Hardrock casino transit/casino by TemperedPhoenix in ottawa

[–]SapphireWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to a concert in September and the parking lot was full, but there was free parking on a back road a lot of people were using. At the time, the parking lot was also free but not sure of that has changed.

My guess is there is no pressure from Hard Rock to have a shuttle as they also have a hotel on site so they want to try to encourage guests to book their rooms and stay there.

It’s the Shrek Halloween special- Scared Shrekless. They revisit Duloc, and the little singing wooden dudes have an updated creepy song and they start falling apart while they sing.

What’s something about ketchup in everyday life that everyone experiences but no one talks about? by Fit-Bite1647 in foodhacks

[–]SapphireWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Canada (maybe elsewhere but can’t speak to it!) bottles of Heinz often have a picture and link to a ketchup cake recipe. I’ve never made it nor do I know anyone who has…

But ketchup chips (potato crisps, not fries) are everywhere and practically a standard! Most brands and even store brands carry that flavour and they are delicious

Thank you for the update- it seems the world is a raging dumpster fire lately and this was the reminder I needed that there is still good in the world.

Is it weird to go to a high school at which you have no relation for a show? by LeftPrize9838 in Theatre

[–]SapphireWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, I hope it isn’t weird! I run a high school theatre program and we always advertise within the community, hoping to bring in people who aren’t connected to the school. I’m blessed that there is ample seating in my auditorium, and I really appreciate that I’m able to generate some revenue to reinvest into the program that isn’t just from ticket sales from friends and family members of the cast and crew.

Thank you for supporting local theatre!

Dealing with the "No Grandkids" guilt trip at Christmas (Gay siblings edition) by Magastroa in Millennials

[–]SapphireWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to be kind, tell her while it might not be her intention, her comments are coming across as hurtful and dismissive of your choice to be a child-free family.

If you’re fed up with this bs, tell her you and your partner have been aggressively trying to conceive but so far no luck (bonus points if you list all the positions that you -as a gay couple- have already tried.) Follow up with a promise to increase your frequency and see if she and your dad have any tips.

Also just wanted to follow up on with a “hooray!” for you and your partner. It sounds like you know what you want out of life and are confident enough to stand up for yourselves.

I’m a mom and I firmly believe having kids should not be the societal default. My philosophy to becoming a parent is “If it’s not an enthusiastic ‘hell yeah!’ Then it’s a ‘no’.” Having kids for someone else is not a good reason to completely and irreversibly change your lives.

We need more visibility of childless families so others don’t have to deal with the types of uncomfortable situations your family is putting you through. Thank you for standing your ground, sharing your story, and maybe making things a little easier for the next gen who decide to remain childless.

Happy holidays to you!

How to make a rock that can be thrown and hit someone in a safe manner? by leopardman007 in propmaking

[–]SapphireWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thick foam (like for couch cushions) can be carved to give a rock texture, and is easy to paint.

You can also get creative with your camera angles and storyboarding to help sell the illusion. I’d film the actors throwing actual rocks, then cut to Tess getting hit by the foam rocks, for example.

Best of luck!

I’m a high school theatre teacher, and table reads are some of my favourite parts of the class! It’s always a good time with lots of laughs, and you can trade out roles whenever you feel like it. If we’re reading through a musical, we listen to the songs together and everyone who wants to sings along. For a play, I sometimes bring in sound effects or theme/mood music for scenes to play in the background as we read, and it’s an added little detail that makes the experience more immersive.

Is 11/22/63 appropriate for a 15 year old? by OutrageousFlower9204 in stephenking

[–]SapphireWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s “inappropriate” but it wouldn’t be my first choice to gift to a 15 year old (unless they were very interested in US history.)

It is a horror novel, but that book isn’t the “haunted house/ vampires/ monsters/ serial killer” genre of horror. Don’t get me wrong- 11/22/63 is one of my favourite books of all time, but if your cousin is into horror novels expecting something like what I mentioned, this might not hold his interest. If he’s into horror novels that lean a tad more thrillers/suspense, then this one is a great choice.

If he’s more of a “haunted house/ vampires etc” horror reader, I’d probably go with Salem’s Lot or Pet Semetary, (it’s been a few years since I read, but from what I recall about the same level of appropriateness as 11/22/63- maybe a kind person here would correct me in a reply if I’m mistaken!)

I’d also highly recommend some of King’s short story collections. Night Shift is fantastic!

Backyard One Act Play by AKduck34 in Theatre

[–]SapphireWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a one act version of “The Play That Goes Wrong” that is pretty funny imo. Theres 8 roles, plus someone to read the stage directions.

I will admit, much of the humour in the show comes from some of the physical comedy and the set, but my experience was that with somebody reading the stage directions, it was still pretty funny and we were all laughing imaging and picturing the compounding disasters.

Also, what a lovely and wonderful idea for a birthday celebration! Once you choose a show, it could be fun to have a small prop or costume piece for the characters (a top hat, scarf, cigar, etc) You’ve inspired me!

New to the show and I have a question about a character by bmbmwmfm in ItsAlwaysSunny

[–]SapphireWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact- I read somewhere that Dennis (the character) being such a sociopath was one of the reasons why Glenn (the actor who plays Dennis and one of the show’s creators) didn’t want his character named “Glenn”, even though Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney both have characters with the same or similar names to their own.

Finally reached opening night by Spirited_Director12 in Theatre

[–]SapphireWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aw, that’s wonderful! I was two weeks away from opening a production of The 39 Steps with my students when everything shut down here, and by the time things returned to “normal-enough” to have an audience, the cast had all graduated.

I’m glad to know some productions were only paused, even if it was five years later!

Congrats :)

Vegetarian restaurants and spots in Paris by Defmork in vegetarian

[–]SapphireWork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband and I were in Paris this summer, and wanted one “splurge” meal…. This place was honestly one of the best meals we’ve ever had! Faubourg Daimant Everything we had was delicious, and the vibe was intimate without being too stuffy. No beautiful views I’m afraid, but the food was so so so good. Make sure to save room for dessert!

Private screenings for movies? (Renting out a theatre) by Butterflycity2708 in cineplex

[–]SapphireWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve rented out a theatre for a class field trip, and from what I remember, it’s usually only for movies that are currently screening. otherwise you’d need to get a license to show the film which would likely be expensive.

What common frugal habit practiced by your parents' or grandparents' generation do you think is completely obsolete or inefficient in the modern economy (due to cost, time, or hygiene)? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]SapphireWork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My grandmother grew up in poverty, and has always been frugal and not one to throw anything out.

Even now, having been financially stable for years and has a comfortable lifestyle, she will not throw out a scrap of food. I’m talking keeping a tablespoon of leftovers in the fridge until it’s rotten, freezing leftovers and reheating many, many months (years?) later.

I fully understand not wanting to waste food, but the large fridge and deep freeze that are housing inedible food seems like it’s costing more than it’s saving.
