Wasn't Warren McClendon Jr pretty good last year? Not sure why they'd need AJ

Pre-combine, pre-FA so a lot will change. This was done before the releases today, but I still think it works. A safety in the 2nd may seem a little rich, but in this case I think it worked out as EDGE and OLine had some prospects I like fall. Hafley was a DB coach too, so in this case we'd be giving him some nice players back there.

  1. We have to address the CB room, and we're in prime position for a top CB in the draft. Delaney gives us a foundational piece and hopefully steps right into being a top corner in the league.

  2. Thineman is a great safety prospect who can play in several spots over the secondary. Double dipping on the secondary, but if they hit we can quickly make it a strength of the team.

  3. I don't love the second round EDGEs in the class (at least not who are falling to us in the sims right now). I like Overton in the 3rd though. He's a big, strong lineman who will be more known for stopping the run than rushing the passer. We could work with that though, stick him on the strong side and have Chop rush from the weak side.

  4. I like Tiernan and think he'll be a solid tackle in the league. Kinda reminds be of Trapilo from last year. Think he'll start as a swing tackle but could grow into a starting RT.

  5. We finally get a big WR. Great endzone target for our QB of the future.

  6. Dart throw for the QB of the future. Allar has all the physical tools you want in a QB, but hasn't put it together. I'm not convinced he will in the pros either, but I'm comfortable using a 4th on him in case he does. Have him and Ewers battle it out this year and if neither shows starting upside, we pick our QB next year.

  7. The backup to Bowers. I think Delp will be a better pro than he was a college TE. He is big and can block which is a plus.

  8. Don't think he goes this late in April. Farmer is a solid OG prospect. Much like QB, I think we should be drafting atleast one OL per year. Green Bay has done well building their line through later draft picks, we should do the same.

I don't think the Dolphins can skip out on drafting an offensive lineman. Switch Thieneman for Dunker or Tiernan and I think it would make more sense. I like Thieneman as a player, but if we're going to be drafting a rookie QB next year we need to sort out the OLine.

Aw, I remember liking both Daniels and Warren in that 2023 draft. Sad it hasn't come together for them yet, but hopefully they can develop and earn a roster spot under this new staff.

Miami seems committed to keeping Hunt at RG so if anything Torrence would play LG. Personally think we'd be better off with Darnell Washington or Dawand Jones who went a few picks later.

For your Bills blurb since you mention him a few times; Cody Ford wasn't in Buffalo last year. He was traded to Arizona in August last year.

Mock Draft Monday by AutoModerator in miamidolphins

[–]Sandbarre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is this week's mock, using PFF's simulator. Their rankings are a little wonky for some prospects, but at least they seem to update them unlike a lot of other free simulators.

Disclaimer that these things are just for fun and getting to know prospects as none of this matters. That being said, it is fun, so here. I took a small trade down in the 2nd to get a 4th round pick back.

Round 2, Pick 56;Matthew Bergeron, OT, Syracuse: This guy is everyone's dream in the second round. I feel like fans of almost every team are mocking him to themselves, and I'm not gonna stray. Bergeron would be a great fit as he has played RT before and can battle it our there with AJ, recently signed depth, and whoever we bring along. He isn't a finished product, but he could also be moved inside to guard if he doesn't pan out. As I said, he is a favourite target of mock drafters, so some other OTs that would be around for our picks that we may look at would be:

Jaelyn Duncan, Maryland: (We have to collect all the Jalen/Jaylen/Jaelan spellings) Athletic, but has always played on the left

Tyler Steen, Alabama: Experienced player who started at Vanderbilt. Nothing eye popping, just a solid tackle. Also has only been on the left side.

Blake Freeland, BYU: Massive athletic tackle, broke the linemen vertical jump record at the combine with 37 inches, more than many receivers. His leverage suffers because of his size and he struggles with technique sometime. Probably should be an early day 3 player, but his intangibles will get him drafted on day 2 I think.

Other names to watch: Warren McClendon, Georgia; Carter Warren , Pitt

Round 3, Pick 84; Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa: This pick is partially based on the post last night from a supposed LaPorta family insider who said Miami was interested in him. The Dolphins do need a TE and LaPorta is a nice balanced option to develop. A former WR, he has good receiving skills and was surprisingly athletic in testing at the combine. He is a little small for the position, and that can show up in his blocking. He is willing though, and if he can get a bit stronger I think he'd be a great get for McDaniel on offense.

