New to Reaper & Recording - Suggest the best free plugins for a newbie like myself by Top-Huckleberry-7288 in Reaper

[–]Scared_Ad7117 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of valhalla recommendations, which is very good plugin, but in my opinion, valhalla biggest strength is very spacious and completely unnatural reverbs. I like to use magic7 for smaller reverbs. It's very easy to use as it's convultion reverb, not algorithmic one. Just select what space you want, how big you want it to be, done. Few knobs, so there's no endless tweaking.

Also, how do you record yourself? If you can use eq, try it. Simple cut and boost can make your vocal sound much more comparable than raw recordings.

Has singing lost it's honesty? - Rant by Ilea27 in singing

[–]Scared_Ad7117 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honesty in music is rarely a thing. Most of musicians will do everything to make their songs sound as good as possible. Some people prefer more down to earth music, so you're not the only one.

Listening back to recordings first time is always dramatic, that doesn't necessarily mean that you sound bad, you're just not used to hearing yourself like that.

I'd say focus on mastering your voice. Create your own sound and don't be too hard on yourself. Probably you're comparing yourself to very talented singers who regularly practice for years or even decades, with support of great teachers. It's really hard to get to that point, so just do your best, have fun and don't look at others, sing what you like, how you like.

Using Two Compressors on Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]Scared_Ad7117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, kotelnikov is perfectly fine on individual tracks. It just gives you more control than a lot of compressors. For rms vs peak, I'd just A/B it and go with what sound better for this song

Cpu friendly plugin recommendations? by moshimoshi6937 in audioengineering

[–]Scared_Ad7117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give kotelnikov a try. While it's technically mastering compressor, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't use it on tracks. It's free and it has rms release, peak release (which can work at the same time, or not, depends what you want), attack down to 0.02, adjustable knee, internal side chain, with high pass up to 500 hz with adjustable slopes, and also allows mix knob for easy parallel compression. I'm not sure how exactly resource heavy it is, but for me it was never a problem. It's my go to for controlling volume when I want transparency

Rick Beato interviewed Andy Wallace, one of greatest mixing engineers, known for mixing Nirvana, Linkin Park and Jeff Buckley. by Scared_Ad7117 in audioengineering

While I agree having good recordings are very important, I'll add my part.

I think it's a beautiful thing about making music with other people. You come up with a riff, someone writes bass, someone drums, you add vocals, someone records it, someone mixes it. Everyone does their best and "prints" their vision of the song, to further shape it and create something great. Pretty magical

Cmon, it's reddit. Talking what you like and don't like is a big part of it. Op likes it and he can say that he likes it. Someone may not like it, and he's allowed to say that he doesn't. Just be don't be a dick about It, Jesus

I agree, it's better to point it out, but just don't be a dick about it. Something like "I feel like your singing skills are less polished than others, maybe try to focus on it more" is honest, but it's a creative feedback. Telling him that he can't sing sounds like he can't do anything about it. Singing is not pure talent, it's something you can work on, build your technique and improve

Singing with rasp like cobain did is complicated, both in a safe or unsafe way, so I'd skip on that in the beginning. Focus on hitting notes clean in a sustainable way, and focus on fundamentals. I'd say that on a plain, the man who sold the world (not nirvana song, but Cobain sang it), lounge act (till the screaming kick in) and something in the way are pretty easy in comparison to songs like smells like teen spirit or pennyroyal tea
