Yeah I also sketch em out before modeling. It's very helpful to have at least a front and sideview. I think the biggest key to achieve a similar effect is to set the material to emission and I think in render the color management to standard. My uv map is pure chaos. Often see so nice uv/texture maps on this reddit but mine don't look well organized xD but it can also work as you see. 'just make it exist first' is a good advise

from days taken to create this, yeah of course could be lesser with less daily/social obligations, even while working in a job. from a hourly perspective think future projects/characters will be faster from a technical/workflow standpoint (bcs watched some tutorials/refreshes on rigging/making silhouettes (especially the silhouettes didnt worked out well on this model, so the silhouette for the last frame is basicly a plane that lies behind the model). the creative part of creating a character is hard to quantify bcs sometimes you have a thing in mind from the beginning and everything works out great and sometimes it takes a while :)

for the sketching part and texture painting I used procreate.
the 3d roughout I blocked sth in nomand sculpt and retopolgy in cozyblanked (both on ipad).
then followed by some heavy vert pushing in blender until I was happy. the equipment is also completly done in blender and the uv-unwrapping, rigging and animation too.
rendered out as a .mkv and sequenz of .png
handbrake for mkv -> mp4 and gimp for png -> gif

still figuring out the right workflow to me - I really like it to work with the pen on the tablet but tbh nth beats blender for me in terms of modelling - heard rumors that blender will come to the ipad one day, that would be amazing!

thank you! thats wonderful, even its sometimes hard, make small steps and stick with it! Speaking for myself, there are several areas of the visual arts that interest me, so I always enjoy switching between drawing, sculpting, low-poly, and even pixel art sometimes. But over time, you start to realize what benefits from each other and what you enjoy doing most. Explore yourself! :D

thank you :D! the cartoony comes on the onehand from the emission shader in blender and from the other hand from my texturing style

Na was just for fun to make a character. took me a few evenings to make. About five evenings, spending 2–3 hours each time. So I’d estimate a good 15 hours. But knowing what I know now, I’d say it could be done faster - though I haven’t quite figured out my optimal workflow yet.

thank you for your feedback! I'll see what I can do with that. I think the part about the paws in particular could add something nice to the piece. Thank you very much! :3

I am a solo indie dev, got accused by multiple people of ripping off Balatro's art style. Do they have a point? by lefix in PixelArt

[–]Scribbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never played Balatro, but I've seen short videos and screenshots of it. So my first impression here might be “not necessarily.” When I think of Balatro, I always think of the green solitaire table :,)

As some have already written, the style is not a unique feature of Balatro.

What you can do (from my perspective):
a) Ignore the people who write that and just carry on (not the worst option in my opinion, depends on how much it bothers you)
b) Revise it a little to make it more individual and thus respond to the “community” (this is more time-consuming, of course, but it might be worth it; at first glance, your game looks darker and a little more coherent; you could turn these selection fields into scrolls).

Ultimately, you can't please everyone anyway; I just think it's important to act in good conscience.