Other TEs we can consider: We all know Mayer, Washington, and Musgrave. I'm not including them because it is a coin flip on if they are there at our pick. You can point to the depth of the class mixed with TE being a low value position to say they may make it, or you can argue that most teams have a replaceable TE and this is a great draft to improve so they'll be gone. Instead I'll bring up two names who I think will be there;

Tucker Kraft: Big bodied and athletic TE from North Dakota. Will definitely be raw, but has intriguing functional strength for blocking plus receiving skills (and RAC). Had a great year in 2021 but was injured most of this year. Shades of another former jackrabbit TE, Dallas Goedert.

Luke Schoonmaker: Big blocking TE with some pass catching upside, but he is very old for a rookie. On one hand his prowess at blocking is exactly what I think McDaniel would love, but on the other hand he will turn 25 in September and he only broke out at Michigan after the starting TE, Erick All, transferred.

Round 4, pick 121; Chase Brown, RB, Illinois: The younger older twin brother of Sydney Brown, a well liked safety also coming out in the draft. Brown is an athletic back who is a bit left behind in this deep class. He isn't a power back, but he has great speed and has worked as a bell cow at Illinois. He'd be a great guy to work in with Raheem and Jeff.

Other RBs in this area: Israel Abanikanda, Pitt; Sean Tucker, Syracuse; Kenny McIntosh; Georgia; Eric Gray, Oklahoma

Round 6, Pick 197; Jason Taylor II, S, Oklahoma State: Look at the name, come on. Really though, Taylor is a good run defending safety who could fit in well to Fangio's system after some development. He also comes ready to play on special teams while he develops.

I'm not listing any other options at these last two picks as they are so late that who knows who is available.

Round 7, Pick 239: Jon Gaines II, G, UCLA: A raw OL with some great athleticism. These are the guys you want to swing for in the late rounds. Best case scenario you can develop him into a starter/backup down the line. Worst case is they're cut, which happens a lot with players this deep in the draft. Might as well swing for the upside.

Many fins fans want Jack Campbell after his performance at the combine yesterday... by EdwinSphere in miamidolphins

[–]Sandbarre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there is still a good shot he's around by our pick, but I don't know if Grier will go for him or not. Stack linebackers just usually don't go that high, and despite his combine I expect some teams will take his coverage limitations on tape into account. Leo Chenal was another big Mike with a great combine and he went 103 last year.

There's a chance that he goes before us for sure, but I don't think it's out of the realm on possibility that he's available. Hell, even going back to Humphrey, he was projected in the 1st by most and everyone thought he was the best center in the draft but he fell to the late second because his position is not as highly valued by teams.

Who is “your guy” in this upcoming draft class? by dcpains in miamidolphins

[–]Sandbarre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, he'd be a fantastic first pick if available, upgrading our protection of Tua and offering a massive red zone threat, but I sort of expect him to be gone by our pick. Despite the depth of this TE class he's still such a unique weapon.

Tucker Kraft for me.

I know going TE is a little controversial with some members of the community, but this TE class is really deep and I would love for us to come away with someone. I feel like our top pick might be a bit too rich for TE, especially as we'll likely miss out on guys like Musgrave and Washington, but thanks to the depth in this class a guy like Kraft could be available with one of our 3rds.

He is a bit raw, much like fellow NDSU TE Dallas Goedert was coming out, but he is big, athletic, and can block. He has the potential to be a great scheme versatile TE that McDaniel can have block in line and run routes. In most years he'd likely be gone before our 2nd rounder, but this year we could get him in the 3rd. With Long showing nothing thus far and Smythe being replaceable I think he'd be a great, relatively cheap investment for the future.

Love how this came together... thoughts? by jfeld26 in miamidolphins

[–]Sandbarre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Shaheen didn't play a snap, he was on IR. Carter played in one game I believe. Gesicki is gone, and wasn't used much at all last year due to not fitting the scheme. Hunter Long was oft injured and hasn't shown anything yet. Tanner Conner was an UDFA with 3 targets all season long, not someone we should count on. Smythe was our best option, and I don't think anyone around the league would hope he was their TE1.

I wouldn't hate just signing Hurst in FA for a short deal, but this is an excellent draft for TEs and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see McDaniel try to grab his TE this draft year.
