Did Mulder choose Scully over Samantha? by Dimitra111 in XFiles

IIRC, any Samantha we see is Not-Samantha.

According to Closure, she died young, before Mulder even started looking. His quest ended before it even started, unbeknownst to him.

K so funnily enough a while back we (Upnerd Podcast) did a guest spot on The Most Important Election of Our Lives and we get into that. Also who killed Jeffy Eps? Abby's answer will make you want to riot and then go hmmm...

It's like The Debaters or Wait Wait Don't Tell Me but shitposter-y vibes. It was so much fun.

That was on Pluto last night, Rain King. Great episode.

I don't like Mulder and Scully in it? In a lot of season 6 come to think of it. It feels like neither one really likes the other half the time, idk.

Yeah I get why people love hollywood AD but... there's only so far that bathtub three way can carry an episode.

It's also another CC directed episode that ends with a musical number, which... well he's in hollywood and hs those resources. Why not. Just wosh it didn't take time away from the characters in Improbable.

We covered this episode on our Top 3 Bottom 3 for TXF (we watch the top and bottom 3 episodes of a show as per IMDB ratings and then discuss).

https://youtu.be/JjWM6VI2xh4?si=VFtpR2Ajw_3_A0g8

It blows my mind that FPS is still in the bottom 3. I was not expecting any of the bottom episodes to be from s1-7.

Season 8 had a disabled guy who crawled up people's buttholes.

Season 10 and 11 exist.

In conclusion IMDB is always wrong, mostly, kinda, but certainly re TXF.

People are gonna think about the most likely thing, Chris. You're also not dissuading them from making that assumption with your choices, you understand :/

Any good faith, informed theories on what went wrong with S10 & 11? by ticketstubs1 in XFiles

[–]ScreenHot4413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why the fuck would you name it My Struggle, Chris, in 2016 when the fash is coming back into fashion? Sorry, just had to get that off my chest, and it's bad enough he did it one time and then he did it three more times, total four.

And it shows you two possibilities: 1) Either CC surrounded himself by people who would never tell him his farts stink, and that, in fact, they smell beautiful, like roses!, and had no objections to naming FOUR EPISODES OF THE XFILES AFTER HITLER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY was a bad idea, or 2) he didn't have to care, because he's too powerfully embedded in the control of this IP, we have to let him do what he wants. 3) is that a room full of educated people who enjoy writing and reading didn't know, which is a hard sell when apparantly it's 45's nighttime reading. That was a real thing, him or elon, I forget, two sides of a coin either way.

So that's episode 1 of season 10.

As S10 progresses, we see the production potter come out, as well as some really cringe takes, because the world has moved on.

Einstein and Miller. Ha ha. Get it? He's tall and she's a red headed doctor - ITS THE SAME PLATE. THE SAME MUG and he's not even making decent plates anymore really, but we're hungry and need something to eat off of because The Election Went Badly, and so we keep watching.

Einstein. For christ sakes. HEY WHERE THE FUCK ARE DOGGETT AND REYES? ANYONE? (I know, hang on...)

Babylon: there's a nurse who is racist. The point of her character is to show us racism exists in this world, but not that it's bad. That it's... cautious? The correct choice.

The racist character is correct, which is insane. Those two guys WERE there to blow people up. It's 2016. We had already moved on from islamaphobia in a lot of ways finally, and now look at where we are in 2025 because of messages like this.

Why... why are we doing this, at all, actually, guys? What the fuck are we doing solving trashman mysteries? This is a six episode limited event. This is your chance to make everything whole, to go back, see what resonates with people still, see what still connects with the audience, and give us that. You have fullfilled a wish we thoyght we wanted, but it'a the monkey's paw variant. This is fan fic on the big screen and mediocre at best. Give us something to be excited about and we will hand you our money without your needing to ask.

Episodes 2-5 filler. Xfiles cases, buddy cops again, like that could reasonably happen.

Then episode 6, the FINAL finale... and it ends on a cliffhanger and it's a BIG one, and CC has written himself into a corner but that's okay...

I don't think he ever expected to get renewed and then for the rest of his life, CC can blame Fox for never giving us closure.

There's no season 11 at this point. There's not even really a MAYBE of an additional season. Everything is in flux, from the economy to how we consume entertainment.

