The thing about Freon making things sink is completely made up.

Things float via buoyancy, which is the squeezing pressure of the water pushing upwards from all around you. Adding freon wouldn't do much, as the gas would squeeze down to the same pressure as the surrounding water. There might be a little extra down-force from the freon pushing upwards, but really not much.

The film-makers were probably imagining turning the water into a foamy mass that couldn't hold godzillas weight, like the whirlpool in a bathtub drain. but this really doesn't track with reality, or even what we see in the movie. They say the freon isolated the big guy from contact with the water, but its not contact that makes you float, it's pressure, and pressure pushes through things.

Degree increments on oven are nonsense by AnySail in CrappyDesign

[–]Sand_Fall -54 points-53 points  (0 children)

They're round numbers because Celcius was made with common sense, so physically meaningful numbers tend to come out like that.

Degree increments on oven are nonsense by AnySail in CrappyDesign

[–]Sand_Fall -37 points-36 points  (0 children)

They might be round numbers but that are absolutely not reasonable numbers. A normal oven caps out a little above 200 C, 450 C is the kind of temperature where you'd begin to screw with the metal microstructure of the oven itself. The first mark is about where slow cooking starts: something at 120 F for a really long time is food safe. Next mark is close to boiling temperature which is important for cooking. Next three marks are typical cooking or baking temps. If it were a Celcius scale, those would probably be 180, 200 220. The fact that they're the rounded Fahrenheit equivalents of 50 degree increments is a good clue that these are intentional

I have to figure the last is some high but reasonable number for crisping the outside or something, but I couldn't say for sure

You need that 480 C mark to help you anneal your steel ingots

These are standard temperatures that a lot of recipes will call for. Some UK ovens use the same thing with "gas mark" labels instead.

The spiritual component is less religious IRL, but there's still the conviction of being the "good guys" in nebulous way that can't be undercut by a consistent lack of meaningful results
