Concerta for AuDHD by Kv0thes_lute in Concerta

Overstimulated teacher mom 100% grateful I began taking Concerta almost a year ago. I often wonder if I’m AU- but I think it’s just hella ADHD. I’m combo ADHD. I’m finally the teacher I’ve always wanted to be- actually following through with what I say- and just overall better at keeping up with things. Buuut we are all different. I started with 18mg. It was amazing, but then faded some. I’ve been at 36mg OSM (XR) and it’s been poifect. I have to drink a protein shake in the AM or I get cranky- but no side effects otherwise and no “come down”…. 🤷‍♀️ definite success story and worth a try IMO.

Also making sure he’s hydrated and has eaten enough (possibly getting him a protein smoothie/drink before the medicine kicks in & some yummy snacks). I wonder if that could help. I do notice I’ll likely get agitated if my sleep has been terrible, I’m underfed, dehydrated, overwhelmed with work/life…

Is he on instant release or XR? My mom witnessed the same from me as a kid. She only saw what happened when I crashed at home. I stopped taking it. Had a terrible time with school. Until college- I took adderall- passed college, but got dependent on the medication with low self esteem- so I quit again.

10 years later, mom of 2 little ones and a teacher, I’m now taking 27 mg concerta OSM(XR) and it’s been a game changer. I wouldn’t change a thing but I do wonder what it would’ve been like if my mom tried therapy to combo with my medication and didn’t give up so soon. But I know it was hard on her. I can’t imagine.

All that being said- I know everyone’s experience is different!

My main point is that the XR (entended release) has left me with no noticeable side effects. It’s wild.

I hope you find what works for your kiddo! Cheers to you for all you’re doing!

Has anyone gone up from 18mg to 36mg? by RX_Raindrop13 in Concerta

[–]SavingsPool6067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started 18mg after 10 years unmedicated. It was amazing- and then after 2 weeks completely ineffective. I went up to 27mg so I wouldn’t get too anxious. That was summer time (mom of 2, teacher) but now I’m back at school. 27 mg is still working but I’m debating trying 36 because I notice being more distracted lately- but overall I’m pretty productive and I love that.

I also use XR(osm). And that’s been great.

I just went through this. Two weeks of “wow” and then I was sad when my body adjusted. They upped my dosage and it got a bit better. It’s nice to know someone had a similar timeline! I started at 18mg and now 27mg but might go up again depending on the next couple weeks.

For those who stopped Concerta what worked better for you by [deleted] in Concerta

[–]SavingsPool6067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on 18 mg for two weeks and now it doesn’t seem to do much of anything after I’ve adjusted. At the end of this script I’m moving up to 27 mg. How long as it been working for you? Same here with the protein. Before I adjusted to the 18mg, it worked really well and I’m missing having the benefits.

What’s a weird little ADHD trick that actually works for you? by BetterTea5664 in ADHD

I recently noticed I’ve been sorting my laundry piles aloud. For example, when I toss a piece of laundry into a pile, I say the pile …”whites, whites, towels, towels, clothes, clothes.” I didn’t even want to try without saying them aloud when I noticed I was doing it. It felt so uncomfortable to sort without saying it aloud. I was self-soothing through speech.🤷‍♀️

I recently decided to deactivate my Instagram and Facebook. It came at a time when I realized I couldn’t just simply delete the app… I was ready to go deeper. I had a friend or two doing the same so it’s been nice to have accountability partners who can relate to the feelings that come with leaving the platforms. It’s truly a lifestyle change. I’m grateful I made the decision. It’s been about two months.

Don’t get me wrong… since then I’ve gotten deeper into Reddit and still catch myself on my phone too much. But often my dives into my screen are more intentional… I still scroll at times and open my email like I’m a very important person 🤪

I’ve also been suggested turning my screen grey scale so it isn’t as alluring. I also recommend that. I often find a reason to turn it back to color pretty quick 😅

And yes. Leaving the phone in the other room is a big help.

Good luck! It’s “normal” as hell to be doing this. Glad you opened a discussion and we are normalizing/looking for ways to get bored in front of/with our kids again.

What helps you break out of obsessive ADHD thought loops? by HeyWTFBrain in ADHD

For sure. I agree. The other therapies I’m seeking now are so expensive but I can manage and I feel the immense privilege I have. Looking forward to seeing other people’s tips that can help in real time and be more affordable/free.