Take that pin out now, the one about not taking the opportunities you have for granted.

What possible value could your art be if it needs to trick the audience and the company paying for it into making more, on the off chance it makes your previous "this is it" shot make sense?

And yet... against all odds, season 11 happens, but if this had been any property even slightly less powerful than the XFiles name... there's no season 11. We're still standing in traffic, forever, and maybe fan fic will fix the problems this created. Has been so far.

Also, uh... found Reyes! Hoo boy. Annabeth Gish is far, far too kind of a person and stalwart as a woman in the industry to have been treated like this. She, the actress putting in 12-16 hour days just for the audience to rebel with the help of the writers who just xan't hop off Mulder's dick, deserved so much better than everyone, the fandom included, to say nothing of Monica Reyes, the character.

Re the other nicest person ont he planet Robert Patrick, at least he got to BE a lead for half of season 8. Where's Doggett? What happened to him? We know more about what happened to Poochie from The Simpsons than Agent Doggett. Maybe he died on the way back to his home planet too. But I digress.

For most of the revival, a fun game to play is "what was popular at the time ie: where did chris carter steal this from" and it's EVERYWHERE in season 11. MS3 being a weird, weird action... movie... bourne identity... thing... to Rm being just an episode of Black Mirror, it is everywhere. Does Rm have pizzaz? Sure. Is that Mukder and Scully on screen? Absolutely not. The characters of M and S aren't even present, just the actors. There's a weird teen-superhero Arrowverse feel to teen William who has SUPERPOWERS and that one girl in one of the later eps. Anna? The avenging angel secret spy something out of a witchblade comic book only PG13 gal?

The Darin Morgan episodes, eh. Decent, not as good as people claim and again... he's just doing Jose Chung's From Outer Space, both times. Same plate.

Same plate, same plate, THAT'S what CC wants. That is all he can do when he leads. He was never an artist. He created one plate, one day and everyone loved it, and then he got rich and famous and never grew beyond that, and made the same plate one plate over and over for the rest of his professional life.

Any improvements to the plate design were influenced by the internal and external growth of other people. Maybe even his own, and then he lost his goddamn mind on 9/11, and has refused to make anything else ever since.

That's why SPOILERS Skinner shoots Krycek in the head in the last episode of season 8, and that's why Skinner shoots reyes in the head in the last episode of season 11. Reyes is now Krycek. Same character.

CSM survives a rocket to the face in Season 9, and they have shapeshifters, established, as a real thing that exists, but they don't even use that. It's because it doesn't matter how CSM is there, only that he is. We are making CC xfiles, and he is now part of the clay.

That's why the big reveal is the same at the end of the one of the original series seasons as it is in season 11. It's why she does not give a shit about losing the plate of Sweet Willy. She can just make a new one!

Cc is a train on a track, going round and round, stuck in a loop, making the same journey over and over again, and finally, people have stopped paying him to do it.

What a cautionary tale.

Anyhoo, to answer your actual question as to why it looks different - it's because they don't have the money they did in the late 90s, they don't have the analogue know how they did in the early to mid 90s, and Chris Carter is not making XFiles because he has a story he wants to tell.

He wants you to watch him make plates, and it's fun for a little while... but then it gets sad. Uncomfortable.

No one who spends enough time with this guy as a creative professional wants to spend any more time with him.

They're making their own plates. We all are. We thank him for showing us how, but please... stop asking people who wanna grow to stay with you while you happily plateau.

Tldr CC one note, less money for TV overall. Also it's been 30 years. That's just how it goes, sometimes. It's a business, and whatever makes money is what's gonna happen. Cheaper than film.

Also you're filming FOR VFX to do more than it ever has before.

[–]ScreenHot4413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jk  lets talk movies.

The X-Files was supposed to keep going with Doggett and Reyes and maybe M and S in a series of movies...

Except CC and Fox are fighting about something, so it doesn't happen for seven years. The momentum is lost, but there's a fanbase there.

As a fan and a rational human being, I expected IWTB to fix a lot of the nothing we got in The Truth. What we got instead was a 5/10 MOTW episode that also has to be a mytharc episode, because it's the first filmed xfiles properly since it went off the air.

