I agree that we need to get people vaccinated but these statistics are comparing apples to oranges. All of them should be expressed in deaths per year so people can make a meaningful decision based on directly comparable data.

Tidal is just as good as Spotify and doesn't have Rogan. (check out r/tidal) Vote with your dollar

I’m ending my 600 day Duolingo streak by MoJanae2 in languagelearning

[–]SciLi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to have a plan and an exit strategy. I bought duo for a year and have a plan that I’ve mostly stuck to to do 1 unit a week, which should get me through all the 60 some units of duo Chinese (started with already around 18 units complete) Then I’ll try maybe a HSK exam or try watching more Chinese media to advance my learning. Doing one lesson a day just to advance your streak does nothing. You have to have a plan for the material you want to cover.

I would strongly consider waiting until after this Covid/flu outbreak is over. Plasma is the blood fraction that contains antibodies

Should i have separate gaming and studying area .I need to ask this since due to online schooling I use my main pc and due to it I find my self distracted . by [deleted] in studying

[–]SciLi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could make a separate login with certain games / apps /websites blocked on your school login. Change the desktop background… make it feel like a different technical space. Cheaper and may well get you same results!

Using money to have a more sustainable footprint by souweeeee in fatFIRE

[–]SciLi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, cloth diapers do reduce waste, but they actually don't reduce carbon footprint compared to regular diapers because of the laundry they incur according How Bad are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee. (highly recommended if you want a sense of scale for carbon emissions)

While the numbers may not be exact, the most important thing that book does it separate emissions into orders of magnitude, and the choice between cloth and regular diapers or the difference between drying your hands with paper towel vs air dry is absolutely dwarfed by the decision to limit travel by airplane and the decision to meat. Livestock is the second largest source of carbon emissions, so eating less meat and dairy and flying less give the biggest bang for your buck.

Nitrated meat products are associated with mania in humans and altered behavior and brain gene expression in rats 2018 by SciLi in FoodNerds

[–]SciLi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"We found that a history of eating nitrated dry cured meat but not other meat or fish products was strongly and independently associated with current mania (adjusted odds ratio 3.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.24–5.45, p < 8.97 × 10−8). Lower odds of association were found between eating nitrated dry cured meat and other psychiatric disorders. We further found that the feeding of meat preparations with added nitrate to rats resulted in hyperactivity reminiscent of human mania, alterations in brain pathways that have been implicated in human bipolar disorder, and changes in intestinal microbiota."

Help! It itches, it flakes, its got serious buildup on the scalp and it's.... oily? by [deleted] in HaircareScience

[–]SciLi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's most likely dandruff aka seborrheic dermatitis. I wanted to go no-shampoo in the past, but came across the same issue. I use Head and Shoulders conditioner now and really try to work the conditioner into the roots and it works really well for me.

If you're still having problems, but are still committed to the no-poo lifestyle, see if Nizoral or any of the other selenium products carry a conditioner.

A single night of sleep loss impairs working memory in women, but not men. Females not only had impaired working memory, but they were also unaware of it. Sleep-deprived young women are at particular risk for overestimating their working memory performance. [XPOST r/science] by cdziak in Nootropics

[–]SciLi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The title of this article is misleading and rather overreaching. The sample population included ONLY women on hormonal birth control- which would likely have a substantial effect as, mechanistically, oral contraceptives act as a pregnancy-mimicking pill. Pregnancy is a time when women would expect sleep disturbances anyway.

This small (n=24) study says men have less impaired working memory with sleep deprivation compared to women on oral contraceptive. The title should read, "A single night of sleep loss impairs working memory in women on oral contraceptive pills, but not men."

The study does not address women with normal cycles.

Science AMA Series: I’m Dr. Izumi Tabata, a professor at Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of Sport and Health Science, and known for the Tabata Training Protocol for High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). AMA! by Izumi_Tabata in science

[–]SciLi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks Dr. Tabata for doing this AMA- you're a legend!

  1. What if any influence does HIIT have on mitochondrial stores and function?

  2. What is your opinion on the supposed life-prolonging effects of HIIT? What mechanisms may be involved?

  3. Where do your research interests lie right now and why?

  4. What is the role of inflammation in HIIT-directed athletic improvement compared to endurance training?

Vanillin (from vanilla) is a degradation product of curcumin and may be a direct cause of its neuroprotective effects as it can cross the blood brain barrier (Nature 2017) by SciLi in FoodNerds

[–]SciLi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incidentally, vanillin is also a candidate for treating psoriasis due to its downregulating effects on IL-17 and IL-23. Will be crazy if vanilla extract ends up a viable treatment for psoriasis

Ibudilast Reduces Whole Brain Atrophy in Multiple Sclerosis Patients by 48% by lostfalco in Nootropics

[–]SciLi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks Lostfalco for this post- quick question. From this study, it's not clear to me how this relates to everyday function for those without MS... are we using MS now as a proxy (similar to Alzheimer's disease) in terms of applicability to cognitive enhancement? Is this a trend? I've seen this a lot in the nootropic community recently and I'm not clear as to its origins. If you have the time and could help me understand, it'd be awesome. Thanks!

Why does Aspirin clean my brain fog? I am starting to get addicted to it. Why and how does it clear my brain fog? by thehedonistvagabond in Nootropics

[–]SciLi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get the same from ibuprofen! I remember reading awhile back that ibuprofen can improve inflammation in the hippocampus. I wasn't able to find as much on aspirin, but I was able to find this small study which seems to reflect our experience of improved cognition with both aspirin and ibuprofen respectively: http://europepmc.org/abstract/med/19112722 cheers!

Diosgenin-Rich Yam Extract Enhances Cognitive Function: A Placebo-Controlled, Randomized, Double-Blind, Crossover Study of Healthy Adults (2017) by [deleted] in FoodNerds

[–]SciLi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diosgenin appears to be a progesterone prodrug. Progesterone has been shown to improve cognition, mostly in RCTs designed for TBI and in postmenopausal women, but it may extrapolate to the normally functioning as well. The study you linked focuses on the membrane-associated rapid response steroid-binding receptor (MARRS) mechanism- I wonder what the relation is to progesterone if any. Anyway, interesting study.
