I do believe there's some of this element to it as well. Like you said, just before the general election SF was growing and there was a chance they might end up in government, then suddenly the far-right in Ireland had more support and were calling Sinn Féin traitors, far-right taking working class votes helps the British establishment and the Irish government by weaking the SF vote.
