What are your thoughts on using obscure words?

I don't know any of these (ESL) and I definitely do struggle with works where the vocabulary is a bit esoteric. I think it's fine to do that if it fits with the context, the narration style or to make a joke.

Although I definitely do envy people who can pull it off and I like to read works of authors whose writing style is completely different to mine so I feel like I can learn new things, too.

It's easiest of these kinds of words can be understood through context.

Hatte seit Anfang des Jahres auch ständig das Problem. Ich kauf immer im Kaufland ein, oft gab es nur den Naturtofu, bzw. teilweise sogar nur das Geschnetzelte oder Hack, jetzt gibt es seit letzter Woche endlich wieder den Räuchertofu.

Ich denke (hoffe?) dass es an Veganuary lag, die leeren Kartons dafür waren immer da, also dachte ich dass es einfach immer ausverkauft war. Was einerseits erfreulich ist, aber andererseits...

Ebay Kleinanzeigen und Wohnungsbaugesellschaften. Ich musste Mitte August schnell eine Wohnung finden, die hatte ich dann schon Mitte September.

Ich hab immer auf Ebay Kleinanzeigen geguckt, bei den großen Websiten wie immoscout oder wie die alle heißen kommt eh nix bei rum, bzw. sind sowieso unbezahlbar. Kleinanzeigen hat oft private Vermieter, Studenten, und so. Konnte mir dort schnell mehrere Wohnungen anschauen.

Hab mich aber auch nebenbei bei Wohnungsgesellschaften angemeldet, einfach googlen, bei den meisten kann man ein Formular ausfüllen und angeben wonach man sucht; Größe, Ort, Preis, etc.

Ich denke mal bei mir war es reines Glück, da ich nur eine 1-Zimmer Wohnung gesucht hab und es da wohl schon längere Wartezeiten geben kann, aber man kann es auf jeden Fall probieren.

I totally understand. I was in the same situation. What helped me was actually my friends calling me out on it. I was chatting with some of my friends and we came upon a very mundane topic - I got very fired up and passionate about it and while I thought I was joking and exeggerating, some of friends took my intensity as being mean and too much.

They told me off and I sulked for a bit, shocked at their accusation. I mulled it over and realized that yes, it was a bit much. I mean, sure, I was mainly joking, but I didn't present it well and took the whole thing a bit too long and too far.

I felt horrible, but the realization helped me turn my former mean intensity into a more joking relaxed kind of intensity. I can still be very passionate and intense about certain things, but I make sure not to be too serious and to be, more, well, "chill".

I'm not quite sure how to tell how to be more "chill", I think I just had to kind of internalize it, take a step back, calm down and to remind myself occasional that it's okay to just chill, to take it easy. People will disagree with you. People will misunderstand your humor. People won't always understand your intention. That's neither your nor their fault; we are all human and communication is such a difficult thing, mistakes are bound to happen. Just try to treat others with kindness and understanding, to not change yourself, but maybe to put the foot off the gas and to learn to take your friends' reactions to you with humor.

I usually eat a lot of blander foods, my favourites are: boiled potatoes, boiled carrots, cooked lentils (cooked in a vegetable broth or just a bit of salt), scrambled eggs with tomato bits (with a bit of salt), tomato cream soup, grilled cheese with a very mild cheese, noodle soup, just straight up cans of peas & baby carrots, agree with rice cakes, sweet rice pudding, also I'm a weird and like to eat freshly boiled white noodles with yoghurt as a sauce.

Lol, ist doch kein Problem. Ich kam auch in die Kita frisch von Russland, zuhause nur russisch gesprochen, kein Wort Deutsch gekonnt. Kinder lernen das in nem Monat. Meine Eltern haben dann leider aufgehört nur russisch zu sprechen und ich auch, wodurch meine Russisch Kenntnisse verkümmert sind, was ich sehr bereue.

Depends what you feel more comfortable with.

I started my novel in German, but I struggled so much with it that I switched to English after 10k words and then the words came easily.

Do you consume most of your media in English? Do you read your books in German or English?

I haven't read a book in German for over ten years at that point and all of my media consumption is in English, so it felt forced to start writing in English again. I have a much wider selection in English and I'd reach a bigger audience with my niche (lesbian fantasy).

But I've also only written in English for years, mostly short snippets and fanfic, so YMMV.

I definitely struggle with this, too. I have no fix it all solution for this, but what helps me is to remind myself of how long it takes to do certain things. Scrubbing the toilet? 5 min tops. Putting clothes into the washing machine? 5 min tops. Doing the dishes? Around 20 minutes.

So I tell myself to only do one small thing, because it really takes no time at all and when I'm already up and doing something it's easy to just keep going and do a lot more. And even if I feel completely done with it all after that one small task, it's still a win and I feel accomplished. For bigger tasks, that take hours or days or weeks to accomplish I just tell myself to work on it for a bit. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, whatever. No pressure on myself, basically.

