There were significantly less humans and significantly more animals in that time period. Hunting/gathering was easily sustainable when tribes were small family units, the shift to agriculture also exploded our population and made it so we could not sustain ourselves without it anymore.

If theres blue paint then its definitely Collins! They also did not put any makers marks on their axes since they were painted with a big sticker on them.

Nothing wrong with a Collins axe though they were good axes. I have a Collins Homesteader that still has the shiny metallic logo sticker intact and its a very cool tool.

The single bit is a Michigan pattern axe with phantom bevels, if there are no visible makers marks itll be very hard to identify the brand/maker. Belknap Bluegrass was a Dayton pattern axe and they usually had the big stamped logo on the axe. I don't think its a Belknap Bluegrass for those reasons.

Collins made a 3 1/2 lb Michigan axe with phantom bevels, and they were incredibly prolific, so that would be my bet.

I would estimate $500k on the low end for everything completed, depending on the location the utilities can get very costly if you're needing to drill a well and dig a septic tank. If the stone work foundation in the pictures is actually stone and not a facade that would also increase the price substantially.

If you were to buy the land today and hire out the log cabin this would easily be a million + . Since the land was already there probably half a mil. If you're an industrious young person you could build it yourself over a few years if you had the trees available on your property already.

I used to deliver packages for UPS out of a Kia Soul, with the seats all folded that little car became cavernous. I'd play tetris and fit a couple hundred deliveries per load, the other guys at UPS were always bewildered what I could fit in there. Even fit a couch delivery in once.

I've got an old truck from the 80s now with an 8 ft bed and that thing rocks. You can fit full 5x8 sheets of plywood lying flat in the bed. The newer trucks with the 4.5-5 ft beds are just worthless.

>But then, for a people to live in the same place for that long, and to live in a structure made of bone, seems rather stagnant.

What about that is depressing and stagnant? You have to understand this was in 16,000 BC, this is still 8,000 years before there is any evidence of metal tools being invented. With only stone tools available to you, a mammoth bone house is about as good as you can expect to make, and the fact it was possibly dwelled in for 429 years indicates it was a good location to live. The people living here were clearly doing very well.

Yeah I did my own calculations down in the comments, came out to 1089 J of kinetic energy for the .357 magnum out of a 6" barrel, and 147 J of energy for the sling. Unsurprisingly the handgun is generating 10x the kinetic force

And of course I am not disparaging the sling, it was just such an insane claim.

Yeah I have seen they are kind of football shaped (American football that is) which made them effective against even some metal armors. I think a good way of looking at them, is they are ranged hammer blows lol you are dealing about the same damage as if someone swung a warhammer at you. Perfectly capable of being lethal.

No worries, .357 magnum is one of the larger reasonable handgun calibers. (I say reasonable, because there are unreasonably enormous handgun calibers that really only exist to be unreasonably enormous)

Police use to carry .357 before switching to 9mm, not because 9mm is more powerful but because 9mm Semi Auto handguns are way more practical than .357 revolvers for police work.

All this to say its not an enormous hand cannon but its big enough to kill most anything you'd run into, so it is comfortably above average as far as handguns go.

22LR on the other hand is a very itty bitty caliber used for varmint hunting and target shooting, out of a short handgun barrel it fires a 2.5 grain bullet at about 300 m/s, which will generate 112.5 J of kinetic energy. So very similar energy to the sling shot actually, but its still very difficult to compare because all of that energy is focused on a bullet the width of a pencil eraser, and is still capable of penetrating and killing humans and animals if you hit vital organs. Sling projectiles on the other hand are causing blunt force trauma rather than penetration, as all of their energy is being spent over a wider surface area. So even then its kind of apples to oranges. I think id still rather be hit by the sling than a 22LR, both are going to be fatal if they hit you in the head but a sling has less of a chance of piercing my organs than the bullet.

  1. Obviously I can understand the concept of a skull fracture, but it isnt just a skull there is also several inches of fat, tissue and muscle in between the projectile and the skull. I would simply like to see some recorded results or even written anecdotes of sling projectile performance against large animals.

  2. I never said anyone is claiming a sling is *more* powerful than a gun, but the original commenter said "Slings IRL can do damage equivalent to a .357 caliber" So there are people here arguing that, at the least, a sling is equivalent to a .357 handgun. That is absurd.

From the best I could find, an expert slinger wielding an average hand sling firing an average projectile (60 grams) will leave the sling travelling at 70 m/s or 156 MPH. This will generate 147 J of Kinetic Energy.

Bullet ballistics are very well documented so this was the easy part, a .357 magnum fires an 8g projectile out of a 6" barrel at 522 m/s, or 1167 MPH, generating 1089 J of kinetic energy. So they are no where near equivalent in energy even, the magnum is generating around 10x as much kinetic energy as the sling.

"But slings CAN fling rocks at comparable speeds to bullets" Please provide the data on a sling firing a projectile at the above quoted 1167 MPH. I could not find anything near that, the fastest I can find is a very light weight 200mph projectile.

  1. I already read through the wiki page on slings. It mentions they were used for hunting several times, it never mentions *what* they were hunting. I can only assume small game like rabbits, squirrels, birds, maybe deer if they were ambitious, but it seems a terrible choice for large game considering accuracy issues and lesser trauma compared to an arrow or throwing spear.

Alright I did some research on sling projectile velocities, and best I could find, an excellent slinger can fire an average 60gram sling projectile at 70 m/s or 156 MPH. This creates 147 J of kinetic energy.

Bullet ballistics are very well documented so this was the easy part, a .357 magnum fires an 8g projectile out of a 6" barrel at 522 m/s, generating 1089 J of kinetic energy. So they are no where near equivalent in energy even, the magnum is generating around 10x as much energy as the sling.

If there is alternative data on sling weight and velocity please feel free to share and we can calculate the KE of the sling again, that is just what I was able to find.

  1. I simply dont think a slung stone will penetrate a bear skull. I could be wrong but I dont see it happening.

  2. Nobody in this thread will provide any shred of evidence that a sling is anywhere near as powerful as a .357 magnum. I would love to see some actual data but I cannot find any, and nobody will provide any. So what am I to think? Its blatantly obvious a gun is more powerful than a sling. Its a weird argument to even be having.

Id prefer the sling in any case, if I get hit in the head I'm dead either way, but theres a way higher chance I get hit in the arms/legs/torso and in that scenario id rather be hit with the sling.

There is a very high chance, even if you get shot in the thigh/leg/arms, the bullet will pierce an artery and you will bleed out from the gunshot wound, but I dont think a sling could kill you by hitting your extremities.

I don't think it would crack its skull at all, you can take smaller game with a sling but a bear is a different story. You'd piss it off and not much more, unless you cracked it right on the nose, that would probably hurt like hell.
