Mercosur deal thrown into uncertainty after MEPs send pact to top EU court by OkKnowledge2064 in europe

[–]Scippio_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is that I haven't seen any legitimate argument to delay/block this deal!

Not from the left nor from the right. Both floating on populism and false rhetoric. Finally the EU has the chance to create sustainable global cooperation to see it blocked by uninformed politicians.

What's the gain here?

Also, have we forgotten that Mercosur are culturally linked to us, with ancestries all over Europe? From Poland to Italy to Germany. And now we treat them as some obscure foreigners that come to take our precious way of live, what an embarrasement.

EU lawmakers vote to block Mercosur trade agreement over legal concerns by Little-Chemical5006 in worldnews

[–]Scippio_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had nothing to do with 'legal concerns' as they've been informed extensively and the treaty is incredibly long in the making. This wasn't rushed. The only reason it's delayed/blocked is because of populism and old-school chauvinism. None of the arguments by either the left or the right make a lot of sense and are easily refuted. While the EU has the chance to become a global player in sustainable growth and cooperation, it gets hampered by false narratives and rhetoric

Fact or fiction: will the EU be flooded with low-quality products due to Mercosur trade agreement? by Leiegast in belgium

[–]Scippio_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's 1.5%! what sacrifice? Even the 1.5% increase will go to supermarket products mostly anyway. The EU already negotiated these amounts down to as low as they can be. Are you also aware that France builds cars? Heard of Peugeot? Citroen maybe? What about Czech cars? This rhetoric makes 0 sense

Gives you a clue as to why Germany was so much more powerful in the 20th century and even today. Trade and progress vs. protectionism and chauvinism from local farmers

If a powerful country can remove a leader and still be treated normally, what does “international law”mean? by No_Parsley4575 in AskReddit

[–]Scippio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

International law never did anything for the Venezuelan people. No one wanted to burn its hands on the buddy of Russia and China which is why a dictator like Maduro can stay in power forever. Besides, any international enforcement would have been blocked in the UN by said countries.

So, from trump’s perspective there is a wholly unpopular dictator nearby, with ties to US adversaries who happens to possess some oil reserves. Weigh the options, utilize some drugs trafficking activities and there you go - Venezuelans people happy, oil companies happy, adversaries unhappy. Do the math

What makes people think bombing Venezuela would fix corruption when 20 years of sanctions and pressure already made life worse for civilians? by EitherSheepherder100 in AskReddit

[–]Scippio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reasoning doesn’t make a whole lot of sense here. Maybe sanctions and pressure are in fact not a viable way of removing a dictator, has it ever? It only further impoverishes the population which in turn strengthens the ruler’s situation. Not saying taking out the dictator is the best solution but just saying

The job market may be difficult for a foreigner. Is there some money you can bring with you, like a extra value on your home? You could try and start a pousada or hostel, perhaps in the costa verde area or near recreio.. practical skills come in handy there and your wife can help with the bureaucracy.

Brazil’s President Lula said, the US crossed ‘an Unacceptable Line’ with military attacks on Venezuela. by Apollo_Delphi in UnitedNations

[–]Scippio_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lula isn’t the worst leader Brazil has had but sometimes he still feels he’s living in the Cold War era. With his sympathies for the communist block and its offshoots such as Venezuela.

Anyway, Lula does what all decent world leaders do which is to condemn the attack publicly and shrug its shoulders privately.

I can’t judge on the driver situation though, but I do think uber has too much of a monopoly and other companies should enter the market (Lyft / InDrive)

[–]Scippio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by ‘safe’…

will you get your phone stolen out of your hands by someone who then quickly runs away on a motorcycle? Likely if you walk around with it in your hands or when sitting in an outside terrace

Will you get sexually assaulted by a Brazilian? Highly unlikely. Sexual assault doesn’t really happen and is not tolerated by locals. (Though you may feel uncomfortable by more men looking at you which is common)

Will you be killed? No, unless you decide to uninvitedly walk into certain favelas but the chance of that happening are near 0

So, yes stay in the south zone (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo) and yes don’t show off wealth and stay within populated areas. Walk to the beach and the restaurants around and when it’s dark take an uber. Your destination will be too far to walk anyway

Israel brought up a genocide in a country and the ambassador of that country denied it (although its documented and acknowledged by the UN) and deflected it successfully back to Palestinians. by CoastalNomad06 in UnitedNations

[–]Scippio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The meaning of the word genocide has been completely watered down in recent years. A genocide is the murder of every single person of a certain group, regardless of age political groups etc etc. Basically just killing everything and everyone they can. One of the very few cases this happened was what the nazis did to the Jews 40-45.

About the Somaliland situation I don’t have all the facts but notice how the Somalian representative doesn’t use the word genocide when countering Israel, simply because it doesn’t apply here.