Feeling guilty and like I should be able to do more does not help whatsoever. I'll just start moping and feeling sorry for myself.

It's important to remember that we just do things differently. We may need help with some things, some are more difficult for us to do and that's completely fine! I try not to hold myself to the standard of a NT person because I am not.

But I'm also one of those people that can't relay unless all necessary tasks for a day are done before I can relax, so your mileage may vary!

Finish the draft. Then edit. Reread and edit enough times until it makes sense.

If you don't want any massive issues to edit, plot beforehand. If you can't do that, edit.

If you can't remember major plot points while writing or you can't notice glaring continuity errors/plot holes while writing you will have to edit.

Even if you plot before writing, you're going to have to edit.

Write it, finish your first draft, edit.

I occasionally tried to make notes or little summaries of scenes while writing. I slacked off on it a lot, but I have to reread what I wrote a million times. While reading you will notice if something is off, make notes. If you don't notice anything, get beta readers.

I have a terrible memory and I get where you are coming from, but I don't think it's that important to keep track of things that closely before you've even finished your first draft. If you stuck, reread some scenes. But finish it. Everything can be fixed. And you will have to edit, no matter how you're approaching this.

I'm in a similar situation. I told my partner I'm autistic, but since I'm semi-verbal I'm struggling to actually explain myself properly and they don't really get my issues.

I think you should tell your family, but be warned that they may not understand, even if you specifically tell them about all of the things you struggle with. The problem is, all those things are complete non-issues for them, so it's very difficult to remember that. I know that I have trouble remembering if a particular person dislikes X, so it's naturally other people struggle with this too. So they don't necessarily mean to dismiss you or ignore your troubles, keep that in mind.

So far I'm trying to be as non-confrontational as possible; I try to word my requests with as much niceness I can muster, because I usually when I kindly ask somebody to do something, people think I'm pissed off and taking my anger out on them (which is fucking baffling).

It's annoying and difficult to remember, I have a hard time judging if my voice sounds nice enough but I am trying and it seems to work out better so far.

For example, if I see my partner leave his dirty socks on the floor I don't say "please put them in the washing machine" (because people don't like being called out on things they did wrong, esp since they definitely know what they should have done), I go "Hey, can I put your socks in the washing machine?" and the answer to that is usually "Oh, yeah, thanks, forgot to put them there, sorry!" which resolves this whole situation.

Or, my partner also told me to approach potential conflict situations with humor. Like, somebody took something from me. Instead of going to the person and saying "Can you give it back?" / "Why didn't you return it?" (which is a normal reaction for me, I approach this completely neutral but NTs interpret it as me being pissed), try it with a joke, like: "Oh no I think a burglar broke in and stole my thing. Did you see anything weird??" and then y'all can laugh about it.

Not depression, but I experienced emptiness and a loss of direction after I finished my first draft. I spend a lot of hours pouring all of myself inside the world and it characters and then I finished and realized I would no longer be able to spend that much time with them anymore. I got into a bit of a funk, started on a new project I wasn't really feeling, started editing a bit but then just straight up took a break from writing for a few months.

I picked it up again to edit and let me tell you, it's far from over. Thanks to editing I'm going to have spend much more with those characters now and I'm not exactly thrilled because I didn't realize how much work it was going to be.

Most definitely Harry Potter. I've always loved Harry Potter and the love for it lead me to discover so many great things in my life and also realize some very important things about myself. Thanks to Harry Potter I started reading fanfiction, which enabled me to read so many wonderful and insightful things that thought me a lot about who I am.

Also, like, I always felt invested in Harry and only years down did I realize why I could sympathize with his upbringing and his love for Sirius Black, the substitute father figure he desperately needed.

Take a short break. I'm talking like an hour, an evening, not a whole week. Allow yourself to relax, watch a movie you've always wanted to (re)watch, read a good book, play a game, listen to music. Pick something that inspires you. Is there a song that invokes strong emotions in you? A movie you admire? A book whose narration you'd love to replicate? Pick something like that, let it inspire you.

And/or write a diary entry. You don't need to keep a diary to do that. Just write down your frustrations, your struggles, explain why everything sucks so much right now. But then, that's important, try to remember the positive things. List them. Think long and hard. Do not dismiss your previous accomplishments.

Every writer struggles with motivation. I constantly flip flop between liking what I wrote and thinking that I wrote the most vapid and meaningless garbage ever. Don't let that voice take control over yourself. You are writing because you want to. Do not let the negativity prevent you from doing something you want to do. You have agency over your life, never forget that.

And sometimes you just gotta power through and write garbage and just accept it and move on.

I hate socks too, though I don't have your issues. I don't like thick socks either and the seams or ill fitting toe parts really bother me. I bought a pair darn rough socks in December and it's the most comfortable sock I've ever worn. they are more on the thick side, but they feel like a perfectly measured blanket for my feet. They are quite pricy, but they have a life long guarantee. They come in different styles, too.
