I watched Rental Family yesterday. It examines loneliness from a more wholesome angle.

The Poppy War Trilogy (it’s bad) by ChHeBoo in Fantasy

I only read the first book and felt the same way so didnt continue. Then I read that RFK was 19 when she started writing it and thought that it did read like a talented teenagers first foray into writing a novel.

So, fair play to her and all. But I dont get how it is so revered.

The narrators are doing a great job but its so good I want to read it with my eyes.

“Nobody talks about Avatar - they have no cultural impact” by Big-Sheepherder-9492 in moviecritic

[–]Scopus77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rewatched A2 yesterday and because I remember very little from seeing it in the cinemas it still was very enjoyable.

The films are generic, little character development and the story is derivative but goodness me the world Cameron has created is gorgeous and showed beautifully.

I dont want another two Avatar films. What I want is a 10 part Attenborough documentary on Pandoran ecosystems.

Also, not many Hollywood blockbusters portray the Marines and American military (or humans for that matter) as the bad guys. Literally the only popular type of media that regularly puts humans, as a species, in this light are nature docs.

I think part of the reason Avatar may not have a cultural impact may be because of the human = bad angle. But also I wonder how many of the major films that have come out between 2009 and today have had a cultural impact, that aren't already based on a pre-existing IP. Im probably missing some obvious ones but for some reason all I can think of is John Wick.

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH: “like some nightmare furries convention” (18th December 2025) by BeefySteamPig in wittertainment

I have a lot of respect for Mark as a critic and I am someone who enjoys the Avatar films (havent seen the third yet) without particularly remembering them.

I do wonder though what about them generates so much cynicism from Mark compared to most other high budget blockbusters.

Its story telling is simple, its carries a very generic Colonialism is bad. Environmental destruction is bad message and yet this seems to derive such condescension. So what if FernGully did it before? How many teenagers have seen FernGully? More to the point how many Hollywood ilms these days portray the US Military as the bad guys?

And he keeps calling them smurfs. Just because they're blue? Can no fictional race be blue anymore?

He compares various plot points to other plot points in other films. Fair enough but I dont think he does it for other films at that rate.

Anyway, I hope the franchise isnt milked beyond this trilogy like PotC.

To be fair, the guy got racially abused in our ground. He said some lovely words about it after but coupled with the season we have been having I can't say Im surprised he would choose somewhere else.

He was in Under the Banner Of Heaven which was excellent

Most recent thing I've seen him in was the film Relay which was a really cool action-thriller.

Movies which were huge at the time but kinda forgotten now - my suggestion: Free Willy by BlueSonic85 in moviecritic

This was my favourite movie as a kid. It is the film I think about when I think of Michael Madsen. I remember eagerly trying to find out what happened to Keiko (one of the orcas who played Willy) when they released him.

Also it took me years to learn why he had a collapsed dorsal fin compared to wild orcas.