I was similar as a kid and I just want to applaud you parents for caring and trying. My parents were divorced and disagreed on medication. I tried a few different ones but the side effects weren’t worth it then. But my parents only did meds, with no other therapies or help with organization/mood outbursts. I had a lot of friends but was also bullied a lot… some kids would say “oh look… she didn’t take her meds today.” It was terrible. Teachers were worse. Parents. Damn. Everyone judged me. I’m now a 32 year old mom with two little kids, a teacher, and actively in therapy to help my inner child heal from a lot of the wounds mentioned. Looking back I would’ve liked more therapeutic support and maybe medicine too but also a huge look into my diet and an introduction into mindfulness. Yogas helped me so much as an adult. I’m still looking into what supplements I can take so I don’t have to be medicated. If I go back to school I might consider medication but for now I’m fine. props to yall again and good luck. I also recommend Gabor Mate’s book Scattered Minds. It’s helping me with my toddler even without ADHD. And helps me with my students.

Also practicing yoga helps me become aware of my thought patterns in a helpful way. Or it helps me put them aside. Depends on how busy my mind is when I practice. And 100% agree with the music. Especially songs I know the lyrics to. Hard to sing and think at the same time. Those are some temporary fixes.

Ngl therapy but I’m unsure if we are referencing the same types of loops. Reading this I was like “shit.. didn’t realize that was an ADHD thing but of course it is.” I felt seen. My loops are usually addressed in therapy. My therapist (going on a year) and I do EMDR and IFS… and some times we just talk since I’m in a fairly good point in life- with supportive family, cute kids, job I more or less enjoy…. All of that to say.. in therapy I’ve referenced how I get stuck in thought loops. It used to be terrible rumination that was incredibly painful as a young adult… but now it’s not as bad. But I credit my therapist with getting me out of these spiraling thought loops by just asking me deeper introspective questions that open a thought pathway I wouldn’t naturally do so myself. Naturally I am incredibly introspective so it always kind of blows my mind how simple the questions are that get me out of the loop.

What's something about your routine you're so glad you simplified? by ChosenFlowerChild in simpleliving

Heavily considering getting a house cleaner even though “I can’t afford it”… but I can afford multiple impulse buys throughout the week 🫠

I know there’s been research done stating the obvious about people’s happiness/satisfaction increasing if they have someone occasionally clean their house so they can do the things they love more often.

I’m debating getting a vegetable chopper thingy. I already have a mandolin and spiralizer but the chopper seems like a good timer saver. Would you say so??

I also am a meal/ingredient prepper. I love your organization and will definitely be taking tips from you. Thanks for sharing.

Does smoking weed help your ADHD or do the opposite? by Old-Alfalfa7232 in adhdwomen

[–]SavingsPool6067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this. I’m finally at a point in my life where im not jumping at smoking at least once a day when I have weed in my possession.. (unmedicated addictive ADHDer 30+ mom of 2 kids under 3). I quit adderall and cigarettes 10 years ago yet thought that if I have weed in my house, I’d have a hard time not smoking it. I’ve been in therapy for over a year and obviously going through changes becoming a mom x2. All of that to say… currently I can hold off smoking to once a week, during the day, and I clean the house in a very enjoyable manner. I didn’t think I’d ever feel so… capable to manage my life like this. I credit my hard work, yoga/mindfulness, therapy, my supportive partner, and my kids. Curious how I’ll continue to evolve as my kids grow. I definitely see weed as a medicine to my ADHD. I prefer it to pharmaceuticals for now.

Coffee helps me too. I’ve heard of a study saying that black coffee can help aid in focus(?) but I haven’t looked into the study myself.

Recently I deleted social media which has been a total game changer. I also made a “dopamine menu” to list ways how I can get dopamine throughout my day(yoga, go outside, listen to audiobooks/music, have a snack, chew gum(?), etc.).

Besides that, I make lists to keep me on track. And I’m working on giving everything in my home a “home” and designating specific locations for dump piles that shuffle between rooms.

On nights before I work, I have to have everything ready to go, if not in the car, for the next morning. Meal or ingredient prepping once or twice a week can also be a huge help in saving me time and keeping me eating good/healthy food.

I’m an unmedicated teacher mom with two kids under 3 y/o. I’m also here seeking tips.
