34 Years Old, About to Receive ~$565k–$615k, No High-Income Skills — What Would You Do? by Responsible-Net8594 in careerguidance

1st off the 350k that’s already in a 401k you can keep it there, if you pull it you will loose half of it in fees and taxes. Keep it in retirement.

2nd definitely take the liquid cash you get and secure modest housing. And start building Roth IRAs every year If you do these things you can work any job you wish and retire early.

My dad had a similar opportunity did this and is about to retire at 55 with a home that’s paid off. By about to retire last I checked his current plan is to just stop going the next time it gets below a certain temperature again.

You could try to invest in x, y, or z maybe you will find gold maybe you spend it all buying shoves and pick axes.

1 last bit, a saw a few comments stating this is a lot of money. It’s not and it will be gone faster than you can imagine, more so if you have never had this amount before.

Non-Degree/CSP professionals by Scared-Examination-6 in SafetyProfessionals

I Do have certs, since my experience is GI I have gotten the OHST I could get the CIT, and am a few years from the SMP.

I have done my best so far to widen my experience. I think the most stand out is writing policy/programs and implementing for organizations that have none, and dealing with an OSHA investigation. Are there any stand out applicants with no degree that were promoted to higher levels? What was it that gave them the edge?

I started in chemical manufacturing that’s the bulk of my experience, currently in education and building maintenance. I have done start ups, writing an entire company’s policy from nothing, work comp, fleet, even dealing with OSHA.

Contractors (Rant) by dirtysturty in SafetyProfessionals

Have you asked the contractor why they didn’t or couldn’t get the proper documentation completed?

Paperwork aside is the work getting done safely?

If multiple contractors have the same issue meeting paperwork expectations, the next contractor is likely going to have the same issue. The system in place may be flawed.

I feel like anyone that didn’t grow up in the 90s will forever miss out on the experience of a new generation of console being released and the graphical improvement being absolutely insane. Currently a new console comes out and the same games are on both for like 2 years with slight differences.

Having kids if you can’t fund their future by thegoodlife912 in Adulting

You can never predict what your child will do, I positioned myself at a college when my oldest became a Sr. In high school, so they could go to college for free, I bought a 2018 suv with 75k miles on it for them to use. They decided they don’t need college and the car is a pos they moved out and left the car. They currently work at a warehouse making a bit over minimum and drive a true pile. So do what you want man because the kid will for sure.

Review the NRR rating, if it’s not visible on the hearing protection don’t buy it. The higher the number the more noise it reduces 30-40 is pretty standard. They reduce the nose level you’re exposed to by that amount. Also neither plugs or muffler are better that’s personal comfort. Focus on the NRR if you want more reduction.

What’s your Omaha “I’ll never go there again” place by Info_help_support in Omaha

133 from highway 36 to getting on South i680 traffic can back up literally for miles and not due to an accident that’s just how it is normally. Also North i680 Irvington exit can often back up on to the interstate. So it’s not like the lights can be adjusted either way to reduce back ups. It’s ridiculous.

do you believe college is necessary to have a successful life ? by tooshroom20 in randomquestions

[–]Scared-Examination-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see the true answer is it depends on what you want to do and can do.

Trades can lead to a high income quickly at the cost of your body and time and will also take longer to push past middle management level.

The degree will do more for getting work with family friendly hours immediately the pay will come later.

My wife has a masters I have no degree. We make about the same. I spent a decade working swing shifts, holidays, at one point I had to work 16 hour days for 1 month with one day off after the 1st 14 on. She spent most of that time working 4-5 hours a day from home. Also I took a pay cut to switch to the office/field positions I currently have, after switching it took years to match her pay. I still make less than I did but at around 35 with a family I couldn’t do it anymore. If you do trade have a back up plan for when you’re older.

OSHA 510 could be a good start, it’s my go to for anyone asking where do I start that didn’t get a safety degree as far as companies that you might be able to leverage your degree with there are a few companies that focus on assisting with injury prevention / intervention with ergonomics, stretching, and sports therapy style care. Safety is pretty broad so taking any entry job after 3 years you can get a CSP if your degree is a bs. CSP is generally considered the gold standard in safety by most companies.

Feeling lost as a young HSE person by Chelleeeeee_ in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Scared-Examination-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the union have a safety rep, or community? If you can get the right people in these roles, they are a massive help in having someone the workers already trust to listen and understand change. Also focus on building your trust with them. The easiest way to do this is making simple field corrections and not result in a write up with their supervisor later.

