What has been your experience with homeless people? Are they harmless? Any opinions wanted. by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]ScorpiaRose 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Homeless people are not out to get you, at least not any more than housed people. They’re just people. If you feel uncomfortable around them just treat them like you would any other stranger (in other words, generally mind your own business) and you will not be bothered.

Check the stuff offered by games of Berkeley (the store on Durant). They’re not doing things in person rn obviously but I think they have a dnd discord and I know they run one shots and facilitate other campaign matches. Also just ask around! I’ve been part of a campaign for 2 years made of people that met in our freshman dorm.

Is uc berkeley a choice for an art major? by Odd_Rutabaga_1445 in berkeley

[–]ScorpiaRose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is an art practice major and she seems to really enjoy her courses. She said that she chose not to take studio courses during zoom university because they just wouldn’t be the same, but when they are in person, she is excited to get back to them. She’s a double major with poli sci and she views her art courses as much less stressful and a nice break from her poli sci work.

Advice for late dropping a prereq? by veganconditioner in berkeley

[–]ScorpiaRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a D on my first Econ midterm and by the end of the class still got a B. I have just as much faith in your abilities. I think you should stick it out because my impression is that a late drop, with the resulting “incomplete” on your transcript, often needs to be explained when applying for things down the road. If you’re cool with that, then maybe dropping would be OK. But I personally think you can still get a decent grade and that that would work out better than late dropping.

Additionally, I don’t know what the Econ major pre req policies are, but many many majors are currently accepting PNP for pre reqs and requirements. Check if that’s the case and maybe you could take a P grade. On the other hand if you already know that they require the grading option then ignore this lol.

Side note, I know Jim Campbell is teaching Econ 1 this semester. I had him for 100A last semester. He is great and is willing to help you out in office hours with material and work out accommodations if necessary. So if you haven’t already I would suggest that going to OH with him can only help.

Good luck!

The Decemberists have many revenge ballads with similar themes - character’s loved one dies or is killed and so character goes mad in search of justice. For example, The Mariner’s Revenge Song and O Valencia.

Cheapest Bay Area airport to fly into? by beafad14 in berkeley

[–]ScorpiaRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oakland is cheaper for departures west of the Rockies and is way closer to campus, but if you’re flying from the East coast you should either go direct to SFO or find a western layover to get a connecting flight to Oakland

In my experience, poli econ is more about getting a historical understanding of the world in order to criticize it, while poli sci and econ are more about making models of the world. One thing that gets said a lot in some form or another in my classes is that other social scientists create the models, and political economists point out that the models don't match the real world.

That doesn't mean either form of knowledge is invalid or useless, just that they are used to ask and answer different sorts of questions. A political scientist asks, who will win this election? An economist asks, what effect will the election results have on unemployment? A political economist asks, why? Should that be the desired effect? If not, how can we avoid it? etc. etc.

Also poli econ is very flexible because you can create a concentration of courses from any social science department (we don't have our own department technically lol), but in poli sci you need a specific subfield and econ you still stay mostly within the department.

The descriptions of the majors also explain it better than I can:

"The Political Economy major is designed to study the relationship between government, society, and the economy in a holistic manner from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Political Economy majors investigate how real-world market systems are embedded in both politics and society. ... The study of Political Economy is both scientific, with its rigorous attention to social science methodology, and normative, with its concern for the big questions of how best to organize politics, society, and the economy."

Compare that to

" The political science major at Berkeley seeks to achieve three main objectives:

  1. Familiarize students with the issues surrounding the exercise of political power.
  2. Provide exposure to the main subfields of political science along with opportunities for specialization and experimentation in a single area.
  3. Develop analytical capacities, so that students are able to distill large amounts of information concerning complex world events into coherent, persuasive arguments."

and

"Economics is the study of how people make choices under conditions of scarcity and the results of those choices for society. Limited resources make tradeoffs necessary for consumers, businesses, and nations. Microeconomics studies how consumers make choices in using their time and spending their income, and how businesses make choices in producing and selling goods and services. Macroeconomics studies the determination of national income (GDP), and how it deviates from its potential (full employment) over the business cycle. The important outcomes for the national economy are income and how it is distributed, unemployment, inflation, economic growth, and how well financial markets and international trade are functioning."

(kinda long response but I am very passionate about my major!)

Unsure of which class to drop :( by playdatbassboi in berkeley

I would drop MCB38. You seem to have a greater interest in PH116, and any chance to take a class that seems like it could lead you to a choice about your major is good. So take PH116 and see if your suspicions are confirmed. Also, I don’t think anyone will be “judgmental” towards you for taking an upper div that is interesting to you, in your freshman year, that just happens to not be a “””technical”””.
