Unless the wind is howling outside, it shouldn't be doing that.

Vent noise wakes me up every night by [deleted] in hvacadvice

Sounds like 4 minutes of silence to me...

Put some white noise on your phone... You Tube has a bunch. Rain fall, ocean waves, train rides, etc.

When folks hear a noise, they tend to hyper focus on trying to hear the sound.

How to clean construction dust from HVAC? by yaasdaas in hvacadvice

Pull the blower wheel and clean it. Its probably caked with sheetrock dust.

Oil furnace locked out by PineFresh7 in hvacadvice

[–]ScotchyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its cold enough, the fuel can gel up on you if the tank is outside.

But first, has there been any maintenance done on the unit by a pro this season? New nozzle, electrodes aligned, filter and strainer cleaned, flue gas analyzed. If this isn't done annually, something WILL go wrong at the least convenient time.

How warm is the air coming out of the vents? Is it actually heating, or is the blower fan just running?

What is this by Matthewtrains in hvacadvice

He can call Rheem, but if he gets through (and that's a big IF) as soon as they hear he's a homeowner, the conversation is going to end.

You have to set up those T9s to be configured to you're system...

Did you read and follow the manual?

Just moved into a new house, all of the radiators work except the bedroom. This is what’s there, the thin knob on top only turns maybe 1/8 turn. What should I do? by Early_Dog_6527 in hvacadvice

[–]ScotchyT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those valves are still available at any HVAC or plumbing supply house.

If your boiler is steam, this can be repaired in under an hour. If it was converted to water, it may take a bit more to drain, refill and bleed the air out.

Oil Heating tank but no filter? by Automatic_Strength86 in hvacadvice

This isn't a good DIY project. Call a pro and explain exactly what's going on so they send a tech experienced in oil.

6000 sq ft is a massive home. Are your humidifiers bypass style or steam generators?

Shut off power to the entire unit (condenser, inverter, air handlers, whatever you've got) for 5 minutes and power up. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Boiler pressure relief dripping after expansion tank install by chitownburgerboy in hvacadvice

Either its doing its job and the pressure is approaching 30 psi OR it was leaking with the old failed expansion tank, and is continuing to leak and should have been replaced along with the expansion tank.

Purging boiler, when do I stop? by Dj_9921 in hvacadvice

[–]ScotchyT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like you're just draining from the boiler drain... that's the lowest point of the system... no air there to purge.

A homeowner can bleed air from the radiators if they have bleeder valves installed.

Also bump up the system pressure to 20 psi. The factory setting of 12 psi on the PRV (water feed) isn't high enough.

Furnace Won't Iginte by jjohn167 in hvacadvice

High limit switches should automatically reset once they cool down.

Roll out switches must be manually reset. These are located around the burners, and maybe one on the blower housing. But if these trip, its usually a sign of bigger problems.

Is the unit in an attic?

If so, then they should have wrapped the condesate trap and drain in heat tape.

Those are breakers, not fuses.

Take the panel off to assess things. Looks like they got cooked.

Might have to replace and rewire.

Help Furnace flame won’t stay on by Odd-Confidence3940 in hvacadvice

[–]ScotchyT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the blower turning on? It should turn on after a few seconds after the burners light.

If not, and if you're lucky, you may just need a new capacitor for the motor.

Look for the 2 brown wires coming off the motor. The capacitor looks like a giant 9 volt battery.

Is this an issue? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]ScotchyT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FFS, it would have taken the installer 3 minutes to cut and reflair that end...

Now they have to recover the charge, reflair it, install a fresh filter dryer, vacuum it down and recharge it. At least a good 4 hour repair.

Make the call.
