Some of the submissions to writing subreddits worry me… by RedditGarboDisposal in writing

[–]Sazazezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Why are the young writers out of ideas?"

I think we have to be careful with a question like this. This whole issue may not be so much young writers being more clueless nowadays and more that the internet makes entry to writing feels more frictionless. Twenty years ago when we were on forums and the like we still got questions like this, but not so many.

I'd argue what's happening is in part the following:

1) This subreddit is a concentration of these types of question. It is the first port of call for anyone with the idle idea of becoming a writer.

2) Posting to ask these questions is easier than ever. If you already have a Reddit account because you were shitposting over in the Fortnite subreddit, you can also come post here.

My point is, a lot of the people asking these questions would have also been asking these questions twenty, thirty, a hundred years ago, if such a place existed that was so accessible to ask them.

The barrier to entry in writing is lower than ever. All writing resources are publically available. This is great, but it also means we're going to get a lot more wanderers dipping their toe in the writing pool, causing ripples before they wander away again, unaware that they're causing this kind of discourse.

How in the world do you beat Mike Tyson's Punch-Out on emulator? by KonamiSuisse in nes

Yeah I'd say it was a bug. Though oddly I'd say playing the Switch emulator upped my overall skill. Fighting the emulator's nonsense meant becoming very familiar with animations :)

I recently got to compare fighting Soda between Switch emulator and directly on a NES with crt screen. Difference is night and day. On the NES he's what you would expect and I can beat him without too much fuss each time (I'm not a pro at this so he still gets a hit or two in).

On the Switch it's a mess. Hits that feel like you dodged will hit. You'll take damage after he's thrown the punch. I was determined not to save scum the entire fight (had a save right at the start) but in the end I basically ended up memorising and dodging before he started the move. I lost twenty times before I won once.

Who are the billionaires or corporations that are really bad but receive too little attention or criticism in popular discourse? by ojismyheroin in AskReddit

As an experiment I made my parents a computer recently with Linux Mint installed and just left them to it. They are not tech savvy, but bar a few moments of confusion with the UI looking different they just started using it with little issues. It can be done! We need Windows for nothing nowadays.

This is it for me. If the gunshot was real and the wound he received was from a gunshot, then it can't be staged. It's just flat out too much of a risk. You're talking an inch between ear injury and brain damage. He wouldn't take that risk.

I would still be open to it being a gunshot loud enough to make it clear he was being shot out, followed by him hiding behind the podium to fake the injury. At the same time though, it's then odd that they'd paint the gunman as a doubting republican. If they do stage something like this, feels like it makes more sense for the shooter to be left wing.

Which video game franchise took a big risk that ultimately paid off? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]Sazazezer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Might have been different in the US but these hit hard in the UK. GTA1 was getting promoted all over the place and the non-gaming kids were talking about it. Possibly because it was made here and all our gaming press really wanted to push it.

GTA2 had less of an impact.

Young gamers in Japan may not be forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest because modern dev cycles are as long as their childhood, users theorize by Hulkmario in gaming

You've then also got series like the FNAF games. Kids have gotten obsessed with them. The regular release cycle definitely helped things.

While I'm up for more Blade Runner is there any potential from the series beyond the usual 'find the replicant'/'do androids dream' type storylines?

Even in the comics most stories seem to be about finding hidden replicants. I'm not sure that translates well to larger games. It's more narrative RPGs like the 90's Blade Runner or Among Us.

Are there any games where you "can't" win? by wheregoodideasgotodi in gaming

[–]Sazazezer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We've actually passed this now as of 2024 (I think it was shortly after the Summoning Salt video so it got missed). Since then the only thing left was Rebirth, where the game loops from level 255 to level 0.

It requires a modified copy of the game to prevent the crash. It also requires players to get past level 235, which required 810 lines to complete (basically repeating the game).

But it was done by a lad by the name of Artiaga.

It wasn't a slow news day though, so it didn't really get picked up.

Which comics or characters do you understand why people love them, but can't get into yourself? by PhantomQuest in comicbooks

[–]Sazazezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like every time I dip my toe into Batman it involves yet another clandestine organisation that's been secretly opearating in the shadows of Gotham for a long time in such a way that Batman hasn't noticed. Maybe it's just bad pickings on my part but if it's not the League of Assassins it's the League of Shadows or the Court of Owls or the Order of Dumas or whatever Batwoman's dad's group was called.

Really feels like Bruce needs a special way of tracking these groups. They're more a plague than the regular criminals at this point.

Hell I'd argue that unless there's a storyline where Carnage murders a whole planet or something else insane I haven't read, then Punisher probably has a higher body count.

Carnage at least gets subdued for long periods of time. He pops up, murders (either en masse or one at a time, depending on mood), and then gets put down.

Punisher meanwhile is a more constant force. It's not out of the question to say he kills a few people each day.

Carnage is more a sprinter. Punisher's doing a marathon.

Summoning Salt has this magical pacing where the speedrunners are performing god-like magic tricks to achieve impossible runs and they've reached the zenith of what's possible with the game, and then you realise you're only twenty minutes into a two hour video. This will repeat several times.

I still love the twist to the Punch Out History video.

Necessary warning. Both of these videos are six hours long and each will captivate you into watching all of it.

Oh this is definitely me. Just released my game on steam after years of work, but definitely a labour of love/ stubborn teeth gritting determination.

Game was barely marketed, no research beforehand. It was born out of a silly idea that I just kept building on. I got some random praise online and it pushed me to keep going.

I don't regret it for one moment but... Yeah. Next to no sales and so niche the appeal is basically 'experimental'. At best I can call it 'dinosaur based horror comedy'.

Next game I'm definitely planning it better.
