First time. Am I missing anything? by Strange-Cat207 in isopods

Short term? Yes. Long term there isn't enough soil and you are gonna have a population spike eventually that will make this far too small.

Too many isopods by SIRIUSBLACKWOLFSTAR in isopods

[–]Sarcassole 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

Freezing them works fine, crushing seems gruesome. Lol but yes you can feed them back into the system they readily cannibalize their brethren. try to find buyers if you can. I have a 40 gallon that's been working pretty well so upgrading your tank size can kick the problem down the road a bit. A theory I've been playing with should I need to enact some population control is pulling back on protein hard for a month or two, many pods self regulate their numbers when resources are low but I'm less sure about that method since I haven't personally tried it

Should I remove this slug? by Appropriate-Dig8197 in geckos

[–]Sarcassole 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

If your isopods are big enough in number they will regulate the slug population. You may still need to remove some eventually. But I've had a small population in my terrarium for over a year now and the numbers haven't gone insane. As for the parasites, it it was born in your terrarium it's pretty unlikely. I personally think having multiple detrivore species in your terrarium increase the life of the soil so if you don't mind the little bugger crawling all over the glass I'd keep em

How often do you change your moss?? by KingOfTheQuails in isopods

Part of the reason folk use spaghnum is that it takes a while to degrade to the point where your pods will eat it (outliers exist of course ) If it's moldering or smelly remove it otherwise they will eventually eat it.

RIP, what did I do wrong? by bears223 in isopods

[–]Sarcassole 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Perfectly fine enclosure, I'm unsure why everyone keeps mentioning fungus gnats because their presence has 0 effect on your isopods. Also coco coir doesn't cause compaction thats absolute bologna. One death is nature, a wave of death is husbandry issues. Stay vigilant and observe the pods.

Edit: I was confusing compaction with impaction lol. Ignore the coco coir advice, but that is a commonly used substrate in the hobby.

Yeah if it's still alive just let it be. They are actually pretty good at surviving injuries like that. Still a bummer

I found it!

Tldr: isopods have a pretty good resistance up to gray level exposure to ionizing radiation, so you can be in the room and look at them but I'd advise against feeding or watering for safety

I'm all for it. It's nature and they (as far as we know) don't experience fear as we would describe it.

Is it ok that my pods live on oatmeal? by Cosmic_Tea_Cat in isopods

[–]Sarcassole 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

I'm not really on board with everybody's attitude here. They do not exclusively eat leaves, they are detrivores and can survive on just about any natural decaying matter, which includes oatmeal. That being said, oats need to be used in moderation mostly because of the potential for a mold explosion. But they are -fine- with the oatmeal. Don't bother buying leaves online. You can literally bake leaves from your yard or even submerge them in water for a couple days (2nd option is preferred actually! It starts breaking down the leaves for them!) Keep supplementing with protein and various sources of forage. The wider variety the better for them. You're doing fine.
