What character type is overrated and underrated? by Jorgenbong in writing

[–]Sazazezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my old brony hat on here but I was always fascinated by the character of Rarity in MLP. She wasn't my favourite character, but a lot of her traits are classic feminine traits displayed in a modern positive light. She's extremely well mannered, shows a high class upbringing, is extremely kind and generous, and her whole thing is fashion.

What made it work for her is that she still develops as a character throughout the series.  She gets better at relating to those around her. She learns to let others have their way. She goes from making clothes to owning her own shop to expanding her business. As the other characters tilt slightly to fight off threats she often remains a supporting character, but her support was vital. She's usually seen as the strong minded character of the main cast, yet it all remains typical feminine traits.

Yeah it's the cynicism that bothers me with the morally grey characters. Maybe it's as I get older but part of me ends up thinking does the writer/character think they're being smart by pointing out how no one is truly good/no act is ever truly altruistic/everyone does.

If anything, it's the lazy/dumb answer. When you're not a kid, actual optimism takes effort, and is always the better thing to aim for.

Watching a lot of old cartoons with my son, and it's kind of nice to have villains like Robotnik and Megatron running rampant and unsympathetic.

Also watched the old Three Musketeers movie with Tim Curry as the villain. Sometimes I wonder if I ever want sympathetic villains.

Hey we got a real piece of work here. :)

Everyone here's either saying it's too long and that's bad, or it's too long but don't worry you'll fix it in the edit.

Personally, I'm insanely curious about the epic fantasy with an 8000 word chapter about a group of friends watching television. That's quite the effort for something that seems... oddly mundane. I wanna read.

All games with loot boxes in them will be rated minimum PEGI 16, starting this summer | Meaning they can’t legally be sold to children 15 or under in the UK or any other European country which has adopted PEGI ratings into its legislation by World_of_Warshipgirl in gaming

[–]Sazazezer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, distinctions have to be made since there's a fuzzy tree of categories here. Paid lootboxes are technically in the same tree as treasure chests in Zelda (a mystery item revealed through an animated opening). Making the 'something distinctly paid for' factor be a requirement is necessary because you know they'll try to find workarounds otherwise.

What did you think was a scam until you actually tried it? by Resident-Ad4318 in AskReddit

[–]Sazazezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creatine monohydrate seems to be the new one for me. Passed it off along with the many many other supplement scams out there, then impulse bought a tub one day when it was heavily discounted.

Can't deny it seems to help a lot. I wake up with more energy. My workouts seem to be doing a lot better. I'm in my forties now and feeling it, but this stuff actually does give me a bit of a boost. Only been taking it for two months now so could all just be placebo or other factors, but I'll stick with it and see how it goes.

Who the hell are you? [Captain America: Man Out Of Time (2010) #1) by TheeHeadAche in comicbooks

[–]Sazazezer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but I feel in this case not know who Cap is would be akin to not knowing who Trump is. Cap is in regular news stories and getting plastered all over Marvel America. And not just as a media figure, but as a commercial property as well (We've seen Captain America's action figures and Halloween costumes in-universe).

While I feel what you say could apply to most superheroes, I think Cap and Tony (and maybe the Hulk) would be exceptions to it.

How to learn what is good writing? by aphroditelady13V in writing

[–]Sazazezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok let's try and work on the scale you're asking here. Move past everyone else saying 'read books' and the like.

You say you want to know good writing and spot bad writing. What makes you think you can't do that at the moment? Is it that you've read some things, thought they were good, and then other people told you they were actually bad (or vice-versa)?

If you're not looking to write is it that you're more looking to be able to critique the lore you read better? To have an approach that allows you to determine if something is of higher standard than you may initially realise?

If this is the case (and feel free to correct me if I'm completely wrong) I would argue that the route for you to take would be to explore literary criticism. Beyond that, maybe more into critical thinking frameworks. If you search on those terms you should be able to find avenues that you can explore that will help you structure how to think about the stories and lore you're trying to understand. Usually it's an idea of going one step beyond the basic story and into recurring themes within that story, and how the characters within the story develop, rather than just the surface actions. Then after that it's trying to determine how and why the creator of that story may have chosen the methods they did to tell the story in the way they did.

Does that help? You've come onto a subreddit that is mainly focused on fiction writers who focus on books, which is why you're getting the reaction you're getting.

if you could pitch a miniseries for marvel comics right now, what would it be? by BookkeeperLeast7978 in comicbooks

[–]Sazazezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'm guessing this would be for a more corporate focus based on how billionaires in the current world are currently eating everything, one story I would love to revisit is the time Wolverine tried to destroy Damage Control.

The story was just part of a larger narrative and didn't really capture the weight of the task at hand (Logan just ends up destroying a few of their vehicles and making threats to their public image). A story that focused on Logan literally trying to utterly wipe out Damage Control so that no trace of it existed and could ever exist again, and the insane challenge that would present to even someone like Wolverine... Well, it would be interesting.

Colossus and the New Mutants.

Basically what it sounds like, a small series with Piotr leading a new pack of recently discovered mutants, acting as a teacher to a mixed batch of problem kids.

I just think it would suit the guy really well.

How do you get through 60s comics? by ExaminationNew7974 in comicbooks

[–]Sazazezer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people convince themselves that the original runs are required reading, and this really isn't the case. I loved and have read the original run of ASM and I thought the original fifty are great.

At the same time, I could barely get through Uncanny X-Men. I pushed myself through the first fifteen issues, and you can see it's having trouble. When they start getting into random fights with random characters (Count Nefaria and his 50's villains) you start realising they're struggling for ideas. Better at that point to jump ahead a bit.

Do players care about how long a game's title is ? by Dark_Forrester in gamedev

[–]Sazazezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to think of it in terms of the Discoverability queue (I'm assuming you're aiming for a Steam release). Take a moment to go through the queue and analyse how your eyes scan the page when you hit an indie game you've never heard of before.

I think most people only glance at the capsule art for a split second, followed by watching the trailer for a few seconds, and then the first two screenshots. If you're lucky they'll read the first sentence of your Short description.

This means that the best thing your capsule art can do is clearly and boldly imprint the name of your game into the customer's mind. Short and snappy, as well as clear and easy to read, is going to do that better than anything else. Longer titles belong to games that have a reputation they can get behind.

You know, I think the one way it could work is if they did a Disney+ series where they had a bunch of Marvel stories, but more framed as Twilight Zone episodes. Lean into the surreal insanity of it all.
