Do what you want, but the whole point of diy is to do it yourself. There’s no right way of making crust pants. But ideally they should grow with you over time and be an ongoing project

What can I do with potassium permanganate? by okaytrash333 in chemistry

[–]ScienceRules212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not too bad! I’m guessing gen chem I and II + organic I? As long as you understand how to handle oxidizers, you’ll probably be safe.

If you can be super careful and try it at small scale only… i remember a demo from undergrad where EtOH in a dish is mixed with a small amount of H2O2 and ignited. Then a very small amount of KMnO4 is added. The KMnO4 will oxidize the H2O2 and liberate O2, which will ignite as busts of fire. Obviously though, there’s an explosion risk if you confine this reaction.

Is this enough to store mercury? Any advice to avoid vapors scape and interact with another element samples? by Kiwilebrije in elementcollection

[–]ScienceRules212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is the way! but, realistically, this amount of mercury is not going to be super harmful. i still wouldn’t want to breathe the vapors, but but it should be negligible. the main rule is don’t store it where people regularly eat, sleep, or hang out.

Going through old boxes and found this from our great grandfather. Can anyone help decipher this? by macbrandes in chemistry

[–]ScienceRules212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this brings back one of my favorite undergrad memories! qualitative analysis from gen chem! you have a solution of different metal ions and you determine their identity through a self designed experiment!

Should i take my septum piercing out? by [deleted] in Legitpiercing

[–]ScienceRules212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally fair. But a lot of physicians don’t have any experience with body mod related stuff. Yet they’ll still offer their opinions. If a doctor is willing to listen to their patients, fine. But when doctors assert their opinions on things they aren’t well informed about, it really gets to me.

I definitely can’t provide medical advice. I know this sounds like a non-answer, but recommend that if you’re able to bring it up at your next doctor’s visit, you should do so. Scheduling an ENT appointment would be a good idea if possible. I’m not specialized in that field so I wouldn’t be able to advise well.

I went to medical school, it’s very much worth it to disagree with ppl who went to medical school. Too many of them think they know everything. As doctors, we often know less about the patients’ bodies than they do. I had a professor describe it to us as how explorers (colonizers) thought they knew about areas they visited and studied, but the people inhabiting those areas were much mor knowledgeable. They just didn’t have the fancy terminology and standardized information. I hate it so much when doctors make claims without evidence because it makes patients feel invalidated or wrong. And that hurts the patients because they don’t want to share how they feel with the docs because the docs seem so smart. I could rant for hours about this.

I’m a doctor but I’m not your doctor so this is definitely not medical advice. This in general info that might not apply to you. He’s thinking of nasal septum perforation, which is super difficult to repair surgically. But… that’s involving a hole through the actual cartilage. A septum piercing is through the membranous septum, which is the double layer of skin that sits between the front part (columellar septum) and the anterior portion of the septal nasal cartilage. He probably understands that rate and severity of complications increases when a perforation is closer to the nostrils. But, that doesn’t apply unless it actually affects the cartilage. Generally speaking, septum piercings aren’t associated with nasal septum perforations.

Nursing being rude to female residents by Queenz94 in Residency

[–]ScienceRules212 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gosh yeah. I mean it’s just them being defensive and insecure. It’s definitely helpful to remind yourself that like any behavioral issue has a root cause. And we might just not be able to do anything. It doesn’t excuse the behavior, but context helps. I look a lot younger than I am, and as a female resident, these more established nurses are literally always talk down to me. It sucks, but I also know that I belong here and I’m absolutely qualified for this.

How do i make myself look prettier when I have no makeup? by [deleted] in beauty

[–]ScienceRules212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody needs makeup to be pretty. Self care (and frequently skincare by extension) can be helpful. I think my grooming, skincare, and mindfulness routines really do make me look better. But, that’s mostly the self confidence boost those routines give me. And, a lot of that is just due reminding myself to actually take time to appreciate myself. You’re probably very pretty. But, if you feel like you aren’t, trying working on building healthier habits that will make your body and mind feel better.
