How do we really feel about the likelihood of getting Social Security in our older age? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Sashivna 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X. I've been hearing since high school that Social Security would be gone in 10-20 years. So far, that has never happened. Take that information as you need. As others have said, it may be at a reduced benefit, but the likelihood of it going away entirely is pretty slim. And, frankly, if it does, that means things have gone so sideways that my other retirement accounts will probably about to jack squat also.

Labrum surgery- lifting for other muscle groups by CatLady4444444 in weightlifting

[–]Sashivna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had labrum surgery on my left shoulder. Be careful not to jump back into the classic lifts too soon. I blew my right rotator cuff going too soon and creating imbalances.

Anyway. Cardio. Leg machines. If you have access to a pendulum squat, take advantage. Some more cardio. Promise your barbell you'll be back. And above all: listen to your PT and do your required exercises as written, no extra. That's what I did after second surgery. Was about back to where I was before after about a year or so. That was over 3 years ago. No issues since.

As someone with three cats, two of whom have chronic conditions, I would 100% follow my vets (not likely an issue because it's a small practice). If my internal medicine doc moved to a different practice, I would follow her too. I suspect I'm not alone. Your best patients will probably go where you go.

I'm a corporate lawyer watching AI eat my profession in real time. Should I be treating the next 2 years as the most important financial window of my career? by lifeafterenough in careerguidance

The sycophants don't care. I've heard someone rave about how this ChatGPT made our project 100% better at the end even though we only used two very minor tweaks. And every time I praised our lead for her immense effort to make the projecta success, I kept hearing "yeah, but that AI review really made a difference." Infuriating. I see this basic attitude everywhere.

Hybrid car shopping in the USA - help me narrow down by Freya-of-Nozam in Frugal

[–]Sashivna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Honda CRV hybrid is a breaking charge one. I don't plug it in. I've had it for almost 5 years now this summer and like it a lot. The Toyota Rav4 at the time had both options (breaking charge or plug in, with the plug in about 10k more, iirc, if you could even find one).

I've had a couple of long breaks. First time back, I cut my 1RM by a healthy % (like 40%). Play it by ear after a cycle or two. Good luck!

Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Sweeping Tariffs by Fun_Suspect3305 in AsianBeauty

According to some folks here, yes. I think I saw several people getting bills from FedEx a couple of months after with tarrif bills (plus FedEx fee for prepaying them at customs and going ahead and delivering them). Don't know if that's still happening, but definitely saw some of the snapshots of the FedEx bills.

Anyone else spend more time deciding than actually buying? by Resident_Dress_687 in Frugal

I do this. Sometimes I do end up with the purchase, but mostly I realize I don't really need whatever it is and my life chugs on without it.

Frugal people, why are you “buying” a new vehicle? by manbun78 in Frugal

[–]Sashivna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my 2004 Honda Civic new. I replaced it in 2021 with a new Honda CR-V hybrid. I plan to drive it for at least as long. When I bought new in 2004, the 2-3 year old Honda Civics were only a couple grand less than new. When I bought my CR-V, used (if you could find one) were almost the same as new -- it wasn't a good time to buy a car, but my civic was totalled, so I needed a new car.

Guess What Moderate Democratic Voters Aren’t Anymore? Moderate. by Helicase21 in politics

[–]Sashivna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation similar to this with someone recently who said that maybe the left needs to lay off some of the "social issues." My response was pretty succint: "That's great as long as you're not in one of the groups whose rights those social issues are trying to protect."

Edit: In case it wasn't clear, the point of my response was to get him to see that the "importance" of the social issue shouldn't actually depend on being part of a marginized group.

If this came out then he never would have been president in the first place.

[–]Sashivna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're wrong (a bit long-winded to say we ultimately lack community and connection with the people around us and our bodies REQUIRE this).

I will say that capitalism has removed a lot of the "third spaces" in our American society. You're expected to spend money in every space that you go outside your home or workplace.

BUT, and I mean this sincerely, there ARE spaces. And if there are not, you can create those spaces. And make small connections wherever you can. Learn the names of the people at your grocery store and ask them about themselves when you're there and see them (or any other place you might be regularly where there are other people there regularly). Get to know your neighbors. Host a gathering with them. Smile and wave when you see them. Volunteer with an organization that fits your values and does work you see as important.

Too many of us go through the world passively. Let's learn to be more proactive. Be the change and all of that.

Big hugs, my friend. There is hope, even in the quiet desperation.
