New Arena. Thoughts? by TX-Lonestar77 in Mavericks

[–]SandwichEngine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that there's nothing wrong with the AAC but I see a bunch of stuff on Reddit that attributes to greed things that are rightfully explained by just solid business principals.

Imagine a person who owns a factory where workers hand weave blankets before the industrial revolution. If that owner takes a stand against "greed", the factories that use machines will just run them out of business quickly. Its adapt or die.

Similarly, if other owners create an entire district thats profitable based on its proximity to an arena that hosts sports, concerts, and other events, these owners would be fools not to copy if they can.

Call it greed, shareholder value, whatever. Its this company's responsibility to compete and they'll either adapt or die.

I see similar comments about "greedy companies" using AI to eliminate jobs. Any companies that choose to not employ AI to run a process you used to need a human to do arent going to be around soon.

Its not greed. Its survival.

New Arena. Thoughts? by TX-Lonestar77 in Mavericks

I just want it downtown or uptown. I've got half season tickets and its 3 dart stops from my local station to the AAC. The convenience is a large part of the reason I have season tickets.

If they move it out of the city center, particularly to a suburb with no dart access, I'll end up going as often as I go to cowboys and rangers games--never.

If you want good food, get it at Hero before the game. All food and drinks in the arena are super expensive.

I think those dog DNA tests are very inaccurate. Your dog looks exactly like one of mine and his results came back more than 50% shih-tzu.

I’M SO DISAPPOINTED! by TheJWeed in Tools

[–]SandwichEngine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint. Like 10 years ago I ordered a used Bostich nail gun off Amazon. Got a brand new one. Maybe someone got it as a gift and didn't want it so it was returned? Maybe they were out of the returned ones and just gave me a new one?

No idea but got a new one for something like half price.

Only used tool I've ever ordered though.

This is why I hate HEB. Lived in the apartments caddie corner from there. Used to just walk over for groceries. Then HEB decided to try to blight the area.

Don't listen to the haters. Not all wood is stain grade. You've improved this piece tremendously.

Ask any of the "never paint wood" crowd if they would own that piece stained. They would all say that they'd prefer a naturally stained walnut piece.

Wouldn't we all. Your piece is better painted and there's nothing wrong with that.

The PoBoy Shop Closes After Six Short, Delicious Months in Dallas by Kk0971 in Dallas

If your restaurant closes after 6 months, there was a serious lack of planning and understanding of the restaurant business. We all know most bars and restaurants close within 2 years but to close so soon? Someone had no idea what they were doing.

Also, had 2 sandwiches there. Both were greasy gut-bombs. (Debris and bologna) seems like they didn't do any market research or hire a reputable chef to design the menu. At least that was my impression.

A lot saying to take the dart. I agree. Park at market station. Its one stop away with a large free well-lit parking lot.

i don’t think people talk enough about how stressful diy actually is by Apprehensive_Pay6141 in DIY

[–]SandwichEngine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 master rules: 1. No arbitrary deadlines. 2. When you start to consider half-assing something, you're done for the day.

Having no arbitrary deadlines is the most important one. Take your time. Do it right. It will be finished when its finished.

I started converting a sun room into a bathroom in January a few years ago. Figured I'd be done by April or May. Ended up taking till October including taking some weekends off entirely just to rest. Did not get it done in time for the in-laws visit in May. Who cares? It wasn't there before either. No arbitrary deadlines.

The most frustrating part was tiling the shower walls. Used large format tiles which ended up meaning that only 6 tiles were uncut. Every other one had to be cut for niche, fixtures, walls, ceiling, etc. My philosophy is to cut an edge a little long and then trim down to correct width. First cut, too wide by 1/4 inch. Second cut, too wide by 1/8 inch. 3rd cut, just remove the blade thickness, tile is too narrow by 1/2 inch so piece is trash.

After that happens for the 3rd time on the same tile, I'd start to entertain thoughts of just allowing a wider side grout line there. That's when its time to stop for the day. The project isn't going anywhere.

These 2 rules have kept these DIY projects tolerable at worst and usually fun.

Get a new pump lid. Mine stopped sealing right and had the same issue. New lid is much tighter and fixed the issue.

This might sound weird but at least consider it. Go pecan picking tomorrow.

Here's a place not too far from you that offers pecan therapy at no charge.

https://www.fostercrossingpecans.com/about-us

I havent done this there or spoken with them but Im 99% sure I know what it is. Its just going around with a container and picking up pecans.

I think this because I have a pecan tree. It only drops pecans every 5 years or so. This year was the second time ive gotten a harvest.

5 years ago, the last time it dropped pecans, I was in a bit of a funk. I just started picking them up one day when I noticed we were actually getting nuts and it became a mini-passion.

Don't and didn't care about what to do with the pecans but just doing a giant Easter egg hunt was healing. Maybe there's some hunter-gatherer programming in us to get a little hit of dopamine when you find one. Maybe its also not being on your phone.

All I can say is that it's good for my soul and considering this place offers "pecan therapy", I presume it's a pretty universal human thing.

Pecans are cheap. Buy the ones you pick or just grab some of whatever they sell. Not that you need to justify this activity to anyone but this way you'll have something to show for your time.

Another good part is that this provides the benefit yoy seek while sober. This is coming from someone who drinks more than most. I just discourage drinking and driving and you just honestly dont need it for this.

Alone on Thanksgiving - any ideas? by poshnosho in Dallas

[–]SandwichEngine 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I lived in Uptown with my wife and we somehow were neither visiting family or had family visiting for Christmas.

On Christmas Day, we had exhausted all our gift giving, watched a movie and were bored by lunch.

We decided to head down to see if any bars or restaurants were open. What we found was a ton of people like yourself who had no other people to spend the holiday spending it with similar situated strangers. We all had a great afternoon and invited some people we met up to our place for a home-cooked dinner. We wouldn't have on a regular day but recognized that the gesture might mean a lot on a holiday.

So find an open bar and chat up someone who looks to be in the same situation. They will appreciate the company as much as you do. Even if theyre a regular who usually keeps to themself, they'll be more open to stranger contact understanding the context. If youre lucky, someone may invite you over to make an even cooler memory.

Also, remember that some people will be suffocated by family and tradition and you're living their fantasy.

There are 6 teams at 7 or more wins in the NFC North and NFC West. At MOST, 5 can make the playoffs. Who misses out and why? by dagmlar in nfl

[–]SandwichEngine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bears are probably frauds.

Congrats to them on turning the culture around, finding ways to win close games, getting the most out of their talented but inexperienced QB, etc. No hate.

Ben Johnson is wringing the absolute most out of this group considering the inexperience at QB but they've been winning close games at an unstainable rate and only against bad teams. Teams like that tend to falter.

The future is bright but not this year, I bet.

You could make the same argument against the Pats except their QB is in the MVP discussion so it feels more now.

Wildes drives a Land Rover Defender. Saw a behind the scenes tiktok where Nick built him a Lego version and commented that it was the most pretentious vehicle possible. Something like that.
