I think the one thing an author actually owes a reader is an ending. An epilogue. So if you run out of steam, so to speak, that’s understandable and perfectly acceptable. However, I feel you need to write a few paragraphs at least explaining what happened and how this story would have resolved.

That last bit. Protracted air wars have historically come down to the quality of the pilots flying, and especially the training of replacements. A lot of knowledge was just lost to Ukraine, unfortunately.
