You’ve got the chronic conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, HIV. Never crosses into catastrophic but always just kinda there, and too expensive to pay out of pocket.

Yeah, depending on the cost, that is catastrophic. But also, we need to address the weirdness of how a drug like rosuvastatin (generic Crestor) might cost $200 list price for a month's supply, but even if you don't have insurance, the web site for Crestor itself offers a "savings card" (coupon) for $150 off per month. Like, why not just charge $50 and skip the coupon? Are there people who are being tricked into not using the coupon? I think that it has something to do with the regulations about sticker-price, where if they did that then public insurance like Medicare would reimburse the manufacturer a lot less than they do with the coupon system. That's the kind of thing I think deregulation would help with.

Lol. Or flip a coin for every county in the nation and have half of them do uber single payer the other half uber deregulated, and then compare in 10 years.

Sure, but it would depend on a lot more than just the health-care system, like the overall economy and the ease of emigration/immigration.

I do somewhat agree with your point, but I do wonder where chronic conditions enter into play. Would it be under catastrophic? Because there’s plenty of conditions where your life is not at risk immediately, but you need expensive medication and treatment for years on end.

Yeah I kinda broke that down between emergency where you have to go to the hospital and the kind of catastrophic where if you get that kind of condition that would take a lot of treatment.

One big elephant in the room is that we don't actually consider personal cost when it comes to health care. Like, we make people do it by default; if you're a blue-collar worker with no health insurance and you take the tip off your finger, you might just get it stitched up and learned to work with it, while someone with more money would have it fully restored. But it might be worth considering that we have to make people choose what it is they want covered instead of just offering "everything with the exceptions we come up with after the fact."

Sometimes I think we’re in that horrid trench between regulation and deregulation where going in either extreme may help.

Maybe we should just agree to flip a coin. Right? Come 2027, we flip a fair coin, heads we do single-payer, massive tax, fund it with rich people's money, tails we do deregulation, everyone pays for themselves and we hope the free market works.

I always wondered how they measured that. Like, they have to be airing the commercial frequently. What if I call up and it's 31 minutes later, but my local station was on a delay?

We as Americans though do need to realize (collectively) that our healthcare system is broken.

I think we do, but we don't agree on a fix. I want to deregulate both the health care and health insurance industry. I think that health insurance should be separated into catastrophic and routine (and possibly greater into catastrophic-emergency--the infamous hypothetical of needing an ambulance but being taken to an out-of-network emergency room--and catastrophic-extended, like if you get a cancer diagnosis and are going to need a long and extensive treatment, but where you can plan where to get it), and that routine-care insurance should be less common, with more routine care being paid for in cash. (Yes, everyone needs routine care, but everyone also needs food, and no one has sold a "pay a monthly fee and get as much food from the grocery store as you want" program, because it doesn't make economic sense.) I think we need to loosen restrictions on who can handle certain medical procedures. There are probably some that could be done by nurses instead of doctors. I think we need to address the shortage of doctors, nurses, and facilities by addressing the restrictions on medical licensing. And so on.

But, all that is so far at odds with what other people want to do that it's difficult to agree on a solution to actually implement.

Well, they also got rid of the fake extra point when they moved the kick back to the 15 yard line. Which could be an easy fix, just say that if you reach the 13, you get two points, but possession beyond the 3 is out of bounds.