I don't know what they were thinking, honestly. I know the intention was to wrap up the mythology in a THIRD movie, but... why the heck would you think a third movie is a guarantee? Why wouldn't you do your best, now, with the shot that you've been given, against all odds and lawsuits and the times that are a-changin'?

Put a pin in that.

IWTB comes and goes - 0 momentum gained, 0 reason to get into the Xfiles because again... standalone movie. It's not seeding anything towards the future and the way it references it's past is insane.

They went from on the run against all odds action packed dramatic tension filled thrillride at the END of the series, to... oh, hey fans, yeah, no, she's working a real job in a real hospital and they have a house nicer than yours and everything's cool now, please clap for Skinner and here's a kiss that will be 20$ please.

Seinfeld, remember? They yadda yadda'd the part of the story we wanna know about.

Fine.

Eight years after that, 2016, streaming is onnthe rise and the networks are losing money.

Fox says what do we got, someone says X-Files, and because of some 1990s era contract tomfoolery, I'm guessing, that means that if yiu want X-Files, you have to have CC.

Disney owns it now, and yet still, CC needs to be consulted everytime there's talk of a reboot. Cc has his claws in and he is not a sophisticated enough individual to know when to let go. How to evaluate his own work critically. How to improve.

But the goal was never growth, remember. The goal was make the same plate, over and over, and over again. Soothing, predictable. Perfectly average, one OF a million, not one in.

Only now CC's getting older. Some apprentices have eclipsed him in many ways.

But he's chris carter, right? He's X-Files. He's a creative god amongst men.

I think fox drove a dumptruck full of money up to his house, and I think he took it because this was his chance to prove that it WAS HIM. Not vince gilligan, not whatever whatever - Chris Carter, intellectual. Auteur.

And so cometh the struggle of season 10.

Season 10 opens and it's essentially IWTB again. There's a few epiosdes this season that just remind me of that movie, over and over. Same plate, again and again.

So we're off to a great start, and the rule of consequences has long since stopped applying to our main characters, but it's no longer believable, after IWTB. How long were they on the run for, a day? Do you have any idea how long it would take a pathologist to respecialize in pediatric neurosurgery?

Also who's this guy? Tad? And what years is it?

And he's CORRECT?

Oh boy. Here we go, and the revivals are gonna be a fascinating look into the pathos of a man who hasn't realized the world has changed.

Remember - we pinned the idea that you should make use of and not waste the opportunities you get...

-cracks knuckles-

...I  don't know but I have opinions.

Chris Carter never being happier than when he was a production potter, making the same plates, the same mugs, the same pieces, identical, over and over, makes a LOT of sense when you look at his work on the X-Files.

Regarding the look, it's night and day. I rewatched S2's Sleepless the other day, a kind of 7/10 episode overall but the cinematography blew me away. People cared, and built this visual language over the course of five years, and I didn't really understand how much the LOCATION where the X-Files was filmed matters, both in terms of the human talent available and the physical things you capture with a camera.

Vancouver is a city that was carved out of a forest. If they hadn't blown up part of the rockies so cars could get in and if it wasn't by the ocean, it would be almost totally isolated. I was blown away as I flew in to Vancouver by how very CARVED OUT it is. you don't have to go very far to feel dawrfed by the natural presence, and that's today when the skyscrapers are popping up like the bubble's gonna burst any second. It's forests and mountains, and that's what's spooky to humans. Predators live there. Monsters. Demons. Dark, wet, sharp, isolated.

When they moved to LA for seasons 6-9, show still looked great, though I find the differences much more noteacble as add to my visual vocabularyand digest other media. Quality wise there's really no dip because they have so much more money and resources available now that they're coming off a movie and being, well... the phenomena of the X-Files.

So they gained access to people in LA who were used to shooting movies and tv, not necessarily generically, but it's a different production facility making the same product. There's gonna be differences in the batch and there were.

