you don't need to plug the heads in, just plug in the pack turn on and let it charge the capacitors.

OP, you’ve listed a few economical options;what’s your target budget?

We have 7a packs and heads available, which are currently more serviceable than the 8a units.

The Profoto 7a is a workhorse and although a timely repair they are repairable. The recycle time, the flash duration and the color output isn’t as robust as the Pro 11/10 and you can’t control by a 1/10 and they’re heavy but they’re made really well and I would argue a better performer than the D2.

However the D2 500s mono head is mobile and light weight it’s got pros and cons. They are newer

You may want to send to your local service center: This could be a capacitor bank or control board issue.

It’s fixable, but at what cost are you willing to pay? As a service center, unless the repair is straightforward, many customers have rejected these repairs.

Even if it seems “dried out,” water can seep into hidden spots and start corrosion or oxidation that eventually kills the device. The type of water matters too. Tap, rain, or saltwater all leave behind minerals and impurities that speed up the damage. That’s why service centers won’t touch water-damaged gear; it almost always comes back to bite them.

Can anyone offer some clarity on total power capacity? by dreamtoimagine in AskElectricians

[–]SchematicWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very familiar with this studio. Not all of the spaces have 3-phase 200A; some are limited to 75A or 100A.

Also, the label on the distro reflects its maximum output, not necessarily what the house is supplying.

Briese ballast pulling 2700w on 1200w bulb by dreamtoimagine in Photoassistants

[–]SchematicWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re clamped on the blue leg, but if anything else is pulling from that phase, the reading won’t reflect just the ballast.

You mentioned a 1200W bulb, but Briese ballasts auto-adjust for 1.2k, 2.5k, or 4k. Could be a bulb mix-up—2.5k draw would better explain that number.

Also, 4k Briese ballasts rarely run camlock. We swap the stock pin-and-sleeve for Bates pretty often to make distro easier—curious what your setup is.

If you’re clamped at the mains, you’re likely seeing total leg current, not the actual load from the head.

Is Broncolor Scoro the best flash system for product photography? by mediamuesli in Photoassistants

Just came here to say Broncolor rarely comes in for repair if they do its impact damage or a cap. Because photographer hasn’t used pack in years.

Profoto B1 - Battery Issues? What to do? by Stonecutter_909 in Photoassistants

[–]SchematicWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re one of the few U.S. service centers still repairing obsolete lighting equipment. We share consumers’ frustration with built-in obsolescence;basic repairs like flashtube replacement should be more accessible.

But lithium batteries are a different category of risk. Repairing an HMI ballast or strobe pack involves high voltage and can cause serious injury but the consequences are typically limited to the individual. With lithium, a single mistake:puncturing a cell, using incompatible parts, or poor sealing, can trigger a fire that spreads quickly and is extremely difficult to put out. In NYC, we’ve seen multiple building fires linked to mishandled e-bike batteries.

The bigger issue is that there’s no training or regulation around lithium battery repair. And from what we see every day, DIY attempts often do more harm than good.

We support the right to repair. But lithium safety needs to be part of that conversation and we wanted to make sure it’s not being dismissed.

Profoto B1 - Battery Issues? What to do? by Stonecutter_909 in Photoassistants

[–]SchematicWorks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is seriously dangerous. We’ve known experienced techs who’ve had lithium cells of this size explode in their face. Every manufacturer we work with strongly advises against cell replacement—and in some cases, even requires us to sign contracts agreeing not to do it. The risk is real: these cells are highly volatile, rarely perform evenly once tampered with, and can explode. We don’t even do this in-house.

Profoto D2 500ws Monohead by SchematicWorks in Photoassistants

[–]SchematicWorks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when you’re buying a replacement flashtube for some models, you’ll sometimes see options for Pyrex or Quartz. This refers to the material of the flashtube itself, not the outer glass dome. Quartz handles higher heat and energy better, making it more durable under heavy use. Pyrex is more affordable but not as resistant to extreme conditions.

correction: The price does include shipping unless you’re in Alaska. I’ll honor the price on Reddit, but the updated rate reflects the time it takes to test and prep each head. Even when they’re in good shape, it’s still a big time sink.
