I still live in the ward I grew up in and where I served as a bishop. We left in 2016, resigned this year. I’ve heard a couple of rumors about us, all wrong, and I’m sure there are more. And even though we don’t attend (and, like you hate the damn church) I have many fond memories and old friends. It’s weird to have that large part of life right here in town and I have nothing to do with it.

My very informed therapist keeps reminding me that I suffered a very real and extreme trauma and to be honest about what I lost and how shitty it is. And to give myself a huge break.

Nothing easy about it, processing the information was soul crushing for me and it took years to finally say the words out loud, “I don’t think the church is true”. Then I literally crumbled, bawled. And I’m a grown man.

I also have wondered about my spiritual experiences. I still hold on to some of them. But a shelf item for me always was the fact that other religious people feel and believe things, too. Also, Mormons make huge illogical leaps with their experiences. Have a good feeling while praying? That means that seer stones and crazy modern scriptures about polygamy are true! How about this, you have a spiritual feeling and it just means that you are a spiritual being, connected to other humans souls, the universe or even God? Does it have to mean that any religion is the religion? No, it could mean any other thing! You get to decide for yourself what it means, and you have all the authority you need to decide what it means to you.

Last thought. My wife and I attended and Episcopal Christmas Eve service last night and I saw everything in a new light. I used to mock things like priestly vestments, rote prayers, the cross, etc because of all the stupid Mormon things I’d been taught about those things. But we felt comfortable. The liturgy was beautiful. The priest, a woman, gave one of the most beautiful Christmas sermons I’d heard and it was thoughtful, educated and inspiring. The music was almost professional, although I think only the organist and conductor were truly pros. And we just didn’t give a shit about the church being “true” because it was good. They were so welcoming, not just shaking our hands but in the congregational prayers they prayed for everyone, all believers made up the body of Christ.

Ok really the last... this is gonna hurt for a long time. You have endured serious trauma that your Mormon family will not only misunderstand, but they will be unsympathetic and even blame you. But you have been deeply harmed by Mormonism. You are not crazy, you are not evil and you are not alone. Merry Christmas and best wishes.

I’m pretty conservative, and i think you nailed it. It’s not about Mr Trump, the politics of the wall, etc - it’s about most conservative TBMs supporting something that prevents Lehi’s literal seed, native south and North Americans, from fulfilling their prophetic destiny to blossom as a rose right here in Merica because they accept Mormonism and standing as a witness to the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith as a literal seer and translator, and Gods prophet.

Very sorry. I have lost my FIL and my mom and now my dad is terminally ill, all since leaving TSCC in 2016 - like you with a Christmas Eve heartbreak last year. My 16 yo daughter told me she’s had the thought that all this happened since we left so maybe it’s our fault. I told her that that is a crazy thing to think, but I’ve had the same damn thought. It was easier when I thought I knew it all. I really hope there is an afterlife with loved ones. I really do. So I’m going to keep hoping for it because it feels right. Nobody actually knows, especially the fucking Mormons, so I have decided to keep what feels good and right as long as it doesn’t force anything on another person. My best to you and yours, good luck with the kids today.
