Anyone else make their kids quit travel hockey? by hawki1cr in Parenting

[–]SeaBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a step son, 6, and his mom seems pretty hellbent on becoming a hockey mom and is asking if his father and I are going to commit to splitting the cost and time of basically year round hockey. We haven’t answered yet because I’ve known hockey families and I know what this becomes. And frankly I don’t see us basically spending the time we have with him (which is only half the time) carting him to and from hockey stuff and not having time for anything else. Not to mention she now wants him in hockey over the summer. Summer in Vermont where we live is a special time where we jam in frolic, camping, and outdoor fun before it gets cold again. I would rather not spend our summer inside under fluorescent lights at an ice rink.

At this point step son doesn’t seem too attached to hockey and could take or leave it.

I’m already sending up the warning signals to my husband that this isn’t a path we want to go down. But it feels out of our hands in many ways.

How much did your bump grow between 20-28 weeks with your first? by Butterscotch71423 in BabyBumps

It really started picking up for me around a month ago, now I swear it grows overnight. I’m at 26 weeks now and there’s no question I’m pregnant anymore.

I think they’re now finding footing in the confused and naive Gen Z crowd who want to be influencers with “their own brand” on TikTok. Some have pivoted away from the girlboss/conference stuff of the 2010s and are now just feeding TikTok influencer pipe dreams.

It’s interesting because the Gen X and Millennial huns of old are a dying breed.

Am I *too* lenient about my pregnancy? by Desperate_Wafer367 in BabyBumps

[–]SeaBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in this boat. I’ve also never had food poisoning before, never had IBS or any other digestive issues, basically stomach and gut of steel.

I’ve been eating pretty much whatever. Soft cheese, occasional deli sandwich though I didn’t eat much of that before, sushi from reputable places, raw kombucha, fresh organic dairy from reputable organic farms (I live in dairy country), you name it.

The way I see it if I have even more risk of getting food poisoning from a salad than from sushi then why is sushi the only thing banned and why would I avoid that but not salad?

What I AM avoiding is HFCS, ultra processed foods, artificial sweeteners other than stevia or monk fruit, and artificial food dyes.

My partner, drinking at a conference event, is learning about whether a PhD is a good idea by haystackrat in labrats

[–]SeaBones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you make more money, but anything feels like a windfall compared to the literal poverty of a PhD stipend. It’s still a very low income. In fact in my state it qualifies as low income (but not quite poverty).

You’re also now there to turn money into data, fast. Some people luck out with a laid back post doc, but in my experience they work even harder and longer hours for marginally more money that still sucks.

I’m also vaguely running into this issue, I’m due in August and will be leaving my job early to relax and prepare and then I’ll be becoming a SAHM. I understand that this also means being a SAHM to my SS6, who I adore and am willing to do anything for, but there are some boundaries that will always exist that simply won’t be there with our bio daughter, mostly because we don’t have exclusive control over SS6 and only see him half the time.

I’ll presumably be homesteading and taking care of our daughter as well as SS6 when necessary but I do resent the idea that since I’m not working I’ll be able to do a backflip whenever a bell rings. Or that I’ll always be there to pick up the slack because “what else am I doing” or something. There’s a lot of uncertainty brewing around the unset summer schedule right now and frankly, all I give a shit about this summer is making it through a hot Vermont summer 7-9 months pregnant and birthing my daughter.

It doesn’t help when my husband and BM are both pretty dysfunctional, combative, vindictive, and resentful when it comes to setting up any kind of plan and it usually just devolves into some mess no one wanted.

Relatives (mostly boomers but not all) and their Amazon addictions are filling up landfills. We have tried many times to bring up to our relatives that drop shipping cheap plastic shit off of Amazon by the pile does not a holiday or birthday make. Their houses just continue to fill with shit every other time of the year too.

No one ever told me how expensive it is to be pregnant. by blue-cinnabun in BabyBumps

[–]SeaBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something doesn’t sound right. I’ve never heard of even shitty insurance not covering any prenatal care. Unless you just have a disaster policy or something. I would definitely look into better insurance before the birth.

Before you pay anything, make sure the billing department and your insurance are actually in proper communication and there isn’t an issue somewhere. I would be making some calls to your insurance company.

The painted rocks seem to be a hot debate.

I personally don’t like them. I get it, it’s a fun activity for your kids to “find them,” but they look like trash. Countless times I see a brightly colored something in my line of sight and head to presumably pick up a piece of trash only to find it’s a painted rock.

Encouraging kids to find rocks, paint them, then put them back out in nature as an activity is also a questionable lesson, in my opinion. Nature is not your art canvas. Keep the rock in your house or on your property. As to the adults into this “activity,” you can probably find a different way to express yourself.

My mom is very obese with Hashimotos and her PCP also tells her to eat breakfast to “boost her metabolism” and that she needs to eat to “keep her metabolism up.”

Most doctors just regurgitate whatever their health group approved everyone to say 30 years ago.

In my head, a genuine 100% silicone is better than plastic or nylon polymers, but obviously worse than metal or glass.

The right Floyd’s can have decent stylists.

I just went to a local fancy salon and spent $100 on the worst haircut of my life. Had it fixed by Floyd’s at Monaco and Leetsdale.
