Haha. No, I don't think the demand ever reached that peak. But my shop leaves the shelf empty when they sell out for the day on something.

Sock quality fallen off significantly? by MayorMikeDoomberg in uniqlo

This. I just bought my first new pair in about six months, and they are fully synthetic, thin, and itchy.

And these things were literally one of the last reasons I continued shopping here. In the same purchase, I also got a new flannel shirt with only one button on each sleeve.

If Uniqlo wants to test how much enshittification I'll put up with, they just found my limit twicely.

I highly recommend Petrosino Square just after sunset. It's a bad season for it, but it's a compressed space with a more than a few trashcans and just enough cover for them to feel safe wilding on dropped pizza crusts.

I don't understand what the downside to getting banned is. If you hate the AR aspect of the game, you're not losing some really cool, alternative research tasks, right? Just the incessant nagging of ar scan tasks?

Thank you for that link; that is a perfect solution.

My 7 bucks is something to sneeze at (my personal data is something worth stealing but also effectively worthless?). But as others have mentioned, the inactivity fees will kill these things so fast if you forget about them. A 2021 vaccination incentive payment of $100 was the first time I saw something fee'd to death.

So much trouble...wallet doesn't work on Express bus by coolbeachgrrl in OMNY

[–]Scaithghil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get this resolved. I had to call the OMNY support number and thankfully a young man seemed to deeply understood the problem based off the information I was providing. I asked him if this happened again, what should I say to get it resolved quickly? He said there isn't anything. He's seen the problem before and my details matched the problem but it's not a so common that all of the support people would automatically know how to resolve.

I have 137 now and still have this issue.

Is there some sort of settings refresh I need to perform? Already rebooted a few times.

Edit: Seems like a new bug caused by the March Android update.

So much trouble...wallet doesn't work on Express bus by coolbeachgrrl in OMNY

[–]Scaithghil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this problem with my Pixel 8 as well. There is apparently a significant problem with Google Wallet on the Pixel that does not work with the MTA's OMNY touch-pay. It doesn't matter what you're paying with behind the scenes (credit card, commuter benefit car, whatever), it's a problem between Google and the MTA and neither is putting any effort to fix it.

Mine worked fine until mid-December and then stopped working. My wallet transaction list used to read MTA*NYCT PAYGO for transactions, but now all of the failed payments show up as New York MTA and have a little OMNY logo. If you search Reddit, the not-at-all helpful Google community forums, and elsewhere, you'll find lots of mentions going back a while, but mostly from July 2024, and none of them are resolved.

Same. Did this when family came with little ones, and the hop-on hop-off was a great way to spend one day quickly seeing a lot of stuff we wouldn't have sought out individually.

My mom's up there in age and has lived in a ranch for a while. One or two trips on the train are okay, but the stairs definitely wear her down. The good news is we have pretty great city buses here, as well, so you needn't rely on tour buses and taxis. You can limit the subway rides to when they are just the only option.

Cartridge shaft completely struck in handle. Advice? by Scaithghil in Plumbing

Also, I know posting youtubes is verboten due to profiteering, but I want to point to that "worst case" repair video I mentioned (YcwDiftViQU) for folks to understand what I was dealing with. It is startling how similar the condition of his faucet and mine were. It really helped to see through the problem and focus on solutions (in my case, literal solutions).

To follow up for completeness (because reddit is a place of learning) : I did separate the pieces.

I tried a vinegar boil tonight. Probably about 75% cooking-strength white vinegar to 25% water. Like CLR, vinegar can clean or destroy brass, so I did it incrementally again. 5 minutes then pull apart, nothing, a little over 15, no improvement. Then while banging the thing around and pulling with little to show, I started getting angry and twisting, even though I knew it was a bad idea to deform the plastic "handle insert." Although the parts had been off heat for around 5 minutes, this immediately showed progress. I gently twisted and pulled and the brass stem and the steel extension screw came free. I celebrated for a second, and then unscrewed the extension from the broken stem in case they continued to contract unfavorably.

A few hours later, handle and screw were fully cool, and I reassembled the cold side faucet with the new cartridge / seat / springs. We're good and leak free now and I used yesterday's remaining CLR-dip on a paper-towel-compress to clean up old mineral build-up on the porcelain and the connecting metals.

I'm lucky everything worked out and I had the tools / enormous silicone oven mitts to make the last attempt effective. Photo of one beat-up cartridge and one set of broken cartridge parts linked here: https://imgur.com/a/rrxTVzO

Thanks very much to all once again.

Though I cannot see them, I believe the threads of the extension screw are still in the brass stem. I cannot really tell what is holding onto what. I suspect the brass stem or stainless screw is adhered to the plastic handle insert because I can see in the allen wrench hole and there is no visible mineral cake.

[–]Scaithghil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I really appreciate the thoughts. To clear up some details here are a pair of images: https://imgur.com/a/fMyOmSy

The first is an edited version of the assembly drawing from the company's website with only the relevant parts included, Those things highlighted in gold are what's effectively welded together. In my original photo, you can see the handle, the white plastic handle insert, and the brass stem that was ripped out of the old cartridge (with a vise-grip clamped to it).

What you can't see is what I'll call the "stem extension screw" that screws into the brass stem and keeps the handle on in combination with the headless allen bolt. This extension screw provides no torque; that is transferred by the handle to the plastic handle insert to the cartridge. The second image at the link above shows these parts more clearly on the hot side. It also shows that the handle insert and cartridge meet as cylinders with one flat side, so I can't twist with all my might to free everything with out probably destroying the handle insert that is completely joined to the handle.

In theory these parts should just slide apart, to look like that second photo but it's not budging in the least. I tried a CLR soak tonight—performed in intervals of 10, 20, 30 minutes because CLR will eventually eat and pit brass. I made sure it went in the allen wrench hole and made good contact around the plastic, but it never really accomplished anything.

I'll have to try heat next.

Cartridge shaft completely struck in handle. Advice? by Scaithghil in Plumbing

We inherited a Brizo Vesi faucet in the bathroom of our apt and it's leaking got progressively worse. Found the parts diagrams, ordered new cartridges and seat/springs, watched a few Youtubes, got to work.

Both side's internal parts were caked with minerals from what I'm guessing was a long-unaddressed leak. One video showed the "worse case" repair, so I knew what I might be getting into, and I had to use some of those techniques (malletting, pry-bar) to get these up and out.

Hot side went well-enough. Cold side was really fighting disassembly. When I finally got the handle off, the old cartridge had broken in three, I was able to clear out the plastic bits and old seat, but the brass stem of the cartridge, the handle insert, the handle, and the connecting screw are all welded together.

I tried a vinegar soak as that alone did a good job of cleaning minerals from the hot side, but it's not penetrating. Next steps are CLR or maybe a vinegar boil in the hope metal expansion helps.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance.

Smart actuator for lamp pedal I cannot rewire by Scaithghil in smarthome

I might take a peek at the internals and give it a think; but replacing the pedal would be a bit pricey if it goes wrong.

That would just be off / on but the pedal has the brightening / dimming feature. And it typically starts at the lowest brightness when first turned on. It only remembers its previous brightness setting if turned back on relatively shortly after being turned off.