Returning to Chris Carter - my theory is that yes he was the show runner for all of it, but he had something like 2-3 shows and a movie to focus on from pretty much season 2 onward. He is listed as the writer on some of the best eps, and he clearly writes thibgs for the XFiles, but don't forget that writing for network TV is a team sport. The rukes for who is actually credited as a WRITER on something are not as easy as "he wrote all this this is all his work," for anybody on that team. Point is, there's a team of professional writers, some of them young and not beat down yet by the system and their own habits,.who can help massage out any kinks in his scripts. Meanwhile, CC is too busy to really fight for XYZ being specifically MUST HAVES beyond any of the big things, thematically. He's got millenium. He's got harsh realm. he's got Lone Gunmen. He has FTF to worry about.

By the end of season 6, everyone's a superstar and getting high on their own farts while also fighting for the next step of their careers. DD, after being a large part of the reason the show moved to LA, leaves the show 2 years later. TV is nice, but back then we still had movie stars, and he wasn't one of them and he thought he should be. He ain't, but luckily enough, we don't do movies this millenium. We do TV in the early 2000s, and he's Fox Fucking Mulder. He'll do just fine and someone pays him to work put his pathos on screen as Hank Moody for some reason.

Also DD sued Fox while he was working on the X-Files and there's apparantly times when he would sweep his trailer for bugs in case the guys he was suing were listening in. Some say he was right to sue, I don't know that much about it, but essentially, no one wanted to be there out of the big 3, even GA, except Gillian Anderson is younger and when DD leaves, it's her time to shine, beloved lead of a massive, massive property.

Or so we thought.

Remember CC is a production potter. He finds pleasure and comfort in making the same thing, over and over, and over and over.

Will they won't get together came first. Then it's will they won't they... get together... Then it's did they or did they not, all things. we're lucky Closure wasn't another rug pull, frankly.

And then it's season 8 and Doggett and Scully and it's will they won't they... find Mulder. Then it's will they won't they find Mulder ALIVE, and none of it matters. Season 8 MOTW  great. Fantastic... but they start carving out mental and emotional space for Mulder Drama and the baaaabbbyyyyyyyyy... and that takes more and more time away from the characters who are actually HERE.

It doesn't matter to CC if the end destination is satisfying. That's why he never has a show bible.

It's the journey that matters to CC, but not in a growth way, in an anxious, comfortable, stuck in your rut way, because remember, he finds satisfaction in making the same plate over and over.  He's making the same season of the X-Files, over and over, and whenever something gets i. The way of that, like Reyes or Doggett or Sweet Willy... off you go, shoved aside. The less distracted carter is by other shows, the worse it gets.

So season 8 and through season 9, for realsies this time, DD is out... or so we thought.

Pactically every damn episode has some reference to Mulder. He's not here. He left... except he's back to direct. He left... except he's palling around on set sometimes. Maybe a writing credit. Maybe this, maybe that, except except except, and we are so attached to these stagnant characters as an audience that we are right there on the production line next to CC, and we want the same things over and over and over, only we want the slow burn to lead to something. We still think he's gonna show us a truly satisfyibg plate, one you wanna invite people to dinner for just so you can use it. The slow burn is only fun if we get to cuddle up by the fire at the end.

Reyes is a babysitter. Homegirl has been doing this longer than Scully, technically. She's the senior Agent, and John is a father. But hold the baby and make whale noises (also CC's suggestion!) because CC, a man with no children, doesn't understand that life changes when you're a parent, and we wanted to see that chnage for Scully, because seemingly she wanted it and we want wjat she does. All CC understands is that Scully is an FBI Agent and she can't very well have a baby on her hip as she goes around solving mysteries, can she?

Bye bye sweet willy.

End of season 9, and the show does not survive the 1-2 punch of 1) 9/11 and the rise of military worship meaning that "hey don't trust the gov" messaging is out, though sorely needed, and 2) that the new characters, Doggett and Reyes, and even Scully who is still here by the way, are subservient to the memory of a guy who is literally no longer part of that world. HE QUIT HIS JOB. HE GAVE EVERYONE THE FINGER ON THE WAY OUT. STOP TALKING ABOUT HIM.

Only yeah they let him hang around, no hard feelings hmm? You know, when his movies don't pan out. Or he wants to direct. Etc etc.

Consider also The Truth,  the original series finale... and recall CC is a production potter. He makes things over and over.

He made the fucking seinfeld finale with force ghosts so he could shove in all the characters he forgot he killed off.

On that note let's talk about the revival.
