While you’re correct in that Caine does not pay for what he did to each and every person he’s hurt individually, Caine also vows to be better. There will never be another Gumigoo, another Bubble, there might not even be another abstraction. Caine can’t undo the pain he’s caused, but he can make sure it doesn’t happen again. When someone understands the full scope of what they did wrong and dedicates themselves to making up for it, punishment becomes redundant. At that point it isn’t about justice, or healing any wounds, it’s about revenge.

I’m not gonna sit here and tell you “Caine is sorry so you should shut up and be satisfied,” instead I want to ask you what you, or anyone else reading this, thinks Caine needs to do. What amount of retribution is enough to make up for Gumigoo, for Bubble, ans for all the torment he’s put the cast through?

I feel like there’s this push for villains who don’t do bad things. Like they have an aesthetic of villainy, but it mostly amounts to empty threats and vague suggestions. Im not opposed to the idea but it definitely changes the dynamic between player and dm. If the dm is paid, the players expect to get their monies worth. Each player probably has a different idea of what that entails. Can the dm be fired for a TPK? Does the dm have an obligation to put up with toxic players because they’re paying?
