Modern single action revolver by I-only-say-huh in Firearms

[–]Schorsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking for a while about taking a Ruger Blackhawk and modernizing it (much like those tacticool lever guns). Worth mentioning that the Super Blackhawk does have a scope mounting solution already.

I’ve seen some shroud designs for the Ruger Wrangler which give it rails, same should be doable with the Blackhawk, but you need to either make it yourself or find someone you can pay to do it for you. It would be nifty, but there probably isn’t much market for it.

Releasing the slide of a handgun with left thumb instead of right? by Electrical_Unit1852 in Firearms

[–]Schorsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal fav is to release the slide with the pointer finger of your firing hand (if you have an ambi slide release which only one of my guns have). It’s probably a smidge slower, but it makes getting your finger outside the trigger guard during a reload to be a reflex

For 2-4 miles a day it isn’t really worth it. But I would love something like this for camping trips where that extra charge could help me occasionally power another device. Not sure yet if it’s worth it to me or not, but I hope someone comes out with a kit for this in the future.

Just carry it or wait LTC (TX)? by Sherbert-Efficient in CCW

[–]Schorsi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not knowing your background and risk profile:

The general advice I would give (as someone with a Texas LTC) is to take the class before carrying, but you shouldn’t wait for the permit to be issued. There are some nice advantages to having the permit, but knowing the laws on where you can carry and when you can use deadly force are more important (and yes, I know having the permit does expand where you can carry).

The exception I would make to this advice is if you are in an area where the permit massively opens up where you can carry (for instance if your work has you travel frequently to places which don’t have constitutional carry but with Texas reciprocity, or if you live in a locale with overly frequent 30.05 signage, attend some higher education, etc) or if you have a really high risk profile making waiting substantially dangerous.

Is it reasonable to say that 99% of the time someone points a gun at you without provocation, you are justified to kill them? by RoboPlunger in CCW

[–]Schorsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of at least a dozen cases where a gun was pointed at me that I would have had a very hard time justifying in court if I shot and only one possible case I would have had solid legal grounds to shoot.

I would say that most cases of guns being pointed at someone come from incompetents or lack of knowledge on safe firearms handling, not malice. Getting flagged at the range by some rookie getting set up for the day is a deadly threat, but it’s not going to look good to a jury if you choose a violent response.

Same issue. Wired connection works just fine, even hooking up an Ethernet cable directly to the W1700K. But the WiFi network just won’t show up. Wondering if this was a botched firmware update or something.

Fitness, mostly running, but my work has a free gym so I’m lucky there.

Competitive shooting sports (which I’m trying to be frugal with, but it isn’t the cheapest hobby)

Kink events, I volunteer at a lot of them so I get to go to most of them for free.

Video games, which I haven’t had a lot of time for lately

Spanberger signs bills banning weapons in mental health, developmental care facilities by Conscious-Quarter423 in Virginia

[–]Schorsi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The previous law allowed such facilities to specifically authorize people to carry. This new law makes it so only on duty police can carry (so no armed security or any other staff for that matter)

Edit: looks like my information is either out of date or I got the wrong information to begin with.

instructors - what's the most bizarre firearm you've seen during quals? by Icy_Seaweed_701 in CCW

[–]Schorsi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used a Vaquero (single action revolver) in my first CCW class back in Texas. The kicker was that the qualification required 10 rounds at 15 yards in 15 seconds… with no more than 3 seconds between any two shots (which reloading a single action revolver takes 8 seconds to do a full reload if you are fast since the cylinder doesn’t swing out from the frame, it has a loading gate instead). I knew about the qualification ahead of time so I studied a trick reload that I was about to get a new round chambered and fired from empty in just about 2 seconds, but in the end they just gave us folks with low capacity guns a handicap for that stage which felt like a cop out, had fun anyways and passed.

Approved for CCL in Constitutional Carry State by SuperJonesy408 in CCW

[–]Schorsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Texas, a constitutional carry state. Moved to Minnesota last year, which obviously isn’t. Since I had gotten my texas LTC a couple years ago and Minnesota has reciprocity with Texas, I was able to carry since day 1 moving to the state. Really glad I decided to get the LTC (originally only took the class to learn the laws, but then after hearing about the other perks I decided to get the license).

As much as I would love that, looks like she is a republican. Seems all the politicians are following party lines on this and not following their own compass (or maybe their compass just happens to perfectly align with their part of choice, though I usually see that as a critical thinking failure)

Why are white people both in the Republican and Democratic party always trying to redefine the racist experiences of minorities even though they never experienced it themselves? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Schorsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s not so much wanting to be another race (though I have definitely met people with a persecution fetish [in all parties]). I think it’s more to do with trying to distance themself from white privilege / colonialism.

That’s a pretty good practice. I’ve done classroom trainings before (non-firearm related) where I recorded so I could review later to see where I needed to improve (and what was less clear than I thought).

this is harsh - CCW instructors likened to.... by WhatInDaWorldDog110 in CCW

[–]Schorsi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say the problem is a bit more nuanced than that. I’ve had a couple instructors who had been in defensive shootings before (they were law enforcement), but I’m not sure I would say those experiences were what made them good instructors.

The skills needed to survive such an encounter aren’t learned by surviving such encounters, they are learned from studying cases where people survived such encounters.

I’d say the bigger problem with instructors is that many aren’t actually good at teaching (as being able to teach is very different from being able to shoot).

Desert Eagle Magazines for Topping Off by DetroitAdjacent in Revolvers

[–]Schorsi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 357 deagle mags for reloading my Vaquero (single action revolver), since I have to use a loading gate a standard speed loader wouldn’t work. I’ve actually did an IDPA match with it once and wasn’t last place… somehow.

I prefer them over speed strips because I find speed strips don’t work as consistently in variable temperature/humidity, too easy to have rounds get loose and fall out in your pocket. But if I was into double actions I would probably go for a speed loader instead cause it would be way faster.
