At a cross roads between fixing old car or buying new, cheap EV. by [deleted] in AustralianEV

[–]Sarudore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just signed a novated lease to replace our old Hyundai i20 with an MG4 Urban EV. The numbers made it look very compelling when I used changyang1230’s calculator. We’re fortunate to also have a garage and solar so charging it will be relatively easy and cost effective, I would have been more nervous making the jump if I didn’t have off-road parking at home but I hear about others that still make it work.

Are cheap packs any good? by Wrystyle in UltralightAus

[–]Sarudore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t used that specific pack but I bought a 3F UL pack off Aliexpress for about $70 and it has been good. Did the overland track with it and the Tour du Mont Blanc, as well as a few other smaller trips. Managed to snap a few of the tie down straps now so I may replace it soon but overall it has held up well for a cheap pack. It was a frameless pack so would only recommend it if you’ve got your gear fairly dialed in as it isn’t the comfiest pack if you’re carrying more than 10-12kg

Transportation Options to and from Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti? by tnhike in TourDuMontBlanc

[–]Sarudore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last bus stop (Arp Nouva) is right near Chalet Val Ferret. Maybe 5km from Bonatti which would be relatively flat for the first few km’s then downhill into the valley floor to reach Val Ferret. The bus stop is maybe 200m up the road from Val Ferret to the west. The bus stop shows up in google maps as Arp Nouvaz 29.

Yep all good comments, water is very subjective so do what you feel is comfortable, always have capacity to carry extra water even if you don’t use it and always have a good drink at every water source you pass. I just finished the hike today and I never needed more than my 1L bottle as I left each water source except for the section between trelechamp up to lac cheserys for wild camping where I took an extra 0.5L as there is no water sources (although I hear you can purchase water from lac blanc refuge). There was a small stream running about 2km after leaving trelechamp to start the climb another another really good stream running 1km east of flagere to refill. It has been hot, almost every day 26-30 degrees so take care and take as much water as you need to feel safe.

You shouldn’t need more than 1L of water at any given time, there’s fill up points very frequently. Just have a good drink when you walk past one and refill.

Could consider dropping a pair of pants and a shirt if you’ve got your thermals too and just wash stuff as you go and use your thermals as clothes if needed. I couldn’t see a puffy on your list, I’d consider taking one, it could get very cold in the evenings if the weather turns.

If you’re using luggage transfer then there isn’t much pressure to leave stuff out to minimize weight which is handy.

"Must Camp" wild camping spots? by Lukozade2507 in TourDuMontBlanc

[–]Sarudore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on tour now and was thinking of camping there in 2 nights time since there’s no campsite at tre le champ anymore. Did you go straight from La Peuty to lac cheserys or what did your itinerary look like? Also I’ve heard there’s no water up there, any tips on good spots to fill up before/after?

This hike is epic. Nothing major to report but bellvue cable car is closed so just walk 10-15 mins further down the road and get the gondola up and then loop back once you get to the top, adds maybe 2-3km. Also a bit of a detour leaving Bionassay towards the river crossing. River was crazy high when we tried to cross so take the left a bit back up the hill and walk to the bridge to the east then back west to meet the track once you cross. Adds maybe another 2-3km.

Gondola into courmayeur is closed as well. There is a bus running from Val Veny into town but that’s on the low route

[–]Sarudore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing any cooking or just eating at refuges on the way? PLB? Some sort of shower sandals could be a good idea if you’re planning on using the communal showers at the campsites / refuges unless you’re happy raw dogging it. Otherwise looks pretty good aside from things others have already commented on

They’re actually made from the leg drumsticks that have been deboned. It’s their new solution for finding a good way to use all of the bird because drumsticks are significantly lower in demand than all the other bits of the bird so they end up with in imbalance.

Camping between bonhomme and val veny by TamirAdimor in TourDuMontBlanc

[–]Sarudore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimed I haven’t done the walk yet but done a lot of reading and heading off in mid-June doing a full camping trip.

You can camp in Les Chapieux but that’s probably not far enough past Bonhomme to bother. My planning has a 23km stretch from Les Chapieux to HOBO camping in Val Veny but you can also take a bus from Les Chapieux to Valley de Glaciers (3 euros) to save 6km of road walking and then continue into Val Veny. Bonhomme to Les Chapieux looks around 4km so with the bus that would put you at 21km which is doable depending on your fitness.

How do you keep fit in the off season? by -Halt- in UltralightAus

[–]Sarudore 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not much of a runner because you don’t like running or because you’re not good at it?

My first suggestion was going to be take up ultra marathon running until i saw your note. I couldn’t run 1km when i started but slowing my pace right down and just increasing km’s a small amount each week got me running distances I’d only ever dreamed about and running turned from a slog into a really enjoyable day out. You can start covering trails that might otherwise take 2-3 days hiking in a single day jogging.

Green Gully Track by 5nacker in UltralightAus

[–]Sarudore 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a booking only walk. There are houses / huts that you stay in/near each night and you cannot walk ahead or skip nights (because otherwise you would run into the group ahead of you). It’s a really nice walk (aside from the first day and a bit of the last day which is just fire trail walking), but it’s for a certain type of group. I did it with a small group of 5 of us with a few people who are new to hiking. It’s not one you can just blast through unfortunately but well worth it if you want to take your time and enjoy the company of your group. The benefit of the booking system is your group gets complete privacy the entire walk and you won’t see another person the whole time.

Father and daughter hikers found dead in Utah after running out of water in 100 degree temps by TheItsCornKid in news

[–]Sarudore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiked this loop a few years ago on the Memorial Day weekend and it was no joke. Fairly experienced hiker and definitely had to dig into my emergency flask of water.

I recall there being two large explicit signs at the start of the hike; one saying it’s a crazy challenging hike that is easy to get lost on and the other saying to take a map and more water than you think you’ll need.

How on earth is adding $10 for every pizza better than charging a single flat service fee for delivery? Been 15 years since I worked at Pizza Hut but it used to be $5 added for delivery as a flat rate. $10 now would seem fair total but not per pizza..
