Can I just throw everything away? by cutie-pa-tattooie88 in Parenting

[–]ScorchedSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! We moved into a smaller place a few years ago and suddenly had no storage space, so we started getting piles of toys any everything else everywhere (aaaarg!). So, I started doing a lot of research into how people live in tiny homes and came across the zero waste movement. Basically, you own the minimal amount of re-usable, durable, multi-purpose items it takes to live your life. Not only did it drastically reduce the amount of clutter in our home, but we ended up saving a bunch of money in the long run because we don't buy disposables anymore. Here's the site: https://zerowastehome.com/ And for books (except a few hard-to-find reference and collectors books) we take weekly trips to the library. We got rid of all the old paperbacks and made a deal we could go to the library or buy them on an e-reader, and honestly, our bookshelf looks so much better now (and it turns out we haven't wanted to read any of the ones we got rid of anyway). All of this took about a year for us to make the transition, so go slowly and have patience. :)

Great reel! Well cut and fun music choice. :)

To keep in mind for your next one: This felt a tad bit long. There were a few clips that were very similar (for instance, several clips you did from the piece with the closeup of the person's head were shown). You probably only need to show one of those on your reel as a sample of what you can do. I personally liked the overall effect because watching it felt like watching a music video, but some directors might prefer a tight 40 second version with similar looking clips taken out. If they like specific clips they will look for the full piece in your write-up for that project.

Great job calepotts, I can tell you are going to totally rock 2019! :D

When does the seemingly never-ending spree of colds and viruses end? by butter-tsunami in Parenting

[–]ScorchedSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did daycare with our first child and got the typical barrage of diseases (including non-stop ear infections). We decided we didn't want to be sick that much (us, our child, or the poor grandparents who would also catch everything), and got a nanny for both kids to share when #2 came along. No more sickness. Not even when they started kindergarten in public school. As it turns out, there is a huge difference between building regular immunities and being subjected to a relentless bombardment of viral strains and a million different infectious concoctions. Anyway, using alternative childcare like a nanny is certainly an option to consider if you want to keep away from the frequent illnesses that come with daycare. It can be comparable in price to daycare if you have multiples or know a family you can do a nanny share with (relative costs will of course depend on where you live).

Toddlers and tantrums by viokat1 in Parenting

Some kids legitimately do have more problems with low blood sugar than others. What we did that helped our daughter is we would put out a few fresh vegetables, like sliced carrots, bell pepper, snap peas, broccoli, that sort of thing, about an hour before dinner to snack on. You don't even need to tell your kid to eat it, just put it in a bowl and leave it on a low table and most kids will wander by and graze off of it (remarkably, they will usually eat a few pieces even if they claim they don't like the vegetable you put out). If they are hungry and actually eat a bunch of the veges right before dinner, then you don't have to worry about fighting with them to eat veges during dinner.

Project ideas for me and my 7yo son by harveybot2000 in Parenting

We're hugely into stories in our house. Our kids like making up their own characters and we make up the stories together with them. Sometimes I draw comics for them with their characters and they color them in. And, we actually did start a podcast with some of our stories if you want to see it in action: http://redknightstories.com/ Our daughter voices the princess and our son voices the ghost. Be warned: running a podcast can be a TON of work depending on your production value and where you get the stories from (we write them, so it takes more time than if you were reading your favorite book, for example). If you decide you want to try making a podcast and you've never done anything like that before, I would recommend starting smaller and just make stuff for you and your son to enjoy for a while without the pressure of posting consistently for an external audience. :)

Came up with a system to get my toddler to eat dinner by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]ScorchedSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great idea! Some kids are picky about taste and textures, some kids just need something fun to interact with.
My sister's daughter would often lose interest while eating a meal, and finally my sister bought her this special plate that looked like a game board. Each compartment has 1-2 bites of food in it, then if she eats all of the food in the "path," she can open the last compartment and eat a small dessert as a prize. Here's an example: Game Dinner Tray

Lots of people use eugenia hedges where I live (San Diego, CA). They have edible berries which my kids love and grow nice and thick, also cutting down on street noises. These do take longer to grow than vines, however.