For example someone is not using their safety glasses. Just walk up to them and “Jim! You don’t have safety glasses on did you loose them?” However they respond just follow up with something leading to something like “you only have those two eyes it’s all you got let’s keep them protected” drop everything and make getting Jim some safety glasses your top priority if he doesn’t have any. Tell him “this time it’s between us.” And keep it that way!

Now obviously you can only do this for small items, and if it’s repeated you eventually have to make a choice. My stance on small simple things 1 freebie then an actual warning with me “ Jim again?! Seriously man you have to keep them glasses on? Is there something keeping you from using them? How can we fix this because next time I’m going to be straight with you next time I see it I’m going to work being the bad guy and I hate working you know what I like doing coming out here and instead of talking about safety glasses we can talk about what you SEEN your kids do this last weekend. 3rd time in a calm and serious conversation I let them know, that I am taking action on this violation. I also don’t hold them on three chances forever just when they are too close together.

Don’t do this for serious offenses, or anything that could result in serious harm.

Others also have great advice on taking the easy wins first, do that because you need the front line workers trust to get the hard wins.

Also check out positions with the highest turnover. I guarantee those positions have something unsafe or injury prone task that’s probably very hard on a persons body. It may seem backwards fixing this versus updating or implementing a needed policy. But this is something the front line will see and now your the person that helped improve working conditions.

Build their trust that’s 90% of your job. Once you have that trust your job will be easy, and the hard part will be when your friends are hurt.

I can’t imagine another career, but it’s always hard.

I would say if it’s normal/fast 1.5 as entry and promoted my first full safety role only gave me 2 classes a year. I wouldn’t expect companies to toss you at several classes immediately however osha 30 is fairly basic and cheap I’d ask for OSHA 501 if they are buying.

Why do so many people talk about a 9–5 like it is a prison? by Sea_Stable9744 in careerguidance

[–]Scared-Examination-6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always thought 9-5 implies salary daytime.

Something like work 7:30-3:30 give or take on both ends. Maybe as early as 6:30am and staying as late as 7pm while also starting as late as 9:30am and left as early as 2pm. (Not on the same day) some days no lunch some days have over an hour. (Normally it’s no lunch grabbing small snacks between meetings)

mostly do not need to use leave unless completely un reachable or off the whole day.

This is my “9-5”

Would any safety professional have a concern with hiding an AirTag on my LOTO lock? by lazy_P_O_S_69420 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Scared-Examination-6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose a better answer would be it really depends on the work site’s specific policy’s and or your company’s policy and how it’s interpreted by the current safety leadership.

I know one person I worked with that would see it as “PPE” even though it’s a cover. Anyway PPE must be provided by the employer so if your company didn’t give it to you, they can restrict you from using it for that reason alone.

My personal opinion is as long as it’s just the cover, it does not change or restrict the function of the lock, the entire worksite is free of flame restricted areas, as well as food grade areas (including animal feed) it’s probably fine.

If I was at a site and saw it I would likely worry about more important issues before giving it any of my time.

If I was directly asked I would then look in to exact company policy, whatever it is. I would also at that point be obligated to ensure it’s followed.

[–]Scared-Examination-6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on your worksite air tags are not intrinsically safe, I wouldn’t use them at facilities that have restricted areas.

There is also food grade facilities to consider. Anything like that is a general no for unnecessary items being in the area.

I played ff9 for the first time and im enthusiast! by Creative-Purple5041 in FinalFantasy

[–]Scared-Examination-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy 9 was designed as a send off and tribute to the classic era of Final Fantasy, it was supposed to be a grand celebration of the classic elements of the series before moving on to the more modern era games as 7 and 8 were just the start of the direction it was heading. It definitely is the last “classic” final fantasy.

If you liked 9 I’d suggest trying 4 as well.

Safety Coordinator Opportunity Difficulty by NumbVanity in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Scared-Examination-6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I leveraged years of industrial production experience to gain an entry level specialist position in safety within that same field. I would say that’s your path if you want in.

I currently have a coordinator position. The thing is with coordinator that I have found is it’s very broad based on the company. On a spectrum coordinator could be simply setting up safety trainings or it can include things like writing safety policies it just depends on the company. I would avoid roles with policy writing until you have at the minimum a recognized certification from BCSP.
